Prologue-ish

“Nadech. Come on, nong Da, say Nadech. Na-Dech.”

She stared back at him.

“Aow, p’chai’s name isn’t that hard to say. Come on, Na-Dech,” Nadech emphasized the syllables for his sister, who was nearly three, but had yet to ever say his name. Instead, she toddled around calling him “Big brother, big brother…” as he was five years older than her.

Her eyes widened innocently at him and sparkled, making his heart ping at her cuteness. “Aw…” he pinched her cheeks, adoring his little sister too much to be mad.

Upstairs, voices rose and their mom’s hysterical sobs rang down. Quickly, Nadech covered Da’s ears. “Uh oh, it’s happening again. Come on. Let’s go.” But before he could escape with Da, their mom descended the stairs with a suitcase in her hands.

“Mama?” Nadech could barely speak louder than a whisper.

Pausing to dry her eyes, his mom took a deep breath and kneeled in front of Nadech, smiling. “My dear.” Her lips trembled. “I love you.”

“Of course.” He patted her beautiful white face, stained with tears.

“Can you promise me?”

“What?”

“Promise you’ll be brave. Promise that you’ll live and grow up happy, and that you’ll never forget Da.”

“I could never forget her or you. I promise forever,” he replied seriously, and with both hands on her face, he kissed her forehead. “Mama, don’t cry.”

She smiled faintly with pride for her little man, with sadness for what she was about to put him through. “Now kiss your little sister too.”

That was easily accomplished.

“Da and I have to go now.”

He immediately pouted. “But it’s not bed time yet.”

“Nadech, we have to leave you for a while.”

“And go where?”

“Far away.”

“I’ll go too,” he declared, “Nong Da needs me to protect from monsters.”

“No, you can’t come with us,” her voice grew strained. “Be a good boy here. Promise?”

Nadech suddenly became aware of the silent truth. He was staying here. Alone. All at once, his mom stood up, yet he was being held back by someone. “Mama! Where are you going?”

She turned away.

“Go now,” commanded the calm voice of Norachai Phraisong from the top of the stairs. “Don’t return. Do what you will with the other, but make sure you never appear in front of Nadech.”

“Let me go!” Nadech reached desperately for his mom and sister. “No! Don’t leave me!”

“I’m sorry.”

Da was crying as the door closed and Nadech still couldn’t break free from the person holding him back.
-------------

[precisely 3 months later]

Nadech ran as fast as he could. He didn’t bother looking back, just trying not to slip on the wet pavement. Breathless, he finally collapsed behind the slide of an abandoned playground. “Uh…” he grimaced at the bloody scrapes on his hand after his attempt to ‘fly’ off the front gates of the Phraisong Residence. Even the unusually frosty wind didn’t numb the stinging on his hands. He heard gravel and rocks crunching nearby, so he tensed his body in preparation. Like all the other times he had run away from home, he wasn’t being brought back without a fight. His fists grabbed chunks of mud. Nadech leapt up and fired the mudballs at the person, then got in a steady stance to fight.

“Your aim’s pretty bad, you know.”

It was just a kid, a boy the same size as him with loosely wavy hair and lanky limbs.

“Who are you?” were the first words out of Nadech’s mouth.

“The owner of this place.”

“You own the playground?” he asked skeptically, taking in the worn, outdated clothes and patched hat on the boy.

“Well, I live in the tunnel, so it’s like I own it too.”

“Why do you live in the tunnel?”

The boy just looked at him, like he had so much more to learn about the cruel world. “You cold?”

Nadech shivered.

“Come on.”

Nadech had no choice but to follow. He seemed harmless enough. They climbed the red ladders to the mini tower that led into the tunnel.

“P’Oh?”

“It’s just me, Kim. I found someone.”

A pair of light brown eyes appeared and Nadech found a small girl crawling out. She had a rough cotton blanket that swallowed her tiny figure in it. “Who’s he?”

“My name is Nadech.”

“I’m Mario, and my little sister is Kim.”

“P’Oh,” she gasped. “His hand has blood!” She reached for his hand, but Nadech flinched away. He didn’t know why but he didn’t want attention brought to his weakness.

“I’m fine,” he stated flatly.

Mario grunted and tossed an old scarf at him. “That’s all we have. Hey,” he folded his arms, “You can take my side of the tunnel tonight. Kim, go back in, it’s getting cold.”

She obeyed after a last curious glance at Nadech.

“What, you’re letting me stay here?”

“Looks like you’re on the run. After that failed mudball attack, you need all the help you can get. I won’t ask questions, just don’t make trouble for us. Now go in.”

Nadech threw a glare, resentful that this boy who was his same age was ordering him around. But being exhausted and soaked and finally really free for once, Nadech didn’t mind Mario’s bossiness. That night, Nadech slept deeply, even with the cool air. Perhaps because it matched the iciness within his heart.

Gosh, how can his mom just take his sister and leave? That's just wrong. Especially when he loves her so much. Did she get herself in some sort of trouble or something?

Chapter 1 Surprise

Nadech threw a glare, resentful that this boy who was his same age was ordering him around. But being exhausted and soaked and finally really free for once, Nadech didn’t mind Mario’s bossiness. That night, Nadech slept deeply, even with the cool air. Perhaps because it matched the iciness within his heart.

Nadech drew in a sharp breath and was awake. No wonder he’d been so cold throughout the night. His blanket was trailing off the foot of the bed. Sighing, he snatched the blanket back over himself, making a note in his half-conscious mind to lower the air conditioning a notch. Just as he was comfortably covered, his alarm clock went off. His hand whipped out and broke the alarm, silencing the beeping. Peace.

“Good morning sunshine!” Sunlight exploded into the room. “Dude, get up!”

Nadech growled.

“Yeah, yeah, you’re tired, you only got four hours of sleep, you’re probably working past midnight again, but,” Mario, more commonly known as Oh, jumped on the bed next to Nadech, “it’s your own fault so I feel no sympathy. Now don’t make your cup of coffee wait, kay?” he laughed, rolling away from the pillow that Nadech chucked at him. “Yo, get up. Did you forget what day today is?”

“$*^!!?&*”

“It’s your birthday! Whoo! Come on, I got something for you.”

Reluctantly, Nadech opened his eyes to a wrapped box next to his pillow. Sighing, he pushed himself up and sat. After opening the box, he sent Oh a flat stare, holding up his brand new…alarm clock. “Gee, thanks.”

“I thought you might find it useful,” Oh said proudly.

“If it’s my birthday, shouldn’t I be sleeping in?”

“Nobody’s stopping you, but I’ve never seen you sleep in before, no matter how many alarm clocks you go through. Poor little mechanical suckers…Although, it would be nice to have a day off too…” he mentioned intentionally.

“Don’t count on it.” Nadech set the clock on the nightstand and ambled into the bathroom.

-------------

“Happy birthday, P’Nadech!” Kim whisked a tray of eggs, toast and muffins on the table and poured coffee into his cup. “You have to eat up everything today, okay?”

Nadech asked, “Don’t you have class?”

“It’s Saturday.” She shook her head. “You’re so buried in work you’ve lost track of time.”

He sipped the coffee. “Mm, why hasn’t Nok brought the car around yet?”

“You’re going somewhere?”

“To work of course. Tch,” he smiled. Kim was one of the rare recipients of Nadech’s even rarer smiles. “You thought I had a poor memory.”

He usually worked on Saturdays, she knew that, but Kim frowned. “Didn’t P’Oh tell you? Uncle Norachai said you’re staying home today. The party—“

“What party?” he interrupted sharply.

“Your birthday party.”

Scoffing, Nadech pushed back from the table and marched off to his father’s study office.

“I’m not having a party.” He got straight to the point.

“Everything has already been planned. It starts at six tonight and you will be there, greeting every guest. Is that understood?”

“What I don’t understand is why I have no say in this.”

“It’s your birthday. Just sit and relax. You’ve been exhausting yourself lately.”

“Save yourself the trouble. I don’t need a celebration because today is no more special than any other day.”

Khun Norachai sighed as the door slammed. He wasn’t giving up though. Tonight was just the beginning of what he had in store for his son.

“It won’t be that bad. What wouldn’t you enjoy about your own birthday party?” Kim asked with her chin resting on her hands.

“One, I didn’t ask for it. Two, there’ll be a bunch of people I barely know or care to be in the company of. Three, I’m not getting any work done.”

“Boohoo Mr. Workaholic,” she teased. “I think you should have some time off.”

“Pretending to be interested in stuffy snobs all night doesn’t count as time off,” he grumbled. “At least you and Oh will be there…” He glared at nothing in particular. “I’ll save skinning him alive for tomorrow. He was probably a part of this idea.”

