Chapter One

Alex fooled with the rim of her glasses while concentrating on the report in front of her. Her hazel eyes skimmed over each line very slowly, trying to find what her boss had found wrong with it. She shook her head, he always did this. She'd give him a report he'd 'read over' it then give it back to her spouting off something like, it won't do.

Alex would take it back read over it about ten times before finally coming to the conclusion that it was perfect. She would in turn give it back to her boss who would praise her. Alex never understood, did the man just not like to read it? Did he enjoy making her feel foolish?

Finally giving up, Alex sat back in her chair her hand going to her head. The headache pounding was starting to wear her down. Sighing she pulled off her glasses to massage her temples hoping that would ease the pain. Opening her eyes, she read the time on the bottom her her computer screen. 7:45 PM, the thought made her cringe. Work started at 7:30 AM, why was she always staying late?

Groaning, she stood putting on her glasses and grabbing the file she'd been reading and a few others. Mr. Jeffrey Collins, her boss was still in his office, he had a late dinner date and would be staying in town. Alex smirked as she walked, he would no doubt been 'having dinner' with his mistress. A co-worker, Alex chuckled softly, how Mr. Collins would think that no one in the office knew about him and his secretary was beyond her.

As she rounded the corner leading towards Mr. Collins office, she stopped. It seemed the light in the above fixture was out. Wonderful. She groaned while walking down the short hallway to Mr. Collins door. His large okay door was half way opened and she was about to push it open when she heard an unknown voice.

"They gave you enough time." It was a man's voice, deep, with a thick accent. Japanese.

"But?" Collins cried out but was silenced by a shot to the head.

"No buts" The man smirked, his head snapped to the side when he heard a gasp.

As if time slowed, Alex's eyes widen as the contents in her hands fell to the floor in front of her. She watched as the man who just shot and killed her boss turned to stare at her. When he began to move towards her, reality set back in.

Alex moved stumbled back until her back hit the adjacent wall. A loud thump rang clear and she jumped pushing herself off the wall and down the darkened hallway. She picked up the pace turning her back to what she'd just seen and ran full out towards her desk, towards the elevators.

The sounds of footsteps behind her caused her to look back, he was easily following her. The gun still in his hand as he kept a cold glare on her.

She focused on seeing the elevators and pushed herself harder. As if a sign from above, Alex caught sight of the fire alarm. She slowed down a little reaching out to pull it when she was caught from behind.

"Argh" she cried out and a pair of arms came around her.

"Sssshhhh"

Alex struggled against her attacker and he laughed, a chilling sound that she would never forget. She began to go over in her mind what she was supposed to do in this situation, she'd taken a self defense class in college. Granted it wouldn't do much good against a...she didn't know what this man was.

Picking her foot up, she slammed a heel of shoe into his leg the sound of him sucking in air told her she'd bought herself some time. Seizing the opportunity, Alex repeated the action again and soon found herself free from his grasp.

She moved forward placing her fingers on the fire alarm then pulled on it. Cringing at the loud sound now filling the hallway, she turned around. Her eyes widened when she found her attack standing in front of her. A sly grin covering his full lips.

Her eyes darted wildly from his face to his hands finding the gun gone and a knife was now in his grip. He looked deadly. He was around 5'10, lean figure not overly built yet still he radiated with power. His hair was dark black, like the color of the night sky. Under his full lips was a piercing. The look emanating from his blue eyes scared the shit out of her.

"Oh fuck!" Escape her lips and she stepped backwards until she was backed up against the wall.

He kept his blue eyes on her as he stepped closer, his gaze ran the length of her from her deadly shoes to her dark rimmed glasses.

"Honkuimushi." He said while taking his last step towards her. "Chokkura honkumiushi."

Tears were already swelling in Alex's eyes, she swore her bottom lip was bleeding for her biting it but still she could not scream out.

"Little Bookworm." The man stated in English, "A small, tiny.." He stepped even closer, his knife going to her cheek. "bookworm." He seemed to be enjoying this, his eyes were sparkling with some emotion beyond that of a cold hearted killer. Alex could tell he was enjoying this.

"Smart." He nodded over to the broken fire alarm, "Most would not have done so."

The knife on her cheek began to slowly move, trailing across her skin not enough to break the skin only enough to scare her. That is what he wanted, he wanted to scare her, to show her who was in control. Her breath hitched when she felt the blade rest of her bottom lip.

