Chapter One

It‘s a Saturday night and Pitch is getting ready to close down the old bookshop. He can’t wait to get home, relax, and eat dinner with his grandmother. His grandmother is making his favorite homemade dish- laad nah.

“Ok, did I get everything? My keys…Got it!” he thought to himself. He turns off all the lights and walks out the door, pulls out the keys, and exclaims aloud “Shoot! How do I lock this thing?” Mike showed him how to do it earlier, but he forgot. “Why don’t they just get a new door?” he mutters keenly under his breath. As he is trying to figure it out, he heard a commotion. He looks over his shoulders and sees a pretty woman in a big brown, fashionable coat running towards him.

The women is running and panting, trying to find a way to escape the paparazzi. She sees a man next to the door of an old store. “Oh thank goodness! I see someone. Maybe he can help.” She thought to herself. So she runs faster towards him, with high heels, purse, and everything.

“Whoa, that women looks like she is gonna attack me and –“Pitch’s eyes widened with a confused expression as the women grabs him and pulls him back inside the shabby old book store. She forced him down besides her, hiding underneath the nearest table.

“Shh! Be quiet. I don’t want them to see me…” She looks at him and quickly thought to herself “They might ask him questions too” and then includes “...or us.” She stands with her knees and peeks out the window to see if anyone saw them.

Pitch wants to ask questions, but soon thought that maybe the woman is trying to hide from thieves, so he kept quiet as she commands him. He glances at her and sees how more pretty she looks when being close to each other. All of a sudden, he got a little sweaty. He is becoming more nervous. He has never encounter a woman so beautiful and this close before. Matter of fact, he never even he has a girlfriend! Pitch was always busy with school that he didn't have time for any girls. Though he did have crushes before, but nothing more than that. Being at 22 and still no girlfriend. His knees began to weaken and his heart bumping a bit faster than usual.

Still peeking out the window, the women sighs with relief. “Good, no one saw us” she whispers while retreating from the window and calmly sits down on her butt from her knees. Her knees are soaring from standing on it too long. She looks over at the confused man and notices him looking at her. “Is he sweating? And why is he-? Is he nervous?”She questions herself, while grinning and then tries to catch his eyes. Their eyes met. He is kinda cute, she thought.

“She has big, beautiful eyes” he thought to himself as he gazes deeply into her eyes. After awhile, he has to snap out of it.

Pitch then sees that the woman caught him staring at her so he shuts his eyes and quickly looks down as to avoid her. In his head, he says to himself “Stay cool and calm. Just stay cool and calm.” to help him from feeling any more nervous, but it’s not really working, so he turns his back towards her, hoping she didn’t notice him checking her out.

The woman couldn’t help but laugh silently when he turns his back towards her. Aw how cute she thought, so she decides to tease him and says loud enough just for him to hear “At least, I’m being stuck here with a cutie.” She widely smiles and stares at him to see any reaction.

Pitch gulps at the word “cutie”. She thinks I’m cute? …Naw, she’s just playing with me, but his heart thumps even faster.
“Uhh…thanks.” He says nervously, wishing this is all over with and thinking he’s making a fool of himself.
“Look, there’s no need to get tense. Just relax ok?” she feels bad for him being so nervous, but she kinda likes it, so she continues to tease him. “Turn around. You’re making me feel lonely and scared. What if those guys catch me and you won’t be able to witness it?”

As he turns around, he loosens up a little, but his heart is still beating loudly. “So who’s chasing you?” he asks her, trying to look at ease. He is still confused as to what happen. He feels himself sweating more and more.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s getting hot in here, don’t you think?” the woman asks as she takes off her coat, revealing a short, light blue dress she has on. The woman knows it shows some cleavage, but takes it off anyway just to tease him. The dress shows her curvy body shape. “Ahh, much better.” She glances at him to see his reaction. This is soo much fun, she says to herself while smiling at him.