“Skinning p’Oh alive would make me very sad,” Kim pointed out. “And something else I should tell you, I’m not going to be able to make it for the party. My research lab partners are meeting tonight. Our deadline is coming up.”

Nadech groaned, making her laugh.

“Only one person for you to escape to tonight. You really are growing up. Well,” she glanced at her watch. “I have to go now. See you later. Oh, and please don’t really skin p’chai alive.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Stop being a baby,” Oh said, taking a seat next to Nadech on the couch. “What’s the matter with one more night of people kissing up to you?”

“My father’s up to something,” Nadech glowered darkly.

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. But I doubt this is the last surprise of the day.”

-------------

Nadech restrained from rolling his eyes as the conversation headed into the subject of the Theppikorn’s daughter, who stood giggling to the side—as were the rest of the bachelorettes spread throughout the room, their eyes on Nadech, batting their lashes and hoping to catch his eye.

“Well, congratulations to your daughter for graduating,” Nadech complimented and politely said, “Please excuse me for a moment, my friend is waving to me.”

Nadech parted the crowd towards Oh. “”If you make me wait longer than five minutes again, I’m going to have to break my promise to Kim,” he threatened quietly, “Which did include not skinning you alive.” The plan was that Nadech was to greet all guest parties but if they tried to start a conversation, it was Oh’s job to pull him out.

“Sorry, I got side-tracked.” Oh’s eyes followed a slim little black dress with swaying hips.

“Khun Nattaporn. Her father owns a five star restaurant chain. She models for LC agency,” Boy Pakorn, another friend of theirs, recited.

Oh smirked in delight as the subject of his study swaggered past with a shy smile. Apparently not all eyes were on Nadech after all. “I think I’ll go introduce myself.”

“Wait for me, maybe she has a friend here too!” Boy followed.

“What about me?” Nadech cursed at his traitorous so-called friends. He could see the hungry bachelorettes getting in pounce mode, so he headed in the direction of his father, where the area was most crowded, then slipped out the door unnoticed.

-------------

“If you get caught, it had nothing to do with me, got it?!”

Yaya scoffed, remembering Margie’s words. “As if I’m stupid enough to get caught when my ass is on the line if I stay here!” She straightened out her male clothing and adjusted her cap, then strapped her bag over her shoulder. It contained her party gown.

It was really her parents’ own fault, forcing her to come to some stranger’s birthday party. She was very much aware of the possibilities that might come up. They were a determined pair, considering the previous five failures—or more accurately, disasters of their match-making. And it wasn’t just any hi-so guy this time, but Nadech Phraisong, who was definitely in the list of top five richest bachelors in the country. She wasn’t about to give her parents any hopes with this guy especially since, right now, Yaya had already found someone, and she had become so efficient at evading these pointless parties that she’d planned on meeting her special person tonight.

Yaya swore at the sight of the night guard prowling the gates. Her eyes caught the marble pillars molded into the gates. They were just calling to her to be climbed, inviting her to make her escape with a little fun.

“Let go of me!”

Nadech’s head swung up in the direction of the commotion. He left his spot on the bench.

“What is going on?”

The guard bowed and roughly pulled someone forward. “Sir, I caught this boy trying to climb over the gate.”

Nadech raised a brow, taking in the skinny framed boy, who kept his head down. “Who are you?”

“I told you,” the surly voice responded, “I work for one of the guests. I was just following an errand.”

“And you thought the best way was to climb the gate?” Nadech asked with all seriousness, watching the boy open his mouth to retort but finding no excuse, bit his lip in a huff. Nadech tilted his head for a closer look.

“Shall I call the police sir?”

“What!?” Yaya shouted in alarm. She coughed and deepened her voice. “I’m not a criminal. I didn’t steal or cause any trouble!”

Nadech’s ears perked up at a rustling sound. “Nok, go back and if anyone asks where I am, tell them you didn’t see me. I’ll take over from here.”

“Yes sir. You’re not going to turn this one in?”

“We’ll see how it goes.”

Yaya wasn’t usually intimidated by anyone but the cold voice of the man in front of her made her gulp. The guard made no effort to avoid bumping into her on his way. “That jerk…”

“Did you get what you came here for?”

“What? Hey, didn’t I say I didn’t steal anything?” She was getting pissed off and cursed him under her breath.

Nadech’s face stayed blank and he said, “Do you talk to your elders that way?”

She sighed. “You’re not my elder. I don’t know you.”

“All the more reason to be polite, if the fact that you were caught on my property doesn’t make a difference to you.”

So he was the owner of this place. “Wouldn’t have gotten caught if I hadn’t held onto that plant. Tch. What kind of cynical villain would plant thorns on their gate…” she mumbled resentfully.

Yaya finally looked up at him full in the face. Once she got over the initial shock of how godly handsome he was, her face turned into a scowl. She snatched her hand away.

Standing straight, Nadech said, “I’ll give you one chance. Let me see your bag.”

Grimacing, Yaya refused, “No! I didn’t steal anything!” Shiet, her id and everything was in there. Even if he believed she was a boy, he would think she stole someone’s wallet and clothing. Actually, the clothing would take a lot more explaining than the wallet, seeing as she was a boy at the moment.

“That’s not the behavior of an innocent person. Hand over the bag.”

“No!” She tried to run. Yaya didn’t make it two steps when he had reached out and held onto the bag. “Let go!” She tugged hard.

He jerked the bag out of her grasp making her stumble backwards. “Augh!” Her voice lost all trace of false roughness.

Nadech’s eyes widened as long silk hair was freed from the cap.

Lying in a heap on the ground, Yaya swore. What now? She scrambled to her feet, except—

“Whoa!”

The fool had probably twisted her ankle, Nadech thought.

“Get away from me! I don’t need your help!” she struggled in his arms while balancing on one leg.

“If you keep lying, I’ll be forced to do something neither of us will like.”

“Hey!”

He swept Yaya off of her one-legged stance so she was perfectly fitted in his arms. How humiliating! Yaya glared up at the monster.

“Trust me, I don’t do this out of concern for you.”

“Ah, there you are! I knew Nok was lying. Nadech, there’s someone you should—eh?” Oh was at a loss for words, eyeing the scene in front of him with awe. He shook his head once, then grinned. “And who might this be?”

“This?” Nadech swiveled his gaze to Yaya like he had no idea why it was so unusual to be carrying a stranger. “This is my present.”

“What!? You disgusting jerk!”

Oh snorted. Did she really just call THE Nadech Phraisong ‘disgusting’?

As they made their way back to the house, Oh asked, “So how were you lucky enough to be delivered such a…an interesting gift?”

Nadech shrugged, ignoring the pitiful creature who continued to protest with passionate frustration.

“If you don’t put me down this instant,” Yaya muttered darkly, “I’ll…”

“Empty threats don’t scare me,” Nadech conversed casually.

“Miss, I think it’d be best if you didn’t get on the wrong side of this guy. I say this out of concern for you, but you’re at a big disadvantage right now,” Oh advised.

Yaya made a pained face, annoyed. She couldn’t even use her parents as her usual threat because they would not be on her side if they found out what she’d tried to do.

“May I ask what your name is?” Oh offered a warm smile.

“Save the pleasantries for later. Someone’s coming.”

“Did you find him?”

“Yeah, but he has an emergency to take care of,” that was the other guy, Yaya could hear him.

“Really? Does he need our help?”

“You know,” Oh rubbed his chin in serious consideration. “I think he actually found something he might have difficulty overcoming. That’s why I think he should handle it himself. Come on, a certain lady is waiting for me.” He hung an arm over Boy’s shoulder and they walked into the room.

Nadech glared to the side. He could tell Oh was making fun of him. But now that he actually thought about it, he couldn’t figure out why he had this woman, who climbed gates and cross-dressed, with him. She was obviously hiding something and his curiosity was piqued. Besides, now he had an excuse to not be present at the party.

“How long are you going to stand here?” she demanded. Yaya was irritated by the silence that insisted on her defeat. For once, should she have tried to bear it out for her parents? Was this the night her no-fail streak ended?

Nadech almost smiled at her complaint, like a child on time out. “If you’re bored, you can start at the beginning. What were your intentions?” He climbed the stairs steadily.

She blurted out, “To depart without my—anyone noticing.”

They stopped at a door, which he pushed open with a foot. Yaya glanced over the room warily. Nadech placed her at the foot of the bed.

“So, you are a guest?”

“Yes.”

“Just so you know it would not have bothered me at all if you had left openly, or indeed if you had simply not come. In fact,” he sat in a recliner next to the window and crossed his long legs, “having all these people here is precisely what bothers me.”