Alex stared up at his eyes, he was watching her lip, studying it. Completely, engrossed by it. He snorted before letting the knife move to her chin then down to her throat. She knew she should look away, scream something, but she couldn't. Her body was frozen, she could feel the blade coming rest against her flesh and still she did not cry out.

When the fire alarm went off, both seemed surprised. The man looked up then back at her. Alex began to hear the sound of the elevators. Then it hit her, the firemen must be coming.

"Korikou" He whispered in her ear after leaning close to her.

Alex then cried out as the blade of his knife broke her skin. He quickly pulled back and rushed to the one of the elevators. Her hand went to her neck covering the small incision as she watched him get into the elevator. The metal doors closed just in time for the other elevator doors to open, a couple of firemen along with a security guard and a police officer stepped out.

"I told you there wasn't a fire!" the security guard spouted, "this building has the best..." He trailed off when he eyes focused on Alex. "Ms. Jennings."

That was the last thing she heard before she passed out.

~~*~~

"Ms. Jennings?"

"Ms. Jennings?"

Alex blinked before looking up at the officer standing next to her hospital bed. "Yes."

"I'm sorry to bother you again but we really need to go over this one last time." Officer Marks sighed, "Are you sure he was..."

Alex cut him off, throwing him a glare, "He was Japanese. He spoke Japanese."

"Are you sure, you had a bit of a shock?" Officer Marks asked.

"I lived with a Japanese exchange student in college, I know in what language he was speaking!" She stressed. "How many times are we going to go over this?"

"I'm sorry Ms. Jennings but it's..."

Again Alex cut off the officer, "I saw him kill my boss and then he came after me. And you're sorry? You have no clue do you?"

Officer Ronald Marks was growing annoyed, he understood that she had been through something traumatic yet the situation was completely unbelievable. Her boss had never been out of the country, he'd never been implicated in any sort of scandal in or outside the his office. There was clearly no reason for him to be killed, further more to be killed by a professional.

"You are right." Officer Marks sighed while sitting down in the chair next to her bed. "I have no clue why someone would want your boss dead, would want him dead so much that they would pay someone to kill him."

"And you think I know that answer?" Alex asked, "I don't."

"I need to you to think before you answer this, do you think he'll try to come for you?" Officer Marks asked.

Alex bit her bottom lip as she brought her hand up to where her neck was bandaged. She could still fell his blade cutting into her skin, still hear his voice echoing in her head, his eyes.

"Yes."

Rei Shinji drew in a long drag from his cigarette, he looked up squinted his eyes from the sun. He knew she was on the second floor, his blue eyes watching her window. Looking back down, he pulled out his sunglasses then looked back up. His lips curled up, his bookworm had been on his mind since the night before.

The feel of something nudging at his leg made him look down, his eyes focused on a little girl. She couldn't have been more then five, she smiled up at him and waved. No doubt the little girl was intrigued by his looks. He stood out, wearing a tailored suit, a very expensive tailored suit. Rei knelt down next to the little girl and pulled his sunglasses low on his nose.

"Konnichiha." He chuckled as he watched her try to figure out what he said. "Hello."

She said nothing only smiled, Rei looked around and found no one. The little one must have run off, focusing back on her he asked. "Are you lost little one?"

"No" She stated, "My mommy said she would be right back." The little girl pointed to where her mother had gone.

Rei nodded then put his cigarette out. "Let us sit then and wait for her. Will that be alright?" He asked her while motioning her to go and sit with him. The little girl nodded and followed. Rei crossed his legs and watched as the little girl settled herself next to him. He leaned back against the bench and sighed, this was indeed strange. The little girl stayed silent for a minute or so before she began ramble on about her pet dog. Rei nodded and listened wondering what sort of a mother would leave their child alone in a park, there were nasty sorts out. He was one of them, granted though he'd never killed a child and would never take on that kind of job.

"Dana!!" The sounds of a frantic woman caused both of them to look.

The little girl stood up and was all smiles as her mother came rushing towards them. A policeman was right behind her, the mother ran up and gathered her daughter in her arms eyeing Rei the entire time.

"Baby are you alright?" the breathless mother asked.

"Uh huh" Dana nodded, "we waited here for you."