“What the heck is she doing?” Pitch thought as he quickly and nervously gets up. “Ouch!” he says aloud, after his head hit under the table. He reaches for the lights. “I think it’s time you leave. I’m sure those guys are gone by now” He couldn’t help checking her out. She has a nice body. Be a gentleman, he thought. “And maybe, you shouldn’t…wear clothes…that are too revealing at a time like this” he says looking away, keeping himself from checking her out.

“Excuse me!” she springs up from under the table. The paparazzi are gone by now, so she has nothing to worry about. “Clearly, he doesn’t think I’m attractive!” she thought to herself and stops smiling. She does not like being told what to do. At this point, fans would usually ask for her autograph or take a photo, so she didn’t expect that response from him.

“I can wear whatever I want! I was just doing you some nice fan service. Clearly, you don’t appreciate that!” she snaps.

He thought “Fan service? Is she supposed to be some kind of celebrity I don’t know about? Maybe she’s a porn star…? Well, who knows? I was gone for two years. A lot has changed since I came back”

“You’re right. You can wear whatever you want. I’m sorry, but isn’t that why men are chasing after you? It’s dangerous to wear something like that at night time. I’m just telling you out of concern.” he replies, and could’ve stop there, but he can’t help himself to include “Besides, not everyone watches pornography.” Something tells him he shouldn’t have said that, but it’s too late.

Chapter Two

Her jaw drops as her eyes squint into a frown and shouts at him with disbelief “What?! How dare you accuse me of being a porn star!” She’s obviously upset and grabs her purse to smack him.

Pitch ducks and asks, “Wha- What? You’re not?”

“You’re still accusing me? You jerk!” she chases after him around the store with her purse. She is upset, but more angry than upset.

At this moment, the people outside the bookstore across the street are watching the commotion, speculating on what might’ve happen.

Old male witness number 1, “Well ya look at that. A young man just got caught cheating on his wife…”

Old male witness number 2, “Yeh and now he’s paying the price for it.”

They both laugh.

Both witnesses, “With a PURSE! AHAHAHA!” They both laugh even harder, enjoying a free drama.

Back to the bookstore…

Pitch got tired of being chase by a madwoman, so he makes an abrupt stop and quickly turns around for the purse in her hand. They both struggle to gain hold of the purse.

“Gosh, this woman is strong! Time to use my man strength.” He thought to himself, so he quickly grabs her right arm and places them behind her with his chest against her bare back. Suddenly, he feels a rush of heat all over his body.

“She smells nice. And she has nice back skin…Oh what am I thinking?! Don’t let her beauty fool you. She’s a madwoman!”

Then he grabs her free arm (left) and squeezes her wrist to let go of the purse. “Wow, two years of judo training in the US has finally paid off.” He thought to himself and smiles a big smile.

As she struggles to break free, she looks over her right shoulder at him.

“Do you think this is funny? You are hurting me! Let go of me RIGHT NOW!” she demands. She can’t believe this stranger turns out to be a freak.

“Pretending like he has never watch porno. Do I really look like a porn star to him? Doesn’t he know who I am?” she thought to herself.

Pitch didn’t want to hurt her, so he loosens up “You say I’m hurting you, but you were trying to hurt ME and without reason.” Perhaps he forgot how strong she is as she quickly breaks free.

“Without reason? You insulted me! Don’t you recognize who I am?”

Even though Pitch manages to get a hold of her once, he isn’t sure if he could do it again because she is so strong. Pitch fears for his life that she will come at him again if he doesn’t say the right words.

“Uh..no..?” He doesn’t know what else to say, but for some dumb reason, he asks “So you’re not a porn star?”

She looks at him with disbelief, but she is smart enough not to act out because he evidently knows some kung fu. Instead, she slowly approaches him and says sweetly “So what if I am? You already know the answ-“and then WHACK! She threw a punch at his nose. However, she is still not satisfied.