Yaya raised a brow, then blinked. “So…so this is a party for you?”

“Correct,” his smile reached his eyes, but with dark humor. “Some birthday.”

How could she have missed the obvious? After all, he had told her he was the owner of the place. The Phraisong family had only one heir. Nadech Phraisong. Yaya couldn’t believe her luck. All she wanted was a quiet evening away from her parents’ social expectations, yet now, here she was with the one person that was the cause of all her problems!

Chapter 2 From the Sky

Nadech watched her face transform from shock to fury to loathing, and a smile nearly twitched on his lips, but he checked himself. This woman had tried to climb her way out of here. He couldn’t blame her for that. He hated these socials and wouldn’t have blinked if all the guests below paraded out the door, but now, he actually wanted her to stay. Just so he could watch what surprising actions she’d take next.

Yaya could not believe she had missed her date with Yuke for this. Yaya leapt to her feet and headed for the door.

“I see you’re better now.”

She stopped and spun around. “I told you I’m fine but you still wasted time bringing me up here. Goodbye.”

“If you leave now, I’ll have the whole house alerted about a burglar.”

“I’m a guest!”

“Take a look in the mirror,” he gestured to her black clothing.

Yaya was beside herself with rage that her whole escape plan was backfiring on her, right down to her clothing even.

Nadech suddenly had an idea. He needed someone to help keep the bachelorettes at bay, which he usually relied on Kim’s presence for but since she was gone tonight…

“Hey, what are you doing!” she asked as he went and opened her bag, pulling out her dress. He glanced over it, and judging it to be not too wrinkly, held it out to her.

“Change into this and come down with me.”

“What?! You’re crazy!”

“Your plan failed and you got caught. Now you’re at my mercy, so follow my orders.”

Crossing her arms, Yaya frowned back stubbornly. “I won’t.”

In the blink of an eye, Nadech had her tossed over his shoulder and headed for the bathroom.

“Put me down!” she screamed and kicked. He slid her back on her feet none too gently and thrust the dress at her.

“Change,” he ordered in a clear cut tone, “or I’ll do it for you.”

When she simply stared in shock, he reached for her jacket zipper.

“Ok! Ok! I’ll do it, don’t touch me!” she pushed him out and slammed the door. “What a barbarian!”

This time, Nadech couldn’t hold back his smile. While he waited, he picked up her wallet and read her id. “Urassaya Naratwarin.”

After a few minutes, the bathroom opened and he turned. Honestly, he shouldn’t have been surprised because even before, he could tell she was pretty. But now, with the front of her hair braided out of her face her delicate and feminine features were revealed. The shimmering one-shoulder dress hugged her body then flowed in loose pleats at her hips, and those eyes, large and defiant, drew him in.

When his eyes locked with hers, Yaya felt a tingle run up her spine. Mentally shaking herself out of it, she reminded herself that that same handsome gaze had been cold and dark. She held her chin up smugly, knowing well that she looked nice. She took her time putting on the earrings and shoes that she had thrown in the bag earlier.

“Are you ready?”

“Yes, your majesty,” she rolled her eyes up at the ceiling.

“Let’s go, princess.”

She grudgingly took his proffered arm, her stomach twisting at the thought of what her parents would look like when they saw her walking arm in arm with the very man they were planning on setting her up with.

They reached the entrance hall and again, Nadech felt tickled by how she looked like she was in pain just being here—though of course his bossiness might be a large part of it. He whispered, “Can you relax a little? You’re scowling like the room is full of vicious carnivores.”

Yaya was preparing to be on the lookout for her parents, but offered a sarcastic smile. “If you think that’s bad, wait until my stomach is strong enough to look at you.”

In response, he tightened his hold on her hand that was on his arm, which in turn made her give a sharp look at him.

Oh met them at the door. “Dude, there you are.”

“Oh, meet Urassaya Naratwarin. This is Mario, a friend of mine.”

“Oh my, is this the same lady who dropped from the sky into your arms?”

Despite his teasing, Yaya took a liking to Mario right away. His smile was easy and sincere, and a sparkle in his eye lit up the atmosphere. Unlike the grim and stern man who was holding her hand. “The name is Yaya” she said, “Nice to meet you, Mario.”

“Please, call me Oh. You look beautiful. Nadech is lucky to be escorting you tonight.” He chuckled as she made a face that said she’d received the bad end of the bargain, then turned to Nadech. “I know you don’t want to go back in there, but there’s someone you’ll be glad to see.”

Nadech raised a skeptical brow. “Who?”

“Just come on.” Oh nudged him and led the couple inside. “Yo, Mark.”

“I see you held a party to welcome me back.” A tall suited man raised his glass as they approached.

“You and I both wish this was your party instead of mine.” Nadech grinned inspite of himself and clasped hands with Mark.

Mark was the branch manager who worked for him, a most reliable colleague once Nadech started working for his dad’s resort business. Mark was also his best friend after Oh.

“Well, I would think that’s the least you can do for me,” Mark said, dusting his spotless jacket, “I mean, after I sealed that partnership over in Ko Samui.”

Nadech and Oh exchanged exasperated looks. “We heard,” Oh said, giving him a punch on the arm, though obviously Mark was already full of enough pride without others praising him.

Mark sighed. “All my hard work and I don’t even get a break.”

“Tell me about it,” Oh pretended to pout and folded his arms.

“OK, shut up,” Nadech said. “We’ll talk after this thing’s over.”

Mark looked at the woman by Nadech’s side. “Eh, that doesn’t look like nong Kim. Who…”

“Mark!” Yaya turned back to the group in surprise. “Nice to see you here!”

“Yaya.” He smiled with familiarity. “Wow, you look nice tonight.”

“Hm, thanks,” she replied to his good-natured laugh.

Oh asked, “You know her?”

“Yes. Well, her parents are the Naratwarins.”

“Ah!” Oh nodded. “They are in charge of the best construction and architecture designs. We’ve worked with them a number of times.”

“She and I became acquainted a while back. But Yaya, I’m surprised that you haven’t managed to, er, slip out of here yet.”

Mark met Yaya at one of her parent’s parties, where she was trying to sneak out. He aided her and since then, they’d become familiar with each other. Yaya was a nice person, but she could never trust her parents not to set her up with any of their business partners, and hi-so gatherings bored her to death so she made a point of avoiding them. Mark, however, was one of the few people she tolerated enough to become friends with.

“I would have if it wasn’t for…” she trailed off, looking away from Nadech grumpily.

If Mark was surprised by seeing her last this long at a formal party, it was nothing compared to his astonishment that Nadech was allowing a woman other than Kim to be so close to him.

Nadech had been looking around, seeing that his plan had worked. Having Yaya with him, none of the other women dared to approach him in case they should lose face finding out she was his girlfriend. He turned and caught Mark scrutinizing him. Narrowing his eyes at Mark, Nadech dropped the hand that was over Yaya’s. Although Mark looked away, it was with a rather suspicious glint in his eye. Nadech sighed, hoping he wouldn’t face bothersome questions.

“I was thinking of scouting the other company partners for their updates this week. You in?” Oh asked.

“Nah, I’m only here for a night.”

“What, just one night?”

Mark’s lips then slid up in a sly smile. “I got places to go.”

“Hold up, I know that smile.” Oh leaned in. “The devil in your eyes is coming out. You got a special lady somewhere.”

“Special is correct.” Mark suddenly softened, yet the thought of this ‘special’ lady seemed to light up his face and all he did was smirk silently, which caused Nadech and Oh to glance at each other.

“Okay, that doesn’t look like the usual devil,” Oh squinted an eye at Mark, who would usually be inspecting the ladies of the room.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Oh please. Just tell us who—“

“May I have your attention please?”

The room immediately became muted, awaiting the words of Khun Norachai. “As you all are aware, today is my son’s birthday. I have yet to give him my gift, and now, the time has come.” He cleared his throat and sought out his son’s hard eyes. Nadech looked back with indifference. “I have a special announcement. For my son’s birthday, I have decided to pass the Phraisong Estate in Khorat into his name immediately. Thus, he will be changing his place of residence soon. I feel it is the least I can do as a father to allow my son some freedom as a bachelor in the prime of his life.” Some of the elder guests chuckled.

Mark and Oh turned to look at Nadech. Nadech, although also caught off guard, didn’t look surprised but shock was running throughout his mind, especially as his father continued.

“As for this house, fortunately, I have already made a deal with Khun Arich and his wife Khun Champa, who have generously agreed to buy it from me.” He used his hand to point out the couple. “We have much more to discuss,” he paused with a mysterious glance at the elder couple, “but now, please enjoy the rest of the evening. Thank you for wishing my son well on his blessed day.”