Dana's mother smiled then thanked the mysterious Asian man.

Rei stood and bowed his head, "It was nothing." He smiled. "goodbye."

"Officer" Rei bowed his head as the officer came up, he smiled one last time at the little girl before walking off.

Chapter 2

Rei's long fingers tapped against the wall he was leaning against. He was watching the shadows that came from the street lamp outside 'his' bookworms' living room window. Waiting was always apart of his game and he did it well but this time it was different. Over and over in his mind, he could see her eyes; see the way they widened as his blade kissed her skin.

It was more then easy for him to infiltrate her apartment, easy for him to study her closer. From what he could see, Alex Jennings was indeed a bookworm. She lived alone, no animals, hardly any pictures , only two of her parents. This bookworm of his was a hard worker and was easily pushed around by those surrounding her. Yet she held an inner strength. Slowly, Rei felt himself becoming entranced.

Killers never felt, captivated, enchanted and bewitched. Those feelings, feelings in general hindered a good assassin. Killers took life without hesitation, they showed no emotion. They leave left no evidence besides the lifeless bodies that lay from their wake. The sound of light footsteps pulled Rei out of his thoughts. He slips slipped into her bedroom as the front door opens up.

~~*~~

Alex thanked the officer that escorted her home and waited until he was gone from her sight to shut her apartment door. She slowly made her way into her darkened apartment groaning when finding the lamp by her couch out. She set her bag down on the coffee table before going into the kitchen. When she found that light not working either, Alex rolled her eyes. Her apartment was notorious for losing power, it happened almost once a week.

Knowing she had candles in her bedroom, Alex made her way there. She easily found a couple of tall vanilla scented candles and brought one into her living room and the other to her kitchen. After lighting both of them , she grabbed her bag from the coffee table and brought it to her bedroom.

It felt like nothing had changed, that the last few days had never happened. The detective had come again to the hospital to tell her that the Japanese assassin still had not been found. As if that was a big surprise to her, she knew they wouldn't. She sighed as she sat on her bed while letting her bag fall to the floor, everything was back to normal at least it looked that way.

Rei watched, his blue eyes narrowing on her form, as she kicked her shoes off and laid back on the bed. He watched her closer her eyes before inhaling and exhaling slowly as if purging her body of all negative thoughts. As her breathing became labored and steady, Rei moved for his resting place and moved towards the bed. His steps though few were silent. When he came to stand beside her, his lips curled upwards, she was still not aware of his presence. Rei slowly began leaning over until his face was over hers, his studied her features as the candle light danced over her face. A feeling began to rise in his belly and he wondered what she would do if his lips met hers. There would be nothing she could do to fend off any action he would take against her. She lay there as if she were a lamb going to the slaughter. He was shocked at the reaction his entire being was having towards this plain, young woman. Rei was about to give in, he heard footsteps coming to her door. He stood and stepped back into the shadows.

Alex jumped a little as the sound of someone knocking rang loud inside her apartment. She quickly got out of bed and then went into the living room. Rei slipped behind her and went into the kitchen as she went to her door.

"Yes?"

"Officer Douglas ma'am, just making sure you are alright?"

"I'm fine thank you." She answered after opening up the door.

" Your lights out?" he asked seeing a candle burning.

"Yes, does that sometimes, no need to worry." She assured him.

"I'll be around this entire evening ma'am if you hear anything just buzz downstairs and they'll notify me." The young officer told her.

"Alright, thank you." Alex told him. He flashed her a smile and then walked off.

"Looks more like a rent a cop." She mumbled before closing and relocking the door.

Alex slowly made her way to the kitchen; she pulled opened her refrigerator door and took out a bottle of water.

"Not warm yet." She smiled while closing the fridge with her free hand.

As she turned to go back to her bedroom, her eyes focused on him. The bottle of water went crashing against to? the floor as Alex took a step back.

He was looking at her, his head cocked to the side. Alex felt her heart beginning to race as he took a step closer to her.

"I've been waiting." He said, "I hope I didn't hurt you too bad." He raised a hand motioning to her neck.

"How?" she asked in a shaky voice.

"I have my ways." Rei answered never taking his eyes off her as he came to tower over her. "It seems you are backed into a corner."

Alex found herself caught between the wall and his body, "The police.."