“Oow!” he cries out, holding onto his nose. “Ok, she obviously isn’t a porn star. That’s why she’s mad, but why does she have to dress like that? It’s so confusing!” He thought to himself and tries to apologize to her.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have ask th-“ Too late!

She already lunges forward with her purse in both of her hands, striking across his face. That hurt him real good because she struck him with the medal portion of her purse. She looks at him squeal with pain and eventually feeling sorry for him. “Gee, I know I’m supposed to be humble and forgive him for not recognizing me, but why won’t I stop being angry at him? He did try to apologize.” After she cools down, she drops her purse to go check if he’s ok.

Though still standing, Pitch still has to pull himself together. It hurt badly, so he shot her an angry look. He has never been so angry at a woman before. He doesn’t know how to should defend himself from an abusive woman. He doesn’t hit girls, so what should he do? “Does she think she’s a princess? What right does she have to smack me? Oh no, here she comes again”

As she draws closer to examine his hurt face with her right hand, he smacks it out of the way. “Don’t touch me!” he yells angrily at her. While he grabs hold of her left arm towards his right chest, he steps forward and softly trips her with his leg so she won’t be hurt as she takes fall. Then he holds down the right arm on the ground. With just his left knee on the ground, he’s on top of her.

Their eyes met again. His heart begins to melt at the sight of her eyes. He remembers how big and beautiful her eyes are…Then he starts to sweat heavily again.

“Wow he’s even cuter when he’s mad. I should get him mad often.” She grins. “Is he getting nervous again?” She grins even more.

Pitch is taken aback when he sees her smiling. He starts to loosen up however; he isn’t going to be fooled again. “Don’t try to trick me with your looks! I’ve already apologize and NOW it’s your turn!” yells out Pitch in an angry tone. He had enough of this madwoman already. He is hurt, tired, and hungry.

Chapter 2 continues...

Meanwhile, the two old witnesses are still across the street from the bookstore.

Old male witness number 1, “Hmm...I don’t see them anymore…”

Old male witness number 2, “That’s because they are on the floor.”

Old male witness number 1, “Ooo, are they having makeup sex?!”

Old male witness number 2, “LET’S GO SEEE!”

They head towards the book shop.

“Well? Are you going to apologize or not?” He gives her a serious look, but she just lay there and couldn’t help laughing at him.

“He’s trying waaay too hard.” She thought.

Pitch looks confuse and thought “Am I not being serious enough?”

Knock! Knock! Knock!

They both look towards the sound that’s coming from the store front window. They see two old men grinning and laughing at them. The old men are saying something, but they cannot make out the words.

Pitch listens closely and hears “Hurry up and teach that wife of yours a lesson!” He hears this repeatedly through the window and thought “What do they mean? Teach my wife?” Then Pitch’s eyes are wide open. He blushes and quickly sprang up from his position, letting her go.

She wonders why he let her go all of a sudden and got up. She asks Pitch “What are they saying?”

But Pitch ignores her “It’s not what you think sir. It’s a mistake. She is not my WIFE!” he explains, as he shakes his head and waves his hands in front of the old men out the window. Now, she understood why the old men are there and folds her arms. “Nasty old perverts!” she says under her breath. Pitch finally convinces the old men that he isn’t doing anything inappropriate so they left, feeling unsatisfied.

“I’m Kimberly by the way” She let out her hand for a shake.

Pitch turns around, but didn’t want to shake her hand. He is still mad at her for hurting him.

“Oh, what’s up with the mad face? I’m being nice to you. Now shake my hand. I don’t like to be left hanging.”

Pitch looks at her hand, but didn’t move.

Kimberly rolls eyes. “Fine then. I’m leaving. I don’t want to stay here at this ugly book store anyway. It’s so…old. I don’t see why anyone would want to work here, nor come around here.” said Kimberly as she looks around. Then she walks toward the front door to leave, but the door won’t open. She tries to open it one more time, but it won’t budge. “Oh no, we are locked in!”