“Mom? Dad?” Yaya had heard no news that they were even looking for a house. She looked up and was taken aback by Nadech’s grey eyes and clenched jaw. “What’s going on?”

The heat had crept up Nadech’s neck and face and his clenched fists added more tension to his body. If he spoke first, he knew he’d explode.

“Son,” his father calmly began. “I know you’re surprised about the announcement but I felt it was time for a change.”

“What’s wrong with our house?” he demanded, with control in his voice.

“Nothing, of course. I wouldn’t sell it to others if there was something wrong with it.”

“Is there a reason you’re kicking me out?”

“I’m not kicking you out. You’ll be taking over the family estate. I feel that you are a grown man and as your father, I want to provide you with a place of your own.”

The Phraisong Estate included a sizable piece of land and a manor, which had been passed down for generations in the aristocratic family. It was in the same area where the family’s first business opened.

“Then why…why am I moving when this house has been in our family for so long? Our estate doesn’t need me any time soon.” Nadech shook his head. “I don’t have to go anywhere. I’ll stay here by myself.” He calmed at logic. “If you didn’t think about letting me inherit this house, I will buy it from you.” Was he not an adult as his father said?

“I thought you would suggest that, but it’s not going to happen.”

“Why?!” Nadech got up. “It wasn’t enough that you made them leave me! Now you’re going to take away the one memory that I have of them? If you want to move away and forget them, go ahead. I’m staying.”

His father knew it was the connection with Nadech’s mother and sister that would make him fight to keep the house. “It’s too late. I’ve decided it’s time you take responsibility for the family estate. This house will be removed from your inheritance, and will soon legally be possessed by Khun Arich. I believe that he wants to give it to his daughter.”

“Over my dead body.” The mention of the woman from last night made Nadech even bitterer. His house, the home that he had lived with a mother and sister, was not falling into the hands of some high-so brat.

“I have another offer for you then, if you insist that you want to keep the house. If the idea of a solitary bachelor life does not appeal, then I suggest it is time you settled down.”

Nadech eyed his father warily.

“Marry Khun Arich’s daughter.”

It was as if his father had just spoken in a different language. Was this another one of his surprises? “Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

Nadech drew a deep breath. “Where did this idea come from?” He didn’t quite comprehend how in the world they had gone from talking about the house to talking about marrying. “Is this what they asked for?”

“No. I brought up the idea, and it really is your only second option because the Naratwarin family wants their daughter in a comfortable and modern home, like this one that we’ve renovated. The only way that both she and you can have this house is…by marrying each other. And then I shall leave the house in my will.”

Nadech was at a loss for words. “You don’t care about me at all do you? You know how much this place means to me, and the only way you’ll let me have it is to…to have me marry someone I don’t even know.” He strode to the door.

“If this is your final decision, I will have everything prepared for your relocation. Of course, Oh and Kim will be welcome to join you. I will let them know and they will agree to my decision,” his father said.

Nadech stopped at the door. “Only because they love and feel obligated towards you after all you’ve done for them.”

The door closed and Khun Norachai’s head bowed with a sigh. “No, it is the two of them, who have done so much for me by coming into your life, Nadech.”

After Nadech’s mom and sister left, Nadech’s world had stopped turning. He never wanted to be around anyone, he didn’t eat or sleep, he didn’t talk, laugh, or cry. Then one night, about two months later, when Khun Norachai had held a dinner meeting with his closest business partners and their families, Nadech suddenly changed. He grew defiant and rogue-ish, running away from home often. But at least he was alive again. Then after another runaway, a servant finally found Nadech, and he refused to come home without Mario and Kim. Khun Norachai accepted the two children willingly and raised them with affection, affection that Nadech rejected, but which the two had yearned for all their lives. And of course, with their help, Nadech grew to accept that staying home, growing, learning, and working was the most reasonable choice for him.

Nadech reached the haven of his room and braced his hands against the window, unaware of the outside world.

The only real reason he was living with his father was because they were family. It was because of a grudging obligation towards his father for giving him an education, so he accepted his title as the heir, graduating and working at the company and upholding their public title dutifully.

But Nadech had a second duty. He meant to keep his promise to his mother, to stay and be strong, and never forget. He’d managed so far—the problem was despairing every time his attempts to find his mom and sister failed. He’d been doing so ever since tracking the right resources during high school, but to his bitter disappointment, their whereabouts just couldn’t be traced.

Nadech’s heart broke whenever he imagined his mother, the sweet fragile woman, out trying to make a living without anything in her pockets. And his sister Da, who had been stripped of a warm home. That was what he couldn’t forgive his father for. It was bad enough that his dad had stopped loving his mother, had made her leave when the marriage fell apart, but why did nong Da have to be punished too? How had his sister grown up after seventeen years? Was she healthy? Did she have enough to eat? Food tasted bland to Nadech, he could never stop wishing Da was there for him to share it all with. But he forced himself to eat because otherwise he wouldn’t survive to find them.

He still remembered the way the sunlight reflected off his mother’s wedding ring, still on her finger but without meaning anymore, as the door closed him away from the two of them. All these years he had never stopped hoping they would return. If he couldn’t find them, maybe they would come find him, and the safest bet was this house.

Nadech turned and slammed his fists on the desk. The house was his single last chance. No one would take that away. If his father wasn’t going to let him buy it, then what choice did he have?

The only way that both she and you can have this house is…by marrying each other.

Nadech picked up his phone.
-------------

Kim slumped her shoulders. “P’Nadech looked so unhappy when he came out of Uncle’s office. He must love this house very much. I wish Uncle would reconsider.”

“It’s too late. I heard Uncle Norachai say he is signing over the deed in two days.” Oh’s brow furrowed in concern for Nadech. He had confided in Oh many years ago, about why he would never leave this house, never try to run away again. It was tough watching Nadech lose hope of finding his two beloved people, when Oh knew he could do nothing. He was caught between the two people who he owed so much to.
“If the guy comes out of his room, tell him I’ll be at the office so he doesn’t have to come if he doesn’t want to.”

Kim tiptoed to Nadech’s bedroom door. She hated disturbing him, knowing he was not in a good mood, but she had never seen him so upset with Uncle before. Usually, Nadech avoided interacting with his father too much beyond work, so that the two seemed to exist in different worlds. Kim knocked.

“Leave me alone.”

She knocked again.

“I don’t want anything. Go away.”

She pursed her lips and knocked harder.

Nadech wrenched the door open. “I said—“ Seeing Kim, he cooled down and asked gently, “What is it Kim?”

She held up a box. “I didn’t get to give you your gift.” She had returned after the party cleared out, and Nadech had locked himself in his room

“You didn’t have to.”

She followed him inside and sat next to him on the bed. Nadech unwrapped the present. A picture frame lay on a soft navy blue blanket.

“The blanket is for your impossibly cold bedroom,” Kim said, rubbing her arms at the chill. She understood air conditioning was nice, but how could he stand it so cool all the time? “And that’s just a small keepsake for memories.”

Nadech smiled softly, which rose Kim’s heart. She was always trying to coax a smile out of him and was proud to say she succeeded more often than not. It made her happy being able to brighten a minute of his day, because Nadech seemed resistant to things people normally rejoiced at, like birthdays. “So, you know, if you decide to make the house Uncle gave you a true bachelor pad, you won’t miss us too much.”

Nadech looked up from the photo of him, Kim and Oh taken ten years ago, and stiffened slightly. “I’m not moving.”

“Hm?” She asked. “What did you say?”

“I’m staying here.”

“But Uncle—“

“Don’t worry Kim.” He turned to her and the smile returned, if only to reassure her. “I’ll talk to dad again. And…” he unfolded the blanket and wrapped it around her, “I won’t have to miss you, because you’ll be staying with me. Both you and Oh. Thank you for the gifts.”

Kim leaned against him with his arm around her. If he could really convince Uncle to not sell the house, she would be glad, because it was the first real place she’d ever considered a home. However, any place would do, honestly, if Nadech was with her, because besides Oh, she always felt safest with Nadech. Almost two decades together and she had grown to love him, but not in the same way she loved P’Oh.
-------------

“If it was about me missing our date, I’m sorry.”

“It’s not that. Look Yaya, I don’t like sneaking around people’s backs like this. If you don’t think your parents will accept me—“

“They will! I just need some time to break the news to them.”

“We’ve been secretly dating for over three months. I really like you, but I can’t wait any longer. With or without your parents’ acceptance, I want to be able to show our relationship freely to the world. You should go. I want some time alone.”

She supposed it had started out with the usual argument—it was the only real thing they had to argue about: her parents. Yuke didn’t like dating secretly, but Yaya knew her parents wanted her to marry into a more powerful family, one with equal status. Yuke would never make their cut.