"Don't understand." He finished her statement, "I know you are upset that I did not come and visit you in the hospital."

"Please.." She whimpered.

"May I?" Rei asked with a twinkle in his eyes. He did not wait for an answer; he went ahead and pulled the bandage away from her neck.

Alex jumped a little as he pulled the bandage off her skin and when he began lowering his face towards hers she turned away.

He smiled at her reaction and continued until his lips were inches away from her wound. "Hmmm," he purred, "it isn't all that bad."

She could feel his hot breath against her skin and cursed her body for reacting to it. When his lips touched the small stitches she could not help but cry out, not in pleasure but in shock. Alex tried to move but Rei placed his arms on either side of her head blocking her escape. She could feel him smiling against her before his tongue began running over the mark his blade had given her.

"That should make it better" he whispered in her ear before pulling back so they were face to face.

Alex was trembling, not knowing what he would do next. Would he kill her? Would he rape her? She only knew she had to get him away from her. As he stared deep into her eyes, Alex ran her hand over her counter knowing she had her cutting knives next to where they were. She pulled one out and slowly brought it to her side.

"You are wondering what I will do to you?" He asked, "Would anyone miss you, my little bookworm?"

"Just finish it." She told him.

"Really?" he chuckled while pulling back letting his hands fall from the wall and to his sides. "What would you like me to finish?"

Without thinking, Alex raised her arm and thus slid the knife she was holding against his neck. She watched the stunned look cover his face as she stepped back; his hand going to his neck.

Rei narrowed his gaze at the knife set firmly in her right hand before locking his gaze with hers. "Payback?"

"I'll fight." She warned, even though she knew she was no match for him.

"I know." He told her before turning and going out of her kitchen.

Alex dropped the knife and ran towards the now opened front door but he was not in the hallway. A piece of paper caught her attention and she knelt down to grab it. Bringing up so she could read it, she frowned, the writing was in Japanese. A clue, she wondered. Nothing knowing why she stepped back into her apartment and locked the door. She went back into her kitchen and placed the knife into the sink before turning on the water washing the blood off the blade. She did not call the cops nor notify the detective on her case. Instead she went and sat on her couch until the power came back on and then called to book a flight to Tokyo.

Chapter 3

The flight to Tokyo was surreal, Alex knew the danger but still she couldn’t help herself. She knew it would be a lifetime before she would understand why she was doing what she was doing. The only thing that made sense, was finding out why he’d left that clue for her. Alex drew in a long slow breath; her stomach began to knot up. She was scared. As she blew out the air coiling up inside, her eyes widened. The crowded street in front of her was like a wave. Stumbling back, Alex straightened up just in time to hear a familiar voice. Her eyes moved from person to person until she found her friend.

“Kim Alex’s voice drenched with relief.

“Alex her friend rushed towards her giving her a warm hug. “I can't believe you are here!

“I know was all Alex could say as she pulled away from Kim’s embrace.

Eyeing her friend closely, Kim nodded, “Why don’t we get you settled and then you can tell me what is going on?

“That would be perfect.

The car ride to Kim’s apartment was silent; Alex had no clue how she was going to tell Kim why she was in Japan. She didn’t want to sound as crazy and she felt. Looking over at her friend, she offered a weak smile hoping Kim wouldn’t ask too many questions before she was ready to speak her peace.

Kim could read the troubled emotions which filled her friend’s eyes; she could tell when Alex first called her a day ago that something big had happened. Alex was never one to up and do something on a whim. She was the type of peron that planed and planed until everything was perfect.
After the two arrived at Kim’s flat, Alex excused herself, wanting to take a long shower before getting something to eat. When Alex emerged, she saw the look of concern in Kim’s eyes.

“I know you are wondering what happened? Alex sighed while seating across from Kim. She placed her hands on Kim’s kitchen table and swallowed hard before continuing. “Something happened.

“I know, what happened to your neck? Kim had eyed the bandage right after first seeing Alex but didn’t bring it up.

“I witnessed a murder, my boss’ murder. Alex dryly answered, she watched as Kim’s features softened and her eyes filled with worry.

“What, oh my…are you alright? Kim was on her feet and at Alex’s side, wrapping her arms around her pulling her into a hug. “Why didn't you tell me?

“Kim…Kimura Alex pulled away with a smile, “I’m alright, I just…he came after me.