“What? That can’t be. I have the ke-“says Pitch as he searches for his keys in both pockets, but they are nowhere to be found. Then he runs to the door and looks down out the window. There it is- the keys. Right outside at the bottom of the door. Kimberly walks to him. “Please don’t tell me the keys are outside…”

Pitch nods his head.

Chapter Three

Kimberly takes out her cell phone to call her two best friends. “Come one Yaya. Pick up.” No one answers. Then she calls Margie, but she too doesn’t answer. She releases a heavy sigh “Where are my two best friends when you needed them?” She thought while reclining on a chair. Then her eyes wander over to the man reading his book in the chair opposite of her on the same table. “You could at least tell me your name, since we are going to be stuck here together for awhile.” Kimberly gives him the sweet eye and a flirty smile. She is still running her game. “Gosh, I just can’t help, but make him more nervous around me.” She laughs to herself.

Though his heart flutters when she speaks to him, he manages to keep his composure. He is still mad at her for hurting him. The pain on his face still stings a little. “Pitch.”, says Pitch, keeping his eyes to his book. He kind of has a feeling that this madwoman is a big tease. He has to be more cautious before she tricks him into another attack. “You should stop laughing and start apologizing.”

“Apologizing?...Oh right. I am very sorry for hitting you earlier. It’s just that I’m not used to people not recognizing me. Sorry…There, you feel better now?” says Kimberly. She flashes him a big smile to show him her sincerity. She is sorry after all. She wants to check if his face is alright. “Can I see your face?” she says as she reaches out to touch his face, but Pitch brushes her hand aside.

“Don’t come near me.”

“Fine. Geesh. I was trying to be nice.”, says Kimberly, but Pitch is still fixated on his book, ignoring her. Pitch doesn’t want to deal with the madwoman right now. First, he’s hungry. Second, he’s hurt. Third, his keys are outside. And now he just wants to enjoy a good book with no interruptions. “I don’t want to make a fool of myself checking her out again.” Pitch thought to himself and continues reading.

“Whatever, he’s no fun anymore.” Kimberly says to herself as she picks up her cell phone and going through her contact list. “I can’t call my boyfriend right now. Taec is probably still getting away from the paparazzi….I can’t call anyone in my family, especially my older brothers. They’ll just start asking stupid questions…hmm there’s no one…but Mario. I can’t stand this guy, but I have no other choice.” She gave out a long sigh. Though Kimberly is reluctant to call Mario, he is her only hope to get home without any questions.

“Hey Mario!...I’m doing good. Can you do me a favor? …You are so nice! Well, I’m locked at a book store a block from Cassie Lounge. Can you come get me?…..Long story….10 minutes? Ok, Thanks!” Kimberly hangs up, shrugs, and rolls her eyes acting as if she’s disgusted by what she’s heard.

Pitch looks up from his book, “Well, you’re not being very grateful.”

Kimberly shot him a mean look and thought to her herself “You have no idea.” Mario Maurer is one of her annoying suitors trying to pursue her. Even though she loves to model, act, and her fans; she sometimes wishes she isn’t famous. The only reason Mario is on her contact list is because they are co-workers under the same company and often have photo shoots together. “Ugh. None of your business.” Says Kimberly as she snatches the book from Pitch.

“Hey, that’s mine!” says Pitch while trying to get his book back.

“So Pitch…Gee, what kind of name is that? Whatcha reading?” says Kimberly as she turns around to avoid him getting his book and flipping through the pages. Her eyes grew wide. “You like Harry Potter?...I love HARRY POTTER!”

Pitch stops trying to grab for his book and he watches her looking through the pages with glee. He says to himself “Maybe she isn’t so bad after all.” and his lips slowly curve into a smile.

“I see you’re on the third book. Ha. I’m on the sixth book. One more and I’ll be done.” says Kimberly showing off.

“Really? Well, I’ve reread all seven books five times. This is the sixth time that I’m rereading the series.” Says Pitch and wants to add “Beat that!”, but changes his mind as he doesn’t want to get attacked by her again, so he kept a humble face.