Hadn’t she always been their rebellious princess? But for some reason, she knew that her parents would never let her step out of line when it came to something as serious as a relationship that might possibly lead to marriage and even if she couldn’t stand the value they put on social reputation, she couldn’t simply hurt them by running off with a man and becoming a part of his family without their permission.

Her footsteps fell more heavily as she entered the house. Yaya found her parents waiting for her.

“Sweetie, come here! We have wonderful news!”

It was not wonderful like her mom had claimed.

“How can you guys do this to me? You’re going to give me away without even asking me first? Like an animal you don’t want anymore?” She yelled.

“Honey, we love you. That’s why we want to make sure you’re well taken care of.”

“But money isn’t the only thing that can take care of me! Have you met the guy? He's deranged!”

“How can you say that? Weren’t you with him at his birthday party?”

That set off another landmine in her, remembering his arrogant self-superiority. “No. We were simply…standing next to each other.” To admit that she had even spoken with HIM would make her parents assume she was finally interested in one of the men they’ve scouted out for a husband. “A person like that would never want to associate with me.” She could vividly sense his cold eyes on her.

“That’s not true. He spoke with your father personally,” her mother said, barely able to contain her excitement, “And proposed for your hand.”

That had to be a mistake. “What?!”

“Believe us. A good and proper man like Khun Nadech is not found easily. I know he’ll make you happy.”

“You say that like you know him so well. I refuse! As your daughter, I want the right to choose who is in my life.”

“Enough,” her father said. “We have always let you run freely as you wish. But this is a matter of your future. You must learn that you can’t always get what you want, and sometimes it is for the best.”

At that, Yaya’s eyes stung with tears. “So now that it comes to the most important moment in my life, I have no control over it.” She ran up to her room.

Yaya was not as sentimental of a woman to believe marriage was the turning point in her life. Not everyone could live happily ever after with a prince charming, she was not that delusional. But marriage was the union of two people, who would be together through good and bad, sickness and health and she had never thought it was right for anyone to make such a big commitment unless they truly meant it. Now, she didn’t even have the right to pick that person for herself. She wasn’t free like her father had said. How is it that her parents had protected and loved her so much that she wouldn’t dare hurt them, and then they just drop her into the hands of someone else so suddenly?

Chapter 4 Care for Her

“Are you sure this is your final decision?”

“I’m sure. After all, it’s like you said. It’s time for me to have my own space and start my own…” Nadech looked away, “family. Besides, Khun Arich has been our most reliable partner in the department of architecture. Are you satisfied dad? You get a daughter-in-law and a permanent business partner all in one. This is what you wanted?”

“That’s true; your union is very advantageous to us. Khun Arich had not objections?”

“Why should he? His wife sounded especially enthusiastic.”

“Then you can’t disappoint them. Take care of their daughter.”

That struck a nerve. Nadech stood up. “You don’t have to tell me. Though we hardly know each other, I know my duty and I know what is right, unlike…” he couldn’t finish saying that he would never be like his father, who could let his own wife just walk away with a child.
It seemed like he would never have a real finished conversation with his dad. When they were at work, they were boss and employee. When they were in front of guests, they were patron and ward. Father and son? It was a pitiful act.

-------------

Nadech stepped out onto the back porch and noticed Kim. Seeing her shake with sobs, he immediately dropped to his knee in front of her.

“What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Did someone do something to you?”

“P’Nadech,” she cried, “you’re mean. You’re getting married and you didn’t tell me.”

He wiped her tears. “I’m sorry. The decision was made recently.”

“You’re getting married, then what about me? I thought we…I thought that you wanted me to be with you.”

He had thought so too. Well, as little as he spared the time to think about marriage, he supposed the only woman he had considered to have by his side was Kim. And he couldn’t deny he’d sensed the way she felt for him. “I do want you with me. I care about you.”

“Then why are you marrying another person?”

“Kim,” he took her hand, “I want you to be with me, but it can’t be more than friends, because I’ve decided to get married. Maybe before, we would have been able to live differently, but we can’t anymore. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you. Okay?”

Fresh tears budded in her large eyes that filled with anguish. She stood up. “I don’t understand. You say that, but why have you done this?”

“Kim!” He called after. He sighed, hating to see her like this when all he’d ever done before was dote on her.

But she would learn why he’d made this decision. And Nadech knew she would understand, because she too had once been deprived of a home. It wasn’t too big of a sacrifice to make her sad just once, was it?

Once again, Nadech couldn’t help the resentful emotions directed at his father for leaving him with this single source of hope. Even the estate in Khorat wouldn’t help, because he knew his mother had never visited there, in fact, had never left Bangkok all of her life and would have no way of knowing how to get there. So if he had to wait all of his life, Nadech would never leave this house.

“Kim?” Oh asked when Kim ran into his arms and cried into his shoulder. “What’s wrong?”

“P’Nadech is getting married all of a sudden. What am I going to do? I don’t want him to!”

Oh patted her head comfortingly. “He has to. It’s the only way Uncle will let him keep the house.”

“But why is it so important that he has to marry a stranger?” she asked in anguish.

Oh debated whether to tell Kim about Nadech’s hopes. But otherwise, she might not be able to move on. So he told her all about Nadech’s pain.

She frowned. He said, “You can’t tell anyone. Nadech doesn’t want the other family to know, otherwise he’ll basically lose his chances. It would never sound like a good reason to marry their daughter.”

“But can’t we try to reason with them?”

“Kim, it can’t be done. We’d be going against Uncle’s wishes if we got involved.”

She nodded. She couldn’t bring herself to disobey Uncle Norachai’s wishes, or hate him for them either, not after everything he'd done for her and her brother.

“Without this hope Nadech clings to, he loses everything.”

“But he’d have us. He’d have me.”

Oh shook his head and she knew it was not enough. She knew she could not replace someone so dear to the heart of a person like Nadech.

“Kim, you’re a lovely woman. You might think Nadech’s the only one for you, but that’s because you grew up with him. Now he has someone he has to take care of so you have to let him go. Okay?”

Later that night, after she’d calmed down, Kim apologized to Nadech. To her relief, he stretched his arm towards her and she sat with him like they always did, her head on his shoulder.

“Kim, you’ll always be important to me.”

She nodded.

“Thank you for your support.”

He had given her so much and she had never had anything to give back. So Kim decided she would help him. She was going to help Nadech in any way possible to remain the owner of the house, and hopefully, eventually be free of his bride.
-------------

The first day they met outside the club, Mark had asked, “Should a young lady such as yourself be working at this kind of place?”

This was after taking down the bozo whose hands had wandered a little too close to her body for her liking. Mark hadn’t liked it either.

“The kind of place that will earn me more money in tips in a night than a week’s wage at a regular restaurant? Hell yeah.” And then she had shoved him out of the way to aim a spin kick at the drunk lecher who’d returned to avenge himself.
Dusting off her hands, she replied, “I think I can handle it. But to show my gratitude for earlier, I will accept your offer to drive me home.” She stepped over the unconscious body of the drunk guy.

That was the night Mark fell in love.

Everyone who was anyone to her called her Mint. She had granted Mark the privilege of joining such an exclusive group from that first day on because he was “less of a douche bag than other guys”. She was twenty years old and working two jobs so that she could buy a car, so that her aunt wouldn’t have to walk the long distance to the market where she sold vegetables.

“I can’t do it myself every day since we have bills to pay.”

So Mint began working at one of the clubs frequented by hi-so partiers, as a waitress.
“Not some showgirl,” she clarified to Mark. “So if you thought that act of gallantry back there would earn you some free swipes at my booty, forget it.”

“I get it. You’re off-limits.”

But he eventually won over her heart, as she’d already done to his completely, ending his streak as the Womanizer. Wouldn’t Oh be shocked to hear that Mark hadn’t cleared the bases with his special lady yet, and Nadech would be surprised if Mark kept his eyes on only one girl. But she wasn’t playing hard to get. Mint was simply Mark’s innocent little lady, whom he was satisfied to have fill his mind with sweet memories of her spunky attitude and tough outlook on life.

After they started dating, he’d suggested that she stop working at the club, but prideful as she was, he would have been surprised if she actually agreed.

Mark entered the club and immediately honed in on the one shrouded in a red dress that brought out an alluring silhouette of curves, accentuating her small waist, tapering at her knees and flowing to her feet. It showed off less skin than the guests regularly saw, but the never-ending material drew eyes to her long legs and did nothing to keep the fellas from staring. Mark was no exception. Hey, he could keep his hands to himself, but his mind could only be controlled so much.

