I think the reason is because the people in that era are supposed to be conservative and well mannered.. like even touching the opposite sex is considered inappropriate. So when the guys or girls express their feelings or flirt a bit, we take it as a huge deal and maybe because when they want "it" they're not blunt about it but kinda beat behind the bushes or use other terms like "LSP" for example