Kimberly turns toward Pitch and studies him. “Hmph! Trying to act cool?”

“Acting cool? You’re the one bragging,” says Pitch trying to look innocent and mimics Kimberly in his head “Ha. I’m on the sixth book. One more and I’ll be done.”

“Bragging? I wasn’t br-“

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

“Hey, Kimberly?! You in there?”

Kimberly and Pitch turns toward the door.

“That must be Mario.” Kimberly rushes to the door and Mario comes into the store with Pitch’s keys in his hands. He sees Kimberly and greets her as he is happy to see her. While he takes a look around the old book store, he wonders how she got locked in. Then Mario notices Pitch. His eyes widen and his jaws open in surprise. Pitch also has the same response except he wishes Mario didn’t see him here at the book store. “Great, now he knows where I work.” says Pitch to himself.

“Who is stupid enough to leave the key in the door?” Mario says and throws the keys at Pitch.
Pitch catches the keys as if expecting it to hit his face. When they were young boys, Mario always pick on Pitch and throw things at him. Pitch and Mario glares at each other and old memories came flooding on each other’s thoughts, thinking of a dark hidden past.

Kimberly looks at the both of them with a baffled expression. “Do you guys know each other?”
Mario breaks his glare and smiles at Kimberly. “No. *laughs* Can you wait for me in the car? I found something I like here. Your boyfriend is worried about you by the way, but that’s okay. You have me now.”

“Whatever.” says Kimberly, rolling her eyes and turns to Pitch “Bye Pitch. It was nice meeting you.” She gave him a wink and Pitch flashes a smile at her. Then she rushes to the white two-door Porche outside. “Why did I have to wink at him?” says Kimberly, smiling to herself. Her cheeks turn bright pink while waiting in the car. “It was a pretty fun night, but I’m still hungry.“ Then she thought about her boyfriend. “Why can’t Taec pay attention to me like Pitch did?” Kimberly gives a heavy sigh thinking about Taecyeon.

Mario is taken aback by what Kimberly did to Pitch.

“I don’t want anyone to know that we are half brothers, so don’t go spraying rumors.” says Mario with a mean glare.
Pitch looks at him with dismay. “You’re telling me as if I want the whole world to know.”

“Who knows? You might get money hungry. You don’t make much by working here,” says Mario as he looks around the small book store. He starts to grin.

“I’ve been doing fine without your father since I left with my grandmother in grade school. What makes you think I’d run back at this time?” says Pitch, his ears turning red and his fists clenching. He is ready to knock the teeth out of Mario for disrespecting him, but refrain himself when he thought about his grandmother. His grandmother might worry about him being late to dinner, so he has to get home soon.

Honk. Honk.

Mario looks behind him at the impatient Kimberly in his car. “I don’t want you near Kimberly or even talk to her again,” says Mario, pointing his finger at Pitch. “This better be the last time I see you.”

Pitch doesn’t want any trouble so he stays quiet. He just wants to get home and eat laad nah with his grandmother, who might be worried for him by now.

With that, Mario left and drove off with Kimberly. Pitch sigh heavily “What a night. Now I have to do some cleaning again. Damn, that girl is trouble. My grandma is probably wondering where I am.” After Pitch finishes cleaning, he takes a taxi home.

Chapter 4

When he got home, he sees his grandmother yelling at the lakorn she’s watching on TV. There will never be a time when she watches Thai lakorns silently for ten minutes. She gets pretty dramatic. If she is not yelling, she is laughing. If she is not laughing, she is yelling or if she’s not doing either of them, she is crying.

“Oh hey honey. Dinner’s on the table. You might have to microwave it though,” said his grandmother, not giving a sign of worrisome, but staying attentive to the TV. Pitch puzzles over his grandmother’s unexpecting behavior. “That’s weird,” says Pitch to himself. He didn’t want to bother his grandmother about Mario while she’s enjoying a late evening lakorn anyway, so he quietly steps into the kitchen and microwave his laad nah.