She carried two trays of shot glasses, skillfully dodging yet another pair of hands. He sighed but kept his promise to not interfere while she was working. She’d proved often enough that she could take care of herself.

At the end of Mint’s shift when she had changed, instead of taking the usual bus, she met him outside and he drove her to her small plaster-white house as usual.

He brushed his lips against her forehead. “I missed you.”

Mint gave him one of her enchanting smiles, the ones that reminded him she was younger than the red dress and makeup made her seem. “Same here. How was your friend’s birthday party?”

“Oh boy. I don’t think any of us saw that coming. That reminds me. When’s your birthday?” He’d learned so much about her in such a short time, and yet, she seemed to evade even the most basic facts.

“That’s not really important.”

“If you don’t tell me,” Mark wrapped his arms around her, “I’ll give you a gift every day, since I don’t want to miss it. You should celebrate the day you were born, you know.”

“I celebrate every day that I’m alive,” she pronounced.

And then there were times she seemed older and wiser than the most intelligent people he knew. Mark couldn’t help thinking of Nadech, who was also unconcerned about birthdays. The difference was that Mint didn’t see the significance of holidays because she lived each day like it was a gift, while Nadech passed each day like a tedious chore in life.

“Next time I go back home, I want you to please come so that I may introduce you to all of my friends. I want them to know you.” He sent her off with a good night kiss, promising to be back in the morning because he knew she was tired from work.

Mint felt breathless as she closed the door behind her. Mark wanted to introduce her to his friends. He’d said so before, but this time he’d really insisted on it. Mint didn’t know if that would be such a good idea. Would she get along with such upper-class people, since Mark was obviously nothing like her? He was of the same status as the people who came to the club, except more refined, more respectful.

“Mint, you’re back dear?”

“Yes Auntie. Mark dropped me off.”

“How sweet of him,” Auntie Sri said. Mint noticed that Mark often did things which made Auntie say that. “Can he join us tomorrow for a meal?” Auntie asked.

“I think so.”

“Would you like some fish soup? Or are you too tired?”

“Mmm, it smells good!” she exclaimed, sliding into the slightly cramped kitchen with cracked floor tiles where years of fond memories remained. “I think I can manage to stay up a bit longer for this!”

Her aunt pushed a strand of wavy hair behind Mint’s ear. “Go change then. And wash your face. I want my Mint to be in the kitchen.”

She giggled, knowing her aunt hated the thick makeup she applied for work. “Yes Auntie.”

The kitchen was small, the house was old, she met too many people at work who she had to fend off, but she had two wonderful people in her life that she was thankful for.

Chapter 5 Strangers Under One Roof

Yaya glared at the man who sat across from her, the one who had not only made a fool of her during that night but caused her to miss her date. Geez, even in informal clothes, a simple long-sleeve and slacks, the man still looked like he was at a business meeting.
Or sentencing someone to death.
His back was stiff and his mouth set seriously while his eyes were focused on a point in the wall as if he was the only one in the room.

Yaya couldn’t help sighing. Did they really expect her to marry this pokerface? Unable to stand the pressing silence any longer, she cleared her throat. “So. You called my dad and proposed.”

Finally, he looked at her. “Correct.”

What was this, a spelling bee? “We’ve only met once. And I did not gain the impression that we particularly enjoyed one another’s company.”

“It was tolerable.”

Yaya’s jaw dropped. “Excuse me? You say that like it’s my fault you had to endure my presence.” She crossed her arms. “Why do you want to marry me?”

“Do you want to hear something romantic like I fell in love with you at first sight?”

“I’d know you’re lying.” Did she imagine it? She thought she saw a shadow of a smile flicker in his eye. No, she must’ve hallucinated. Besides, he was mocking her. “I want the truth.”

He eyed her for almost a minute before answering. “My father was going to sell this house to your parents if I didn’t agree to the arrangement.”

“Why did he not give you the house?” It was none of her business but the question was out of her mouth from immediate curiosity.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” and she noted the bitter edge to his reply.

“Let me get this straight. You’re marrying me, a complete stranger, for a house?” And here she thought arranged marriages couldn’t get any sadder. Though technically this wasn’t ‘arranged’ seeing as he had proposed. “Is there buried gold here or something? Marriage isn’t something to be taken lightly.”

“Are you going to declare that marriage has to come from love? As long as you have a comfortable life, you shouldn’t worry about something as fleeting as love. Forget about fairytales. What we have here is a deal that is advantageous to all of us. We’ll all be happy.”

“I suppose you overlooked me when you were counting this list of people who are ‘happy.’ You know what, I’ve made my decision. When my parents get back here, I’m telling them that the idea of a wedding is off!” To her satisfaction, he looked up in alarm.

“No.”

“Yes!”

“What’s going on here?” Nadech’s father entered with Yaya’s parents and the lawyer of the Phraisong family, Patchata.

“Mom, dad, I’ve changed my mind.”

Her parents protested, but Khun Norachai said, “If Yaya doesn’t agree willingly, then we’ll have to cancel it. Patchata, bring me the deed that I filled out. I will have Yaya sign it.”

“Dad!” Nadech got to his feet. “You can’t go back on your word. We had an agreement.”

“She has the right to refuse.”

“Let us talk to our daughter. I’m sure she misunderstood something.”

“I understand that this isn’t going to work,” Yaya refused.

“Yaya,” her dad reprimanded.

“He’s a selfish, mean bully!”

“You’re a spoiled rude brat.”

Yaya pointed at him. “See? Hey, take that back you arrogant—“

“You don’t know anything, just don’t interfere,” Nadech interrupted in that cool tone which infuriated her.

“Patchata, the form please,” his dad said.

“Just a second sir.” Patchata pulled out a document while ruffling through his folder.

“—don’t want me to interfere in my own marriage? What the h—“

“—You’re going to marry me and that’s final.”

“Oh really? Well, not if I get what you want first!” Yaya rounded the coffee table and snatched the paper Patchata had in his hand. She grabbed a pen and signed her name at the bottom. “Ha! I just signed the deed your dad wrote out for me! This house is mine alone, so get out!”

Her parents began their scolding at her.

“Uh, actually…” Patchata held Nadech back as he was about to go to Yaya, and whispered something by his ear. Nadech laid his eyes on Yaya.

She frowned as he stepped towards her and exclaimed, “Hey!” when he yanked the document from her and took the pen too. “It’s no use crossing my name out. Everyone here witnessed me sign it.”

Finishing, he set the pen down and to her surprise, he smirked. “Yes, everyone here saw both you and I sign our…marriage certificate.”

“What?!”

Patchata grinned sheepishly. “I was looking for the deed under all the other documents and Khun Urassaya just grabbed the certificate.”

“Why would you carry this around?!” Did he have any idea how dangerous this piece of paper was?

“I have to be prepared for certain situations,” he said.

“That document is invalid! Dad…”

Her father cut her off. “You signed it legally in the presence of a licensed lawyer. Even if Patchata says it is invalid, I will consider that it is legal. You’ve grown up now, you can’t be reckless anymore. I believe this marriage will teach you to mature. Khun Norachai, I agree to have my daughter marry your son. As soon as possible.”

“How can you say that?”

“Listen to your father first,” her mom said.

“I won’t! This is crazy!” She stomped out, ignoring her mother’s calls.

When she asked him why he wanted to marry her, he didn’t know why that comment about love at first sight had slipped out. Probably because it was ridiculous, since at first sight he’d thought she was a boy. That had amused him, though he didn’t let it show. But he’d answered truthfully afterwards because it was a waste of effort to lie, since she wasn’t someone he deemed gullible. Of course, she turned out to be a typical romantic. Women.

Then she went and tried to win over him by signing the deed. He would have to thank Patchata properly later for being so unnecessarily prepared with different documents.

Nadech caught up to Yaya and stopped her by the arm.

“Let go. This is all your fault! You have to tell my dad we’re not getting married.”

“My fault? I was just following your lead, I mean, you were so eager to sign it.” He looked her in the eye. “Now that you’re going to be my wife,” she made a disgusted face, “Keep in mind that I’m not letting off your impulsive and immature behavior. So don’t even think about trying another trick like what you almost did with the deed.”

She snarled, “Don’t worry, because there’s no way in hell I’m becoming your wife!”
-------------

All in the blur of a week, she had argued with her parents, had yelled, had tried to be calm, had even cried for the first time in years, but they had not yielded to her. Plans for an engagement were immediate. Although Khun Norachai had told the lawyer to void the marriage certificate, it did nothing to change her father’s mind, except that he accepted they would have an engagement first.