Kim leaned back on her knees glaring up at her friend, “He what…what about the police, did they find him…?

“No, he’s gone.

“He’s gone? Kim frowned, “But why, I mean, why are you here?

“He’s here. Alex told her before standing and going over to her small carryon bag.

Kim rose slowly and followed, she stood behind and watched as Alex pulled out what looked like a piece of paper. She stepped back a little when Alex turned and handed her the paper.

“What is this?

“I need you to translate this. Alex said while sitting on the couch.

Kim slowly unfolded the paper and looked over the writing; she joined Alex on the couch before she began to read it. “This is an invitation, to a masquerade ball at…

“Where? Alex urged.

“Where did you get this? Kim asked.

“He left it for me, broke into my apartment and left this for me. She left out the part where he'd trapped her in her kitchen.

“He did, this ball is for one of the oldest and riches family in Japan, no one can just pick these up off the street. They are hand delivered, each invitation is hand written with a different color ink and each has a watermark on the paper. Alex this is, these people are said to be above the law. Kim couldn’t hide the uneasiness in her voice.

“I don’t understand any of this Kim, I just….

Kim interrupted her, “This estate, Aoi Sora, it means blue sea. The family is very famous all over Asia. They own homes and countless companies all over the world. There aren’t many pictures and information known about them because it is said that the government will not allow their secrets to be made public. I know this much because I read an article about them a few years ago. One of the family members won an election and they did a piece on him.

“Blue sea? Alex sighed, but somehow knew why the estate was named that.

“It’s said that every generation one of the heirs' has blue eyes. That is pretty much all the information we as the public knows. Kim explained. “I don’t know what else to say.

“I came because I knew you would help, please help me? Alex pleaded. She wasn’t leaving without solving this puzzle.

“This is dangerous Alexandra, you understand that?

Alex nodded, “I have to finish this. I have to know why my boss was killed and why he left this for me. She knew he’d left the invitation for her, but did he know she would follow him?

“I will help you, I know this is crazy but I will help.

“Thank you Alex smiled, “now when is this ball?

“Two weeks, we need to get you a dress; you’ll need to understand some Japanese. Kim sighed.

As the two women continued their conversation, a figure stood across the street looking up at the third floor apartment window. He smiled before pulling a cigarette to his lips. Inhaling softly, Rei quickly let the air escape.

“I knew you would come he purred as he pulled out his cell phone. “My guest is in Tokyo; I hope everything is prepared for her arrival on Saturday?

Rei nodded as the person on the other end of the phone spoke, “I have your promise that my plan will play out as scheduled?

His lips curled upwards before ending the call. Once the phone was inside his jacket pocket again his eyes focused on the apartment window across the street. A knot coiled up inside his stomach, he wasn’t scared but bit nervous. He’d been thinking about his bookworm since their first meeting and now she was here. She would soon be in his home and nothing would be his way.

“My lovely bookworm, I’ll see you soon.

&&&&&&&&

Alex’s sleep was plagued by dreams, dreams of him. She finally sat up, kicking the covers off before swinging her legs over the side of the bed. Her body was tired yet she feared what would happen once her eyes were closed again. His breath on her neck, the feel of his lips touching her skins…..shaking her head, Alex stood and moved towards the small window. She pushed back the curtain and then opened the window. Her eyes looking out over the darkened city, as her eyes moved from one building to the next she found herself relaxing.

Her shoulder shrugged as she blew out a long deep breath, “What am I getting myself into?

She didn’t answer herself, she knew, somehow deep down inside she knew this was a dark road she must follow. Her eyes moved downward, looking over the busy street beneath her. From one person to another, her eyes lingered over the crowds of people until she saw someone. She could see the outline of a man leaning against a light pole. He was across the street but even from the third floor apartment, she couldn’t see him as clear as he could see her. The light from the pole he stood under acting like a spot light, she growled before moving back. An uneasy feeling washed over her, and she waited a few seconds before going back, her eyes focusing on the light pole and he was gone.

Rei chuckled softly as he watched her come to the window again, “Silly bookworm, tricks are for kids.

His blue eyes danced with amusement, he was toying with her. She knew it was him, how could she not. There was an understanding between them now, and from this point onward, the hunt was on. Their dance had begun the night he’d murdered her boss and now there was nothing that would keep him away from her.