“Ummm. I’ve been waiting for this all night,” says Pitch as he ate happily while thinking about his encounter with Kimberly. He touched his face and it stings a bit. “Gah. That girl can swing.” Then he thought about Kimberly’s huge eyes and starts to smile. Mario’s voice replays in his head, “Your boyfriend is worried about you by the way, but that’s okay. You have me now.”

“Psh. She’s probably one of those cheating girlfriends. Celebrity relationships never last,” says Pitch while eating. His grandmother enters the kitchen and sat down with him.

“How was it? Is it good?” His grandmother asks, smiling at her grandson enjoying her food.

“Yes, of course. Your food is always delicious.” Pitch says and smiles back, but wonders why she hasn’t ask him where he’s been. “Aren’t you going to ask why I’m late?”

Pitch’s grandmother laughs. “Why should I? You’re a grown man of 22. It’d be embarrassing for Grandma trailing and calling after you all the time at your age, don’t you think?”

Pitch is appalled by his grandmother’s answer. “I guess things changed a lot since I left for the US. Grandma is usually worried sick about me staying in America.” Pitch thought to himself. “Oh yeah. *laughs* That’s right. So what were you watching that made you yell at the TV?” said Pitch.

Then his grandmother’s face lit up with joy and said, “There are these new actors and actresses that debut in this drama called Thara Himalaya.…” Pitch’s grandmother began to explain the storyline with enthusiasm while Pitch continues to eat, zoning out on her explanation. His grandmother soon stops talking.

“Grandson, are you even listening?”

“Yeah. I was. Sounds boring.”

His grandmother gave a soft laugh “One of these days, I’m going to make you watch it. The girl who plays Nam is so pretty. I heard she’s in her second year of college in real life. She must be really smart.” She turns to Pitch, who is still eating and doesn’t seem to pay attention. She becomes annoyed and slaps Pitch on the back of his head.

“Ow. Yes. Yes, grandma. She’s pretty. Very pretty and smart too.” Gosh, first it’s Kimberly and now it’s his grandmother.

“That’s right. What is wrong with you?” says his grandma with a puzzled look and notices a red color on his face. “What happen to your face?”

Pitch sighs “Nothing.” He fixes the back of his head. “I just bumped into a pole that’s all.”

“Well, I have some good news for you,” says Grandma, not believing his story. “I’m sure he has his reasons to not tell me” Grandma thought to herself.

Pitch looks up and wonders what news can be good enough to wipe out the thought of Kimberly attacking his face and his grandmother slapping his head.

“Your best friend, Nichkhun called earlier. He’s coming to Thailand next week. I heard he’s married too. I’m so excited. I wonder what his wife looks like.” Nichkhun is Pitch’s only best friend since middle school. Pitch and Nichkhun are so close that they are often mistaken as cousins. Nichkhun’s family is also close with Pitch’s grandmother. Both of their grandmothers use to sell vegetables in southern China together. He is now a member of a popular boyband in South Korea called 2PM and known to be the “Thai Prince” of Korea. Though he is very popular in South Korea and Thailand, Nichkhun never forgot Pitch as his best friend and in turn Pitch doesn’t want anyone to know that they are best friends to avoid publicity.

Pitch’s face glows “Really? Gosh, I haven’t seen that guy since I left for the states and he’s not married grandma. It’s just a reality show called “We Got Married” where celebrities pretend to be married”

“What kind of silly show does that? If you are married, then you are married. There is no pretending in marriage!” said his grandmother with her hands on her hips, but Pitch doesn’t want to bother explaining. It will only confuse her more. Even, Nichkhun’s grandmother is confused when Nichkhun tried to explain to her. He recalls the conversation with Nichkhun a couple of months ago while Pitch was still in the states about the reality show.

“Yes, grandma.”