She hadn’t imagined that her parents, who had hardly ever put her in a time out as a child, would really make her do this. This time, she hadn’t even done anything wrong, yet she was condemned to marry some jerk who was probably too prideful about his family wealth and image to give up a stupid house.

That was the conclusion she had drawn from his unexplainable actions. She learned from Margie that the house was viewed by the public as something of a shrine to their lineage of fame and success, since it was built after their family business boomed. He must not want to lose that image.

Nadech and his father had come by twice during this process, but Yaya had refused to step out of her room. From her window, she already saw too much of the man she despised: Nadech and his rigid posture, his indifferent attitude, the glance at his a watch that meant he obviously didn’t want to be there. It aggravated her the way the maids all squealed at the sight of him.

And in all this chaos, she hadn’t even had the courage to tell Yuke…

“Wait.” Yaya threw back the covers of her bed. All this time she had been trying to defeat them. Instead she could have run away, could have been hundreds of miles from here already with a new life!

Thoughts of yet another escape were interrupted by a maid.

“Miss, you have a guest.

Yaya’s hope rose at the sight of Yuke standing in their garden. Before, she would have panicked that her parents would find out he was seeing her, but she didn't care at the moment. She was so happy to see him because he could help her!

Chapter 6 Dark Knight, Hidden Princess

“What are you doing here?” Yaya asked, though her anticipation for the new plan was rising.

“You missed our date last night and didn’t called me.”

Yaya shifted guiltily. “Things have not been good around here. I’ll tell you all about it now though and maybe we could—“

“There’s no more we.”

She froze, confused.

“I’m sorry Yaya. But I’ve grown weary of this relationship. At first, it was fun, but obviously there’s no hope for us since you don’t believe your parents like me. It’s too bad because I used to like you so much.”

Used to?

“And I don’t want to lie to you anymore. I’ve found someone else. I’m sorry. But hey, you’re a pretty girl. I’m sure you’ll find another middle class guy to fall in love with you. And I wish that guy luck. I wonder how long it’ll take him to find out he doesn’t stand a real chance with your rich parents.”

His mocking statement about her parents set off an angry pounding in her.

“I mean, I like you because I thought you didn’t care about my status, but obviously you do since our relationship was kept hidden for so long. Were you just having fun knowing it would displease your parents if they knew I was with you, but never really intended for them to find out? Well,” he scoffed, “from what I know, you don’t act enough like the normal upper crust group to fit in with them, not after running away from them for so long. I doubt any of them will find you attractive enough to keep, and since your parents won’t accept anyone less, I guess you’ll end up alone in the end.”

Immediately her pride built up a mask to hide her pain. But much more than pain was the rage bubbling inside her that she had to control in front of him. She somehow managed to speak without wavering. “Well, it’s convenient that you thought to come here. It just so happens that I HAVE found someone.”

“Really?” he said with disinterest. “Who is he?”

“Yaya, there you are.”

The two turned to see who had intruded.

“Is this another friend of yours who’s come to congratulate our engagement?”

“What?” Yuke asked in disbelief.

But it was Yaya who was more astonished. For once Nadech actually allowed his clothes to not be impeccably assembled. It wasn’t a big difference really since he still wore a clean tailored black suit. But with his tie loosened and two buttons undone, along with a relaxed gait as he strode down the garden path while holding a bouquet of lilies in one hand, he appeared to have walked out of a romance novel. Certainly if he was an illustration from a novel, anyone observing his entrance would assume he was back home after a day of work and had decided to pick up a floral surprise for his beloved. And the observer would conclude she was the beloved target of his affections, because the way his eyes focused on Yaya was as if all the stress and demands of the day were lifted off his shoulders at the mere sight of her. He presented the flowers to her.

“You’re getting engaged to Nadech Phraisong? You were serious?”

Recovering from her initial daze, Yaya looked at Yuke hard, then smiled. “I see you recognize him. You were saying that I didn’t fit in with my class of people? Well, you’re right. But,” her smile broadened as she gazed adoringly at Nadech, “I’ve found someone who understands me. You said you were tired of waiting for me, and for my parents’ approval? Well, I was getting tired of it too. You should have taken things into your own hands.”

“What do you mean?”

Yuke couldn’t wait; he didn’t even try to understand that unless her parents knew how absolutely they loved each other, they would never be allowed together. The more Yaya thought about it the more disappointed she felt. “Nadech asked my father for my hand immediately after we met. And you see, it’s not that my parents chose him because of his status, but because he proved to them that he’s worthy of being with me when he took action.”

“This is bullshit,” Yuke retorted.

“Watch your mouth. If you are not here to wish my fiancée well, then I suggest you leave.”

Yaya looked up and found that the normal Nadech had returned, eyes glowing with disdain. But of course, he couldn’t have been completely himself because he actually slipped his hand around her waist protectively.

“Do you honestly want to marry her?” Yuke asked. “Up until just now, we were in a relationship.”

“Then thank you for taking the time to come here and end things so cleanly. I’m sure with the engagement preparations, it slipped Yaya’s mind,” Nadech replied coolly, making Yuke’s face harden at being pointed out as so insignificant. “It doesn’t matter to me who she associated with in the past because from now on, she belongs to me.”

“If you’ll excuse me, I have a few more engagement dresses to try on. I wish you well. Good bye.”

Yuke clenched his jaw when she took Nadech’s hand. This was far from what Yuke presumed when he came here. He hadn’t thought Yaya was deceptive enough to hide this from him, but obviously, she must be moving on.
Yuke watched the way Nadech held her so gently, and when she turned away to lead him inside, he found Nadech firing him with a dark look, one that warned him to stay away. Was this man in love with Yaya?

Once the door was closed, Yaya tossed Nadech’s hand aside. He covered his mouth with a fist and she glanced over thinking he was laughing at her, but his face was impassive.

She had no idea what to make of him now that he’d saved her from humiliation out there. Actually, he must have witnessed much of the humiliation before stepping in.

With what she hoped was a dignified and indifferent manner, Yaya said, “What are you doing here?”

“Visiting my fiancée. Aren’t you glad I did?”

“That’s questionable. I could have handled it fine by myself.”

“Really? ‘I wish you well’? That sounded like a line from Shakespeare’s time.”

“Excuse me if I can’t act as well as you.” The realization that Yuke broke up with her washed over her completely for the first time. “If there’s nothing important, I’d like to be alone now.”

“Are you going to grieve over your break up?”

“None of your business!”

“Someone like that is not worth your time. Just forget him.”

Steaming inside, Yaya smacked him with the bouquet.

“What the heck? Is this how you repay me? You owe me you know.” He raised his hands to defend himself and captured her wrists.

“As if! You’re the one who’s messing up my life! What right do you have to just tell me to forget about someone who meant so much to me? You insensitive blockhead! My parents are betrothing me to you all because you’re selfish! This is your fault so what you did was only a fraction of what you owe me!”

Nadech felt the breath knock out of his chest when he saw tears pool and fall on her cheek and instinctively, he wiped them away. He knew she was right. But he replied unsympathetically, “Finish trying on your dresses.”

She pushed past him and up the stairs. Nadech stared at the bent up lilies. He knew his father’s order to come visit Yaya would be meaningless. It wasn’t like she’d been eager to greet him the first two times he showed up. He would have rather not seen her, than to have the image of her crying in his mind. He sighed. Why were women so complicated?

In her bedroom, Yaya crawled back under her blanket and wore herself down with tears.

She really liked Yuke. Once they’d become ‘official’ she had put all her effort and used every trick in her book so that she could date him without her parents finding out. If he had loved her, then it seems like he’d fallen out of it. And the things he accused her of proved she shouldn’t be wasting her time crying over him, just like Nadech said.

The brilliant idea of running into the unknown world and living a free life was not going to happen. And just when she thought she finally found the courage to tell her parents about her boyfriend—ex-boyfriend.

Nadech had been right again. She hated it, but he was right after all. Love was fleeting. Perhaps she should count her blessings and resign herself to the life of being Nadech Phraisong’s wife after all. His image played in her head. “Who'd have known his acting was so good.”

It was with bitter irony that she felt grateful to him for appearing when he did. Perhaps because he was so indifferent towards her, she almost felt thankful for the engagement. Because at least she knew she didn’t like him, and therefore he would never hurt her the same way she was hurting now.

Hours later, after missing dinner, her mom joined her and Yaya laid her head on her mom’s lap like she used as a child. Her mom thought she was only upset about the engagement and there was no point in explaining her secret boyfriend—ex-boyfriend—now.
-------------

“I wonder where Mark is. I’m sure he wouldn’t want to miss this.” Oh looked around.