“Nichkhun wants you to go meet up with him and his wife at the airport next week. Can you do it?”

“Of course I can.”

“Good. I miss that young man like he’s my second grandson. I’ll be going off to bed now. Good night, Pitchy” said his grandmother after she gave Pitch a kiss on the cheek.

“Good night, Grandma.”

Chapter 5

Two days later (Monday)

“Don’t forget your lunch!” said Grandma yelling after Pitch, who seems to be rushing out the door at the start of the morning. Pitch almost always forgets his lunch when he is in a hurry and his grandmother never fails to remind him.

“Ok, Grandma” said Pitch attempting to speak with French bread in his mouth. He runs back inside the small house to grab his lunch and then give his grandmother a quick hug. “Bye, Grandma”

“Bye Bye Pitchy!” Grandmother waves at him.

“Oh no. No. No. I’m going to be late. I shouldn’t have woken up late this morning,” says Pitch under his breath, while running to catch the transit bus to work. Pitch stayed up late the previous night reading the third installment of the Harry Potter series. He was reading at his favorite part where Harry won his quidditch match against the Slytherins. “I should’ve just waited to read it today at work, now I’m almost done with the book.” Pitch wonders what he will do at work after he finishes up reading the third book. Mondays are usually slow. It’s almost as if people decide not to eat ice cream on Mondays because it’s bad luck or something.

After Pitch got off the bus, he hurries to Baskin Robbins, an ice cream shop where he works six hours a day, five days a week. That’s thirty hours a week. Not very many hours, but he makes up the next ten to twelve hours a week at the book store on some of the evenings in order for him to have a full time work schedule. He needs all the hours he can get to support himself and his grandmother.

“Hey there, Pitch. Made it just in time. What gives? You’re usually in early.” says Christy, Pitch’s manager.

“Sorry boss lady. I woke up kind of late,” says Pitch putting his backpack down and getting his cash register ready. Christy is probably the most chill boss in the world. She doesn’t get upset easily, but always manage to keep people in check, so she’s cool with Pitch along with everyone else calling her “boss lady” or different nicknames like “lady mafia” or “big boss”. She can get pretty big headed sometimes though.

“Uh huh. That’s boss lady for ya. Haha. It’s cool. It’s bad luck on Mondays anyway,” says Christy and they both laugh. “At least you’re not always late like Jake over there,” says Christy, signaling her head towards Jake preparing the ice cream.
Jake looks up when he hears his name. “Aww come on, boss. I’ve been on time for the past three work days. Can’t you give me some credit?”

“Credit? Wow, I didn’t notice you have been on time. Maybe you were known to be late all the time that I don’t expect you to be on time,” says Christy, giving Pitch a wink and they both laugh. “I’m just kidding Jake”

“Sure boss. Just watch, I’ll be on time” Jake smiles, knowing the boss is just joking. Christy loves to make jokes and make everyone feel happy at work. Christy’s phone rings. She excuses herself and enters the kitchen. She came back out moments later with a worried expression.

“Sorry guys, but I got to leave right now. My son is sick. I got to pick him up from school and then find him a baby sitter. I might not be back though. Is that cool?”

Pitch and Jake looks at each other in agreement and turn to Christy. Though Pitch just started working for Baskin Robbins three weeks ago, he is already comfortable in his work environment.

“Of course it’s cool. We’ve been working by ourselves before. So we’re used to it. Don’t worry big boss. We got this,” says Jake in a reassuring manner. Pitch nods and said “Don’t worry about us. We hope your son feels better soon.”

“Thanks, gentlemen. I knew I can count on the both of you.” Christy smiles, grab her belongings, and hurries to her car out front.

Pitch and Jake enjoys the rest of the morning and the afternoon watching comedies on TV when there are no customers. When they are customers, they work diligently. Pitch and Jake are known to the local senior community for their bright smiles and gentlemen manners, so they often attract many senior customers. An old lady wearing a conical rice hat with a strap made of silk enters the store. “Oh hello Pitch. Hello Jake. How are yall fine young men doing?” says the old lady as she tips her hat back, revealing her dark and wrinkled face.