Nadech almost said he wished he was in Mark’s place so that he could miss his own engagement party, but that wasn’t true. And when Nadech lifted his eyes, the reason why he wouldn’t want to miss the engagement appeared at the top of the stairs.

Had she stopped crying? Or was makeup covering it up?

Nadech gave himself a mental shake. No, she had nothing to do with his wanting to be here. The sole purpose of this was so he could retain the hope of finding THEM.

But his attention diverted once Yaya reached the last step and he was provided with a close up of her in her traditional engagement outfit. The pale pink color was soft against her skin, while illuminated by gold trimmings. Her hair was pinned back from her face but a tendril of wavy hair curled loosely down her neck.
Nadech wondered why he should notice these things, when beautiful things had never held his attention for long. And to his immense chagrin, his fingers suddenly itched to reach up and push that lock of hair past her shoulder. Reminding himself she was the cause of the chaos in his life at the moment, he re-steadied his mind and held his hand up to receive her.

Yaya’s glittering eyes narrowed at his hand. She glanced over and found her parents watching, so she was forced to accept it.

With her beside him, Nadech was glad that she was out of his line of vision, only to find himself distracted by a wonderful soft fragrance that he knew was hers.

“It’s time,” Oh said, seeing Uncle Norachai signal to him.

After the traditional ceremony and events were finished, Yaya changed her dress and she and Nadech opened up the dance floor. Somehow, her feet moved across the floor, almost mechanically. She was reminded of having met Yuke at a dance just like this, except it was at a charity event, more casual and relaxed.

“Stop stepping on my toes.”

Startled out of her daze, she turned her head and found Nadech surprisingly close. “Sorry,” she muttered.

More people joined the dance. Just as Yaya’s mind was wandering bitterly back to Yuke, she found Nadech’s face right in front of hers so that she was forced back into the present.

“You look like you’re pining over a secret lover.”

“I’m not pining over anyone,” she hissed back. It wasn’t like she wanted to think about Yuke. But she’d thought he was the one. The one she loved, the one who loved her, the one who would get her out of this mess. A fresh wave of regret stiffened her body. Ironically, the one she wanted to run from had come to her rescue, but there was no way she was going to thank him.

Yaya tried to stop their dance, but he held on tighter and forced her to keep moving.

“Stop.”

“I’m not letting you run off to cry over your ex-boyfriend.”

“I’m not going to cry,” she said through clenched teeth.

“Then smile.”

She stepped on his foot purposely, then complied with his command.

“Urassaya…” he whispered sternly.

“Why? Are you afraid that people will suspect how much we hate each other?”

“I don’t hate you. And I hardly care what others’ opinion of my personal life is, but I’d rather not deal with their nosy questions, so it would be wise of you to play your part well…the way I did for you the other day.”

Her jaw dropped. It was laughable that she had nearly thought he’d acted in front of Yuke to help her out. Obviously it was for his own benefit. “To thank you for your self-sacrifice, I think I’ll dance with every other man in this party for the rest of the night. Be prepared for those nosy questions,” she said. It didn’t matter that she’ll seem flirtatious because she’d never been bothered by what her parents’ friends thought of her anyway.

Growing smug at the idea of getting on Nadech’s nerves, Yaya was unprepared for when he dipped his head down and kissed her cheek.

“Have fun then, princess.” Before she could react, he turned to a frozen Oh. “Did you want to ask her for a dance?”

“Uh…yeah?”

Nadech handed Yaya over graciously.

“Are you ok?” Oh asked with an amused smile.

“Th-that…that idiot!” she whispered scathingly.

“I didn’t know you two had gotten so comfortable.”

“We haven’t!” she denied fiercely, quickly telling Oh about how she’d planned to annoy Nadech. “And then did you see what he did?!”

Oh chuckled. “Sure did. Bummer you won’t be able to have your fun because every other man saw what he did too. I don’t think they’ll dare approach you after that.” He laughed softly once again, oblivious to her indignation. “Have mercy on my toes, I’m simply the bearer of bad news.”

She would have sulked but Oh was such a natural mood lifter that she found herself enjoying his dance as he talked away. Seeing him so pleased, she asked what he found so amusing.

“Nadech doesn’t usually retaliate when provoked,” he answered simply. “The house will probably be more lively with you around. And Kim will have someone to talk to.”

“Who’s that?”

“My younger sister. Um…She couldn’t make it today.”

Despite her promise that she was happy to support Nadech, Kim still hadn’t had the courage to come to the engagement, and Oh didn’t want to push her.
If he was truthful, he was rather glad it was Yaya who would marry Nadech. He knew that even if Nadech and Kim were together, it would be because Nadech didn’t want to hurt her as a sister, not because he developed the same feelings Kim had. Oh knew his best friend too well, and knew that he didn’t spare time to think of romance. This was what made him feel guilty about wanting Yaya to be with Nadech.

Yaya’s voice drew him back to her. “Wait, you make it sound like you live with…”

Oh nodded. “We live with Uncle Norachai and Nadech.”

“You mean you can actually live with him?” The concept was unfathomable to her. It was perhaps one thing to know him, but to be in the same place as he is all day?

And then Yaya was about to ask Oh if he was related to Nadech somehow, but their second dance ended and Nadech appeared at their side. “Excuse me, I’d like to reclaim my fiancée before father accuses me of not being attentive to her.”

“Of course. Yaya, it was a pleasure.”

Yaya crossed her arms at Nadech. “I’m tired of dancing.” She left for the doors and out into her mother’s garden but to her dismay, Nadech followed her. “Did I invite you to come with me?”

“I didn’t want to come. Do you think I desire your company that much?”

“Tch, then walk somewhere else.”

“If someone sees and reports to my father, I’ll have to listen to a wearisome lecture. It’s safest to just bare it out with you.”

Yaya looked past him in surprise. “Khun Norachai!”

Nadech looked over his shoulder at empty space. Sighing, he realized she’d tricked him. Sure enough, Yaya was out of sight.

“Hmph, so it’s so painful being around me? Just wait until we’re living together, then you’ll see how much worse it gets. Oui!” she shook her head. “Why am I saying that? I don’t ever want to live with him! Maybe a tornado will come knock that house down and he’ll call off the whole thing.”

Alone at last, she savored her peace after days of preparing for this dreaded event. The bow tied at the back of her dress got caught in a bush and came undone. Trying to pull it without ripping anything, Yaya clucked her tongue and faced front. She jerked her head back. “Geez, you scared me. How did you find me?” she scowled.

Nadech shrugged. “Might have been the roses that told me something was bothering them and they couldn’t grow in peace.”

Curling her lip in offense, Yaya replied, “Feel free to continue your conversation with the plants.”

He stepped in front of her, blocking her way.

“What is it? Stop right there.”

But he came closer and lifted his arms on either side of her waist.

“Stop! What do you think you’re doing?”

His arms went around her.

“J-just because we’re engaged doesn’t mean you can take advantage of me. If you don’t move…” She pressed her hands against his chest that was way too close.

“Can you stay still?” he asked authoritatively. “Why do women always act like they’re being molested? Do you find yourself that attractive?”

Biting back a snark retort about his earlier peck, Yaya glared at his shoulder, but grew still, sensing the motions of his hand behind her.

“Done.” Nadech stepped back and she looked up at him before quickly walking around him. She felt the back of her dress. The bow was tied securely once more.

“It’s not perfect, but at least you don’t look like a careless child.”

She made a snarly face at him. He caught her arm as she walked by. “Seriously, don’t make any trouble for me tonight.”

She pulled away. “I am not obliged to do anything you tell me to.”

“I’m your fiancé.”

“Since when did that word translate to master?”

Nadech took a calming breath. “It doesn’t mean master. It means I expect you to respect my wishes.”

That didn’t fly well with Yaya. “Oh gosh! You’re right, I’ve been so inconsiderate. Hm, I wonder why it never occurred to me. Oh, maybe because you’ve totally disregarded my wishes from the start. Right from when we met on your birthday! And now that you have what you want, can’t I even ask for a little bit of space?” Breathing heavily from her anger, she turned on her heel.

“Wait.”

“Let go!”

“Urassaya, that’s not what I meant.”

They struggled. She shoved him away and he tripped on the light strips lining the walkway. Darkness enveloped them as if the moon had blown out all the lights.

“Oh crap!” Yaya swore. “Nadech? Nadech? Where are you?” She crouched to look for him on the ground. “Crap, crap, crap, the house lights went out too! Nadech, hurry and get up before my dad blames…” She cringed as she heard her dad’s voice. A flashlight blinked on from the door but instead of helping, it threw shadows across the lawn. Yaya tripped over something and went sprawling onto a body already on the ground.

Needless to say, there was no great progress in the relationship of the main couple that night.