“We’re doing good, Mrs. Song. How are you?,” says both Pitch and Jake.

“You’re looking fine yourself also, Mrs. Song,” says Pitch, smiling. Mrs. Song gives a soft giggle. Jake whispers to him “Kiss ass” and Pitch nudge him with his elbow, causing Jake to squeal. “So how’s the sale going?” Pitch asks Mrs. Song. She sells fried bananas and tofu in a street vendor nearby. When she has time, she goes to visit Pitch and Jake with at least four fried bananas for them to eat.

“Going good. No fried bananas left for you young men today, but I sure would like some ice cream. It’s hot outside,” said Mrs. Song.

“Really? It’s only 2PM,” said Jake. Pitch nods in agreement.

“I know.” Mrs. Song starts to grin. “There are these two nice young gentlemen who bought all my fried bananas, along with all my tofu. Today is just my lucky day. Oh and they didn’t even want their change, so I have all this money left over.”
Pitch knew Mrs. Song work hard to sell all her food, so he decides to pay for her instead.

“Oh, Pitch. You don’t have to.”

“Nope, it’s on me. Besides, Jake and I have been eating your fried bananas for free. I’m glad you get to sell all your food today,” said Pitch giving her the biggest smile.

“Plus, you made a bonus today from all the change that the guys left you. Consider our ice cream to you as a bonus gift,” says Jake, handing Mrs. Song her favorite ice cream cone; mint chocolate chip.

“You boys are so kind. I hope both of you find nice girlfriends for yourselves.”

Jake chimes in “I already have a girlfriend and I’m planning to ask her to marry me soon.”

Pitch and Mrs. Song looks at him in astonishment. Pitch didn’t expect Jake to marry so soon. Pitch thought it is too early to marry at 26, but congratulates him anyway, along with Mrs. Song. After Mrs. Song bid them farewell, a young woman with pigtails, who look to be in her late teens, enters the store. She has on a school uniform with her backpack hanging on one shoulder.
“Hi Pitch!” said the young woman, while taking a seat nearby and then staring at Pitch with all smiles.

“Hi, Mint. How are you doing today?” said Pitch, smiling back and then attending to one of the customers who just entered the store.

“Hey Mint. Forgot about me?” said Jake, noticing how very attentive she is towards Pitch.

“Oh hey Jake,” said Mint, still staring at Pitch working.

“Figures,” said Jake under his breath and starts to attend the remaining customers. When the customers all left, Jake whispers to Pitch, who is reading his Harry Potter book. “Dude, can’t you tell that Mint likes you? She hasn’t stop staring at you since she came in.”

“Really?” Trying not to be conspicuous, Pitch turns to look over at Mint to see if it’s true, but Mint seems busy studying.

“Naw, I don’t think so. She’s studying. See?”

“Yeah. She’s studying now, but when you don’t look her way, she stares at you like she’s never seen a Thai man before. Seriously, dude. She’s been doing this for the past week and she hasn’t bought one thing from us. She is here for you, man. How can you not know?” said Jake, trying to lower his voice as he speaks.

Pitch puts his book down. Jake has been trying to hook him up with random girls ever since he told him that he has never had a girlfriend. It’s not that Pitch doesn’t like girls. He just couldn’t care to notice them when his mind is solely focus on school, work, or his grandmother. On top of that, he has bills to take care of by himself. Pitch also didn’t want his grandmother to work hard in the hot sun like Mrs. Song. “I don’t know, but I doubt it. She’s just a college freshman using our free wi-fi service to do her homework. How does that make her like me? I just work here.”

Jake looks at him with a face that reads “WTF?”

“Come on. What?” Pitch is annoyed by how Jake gawks at him, all wide- eyed.

“You must be really stupid around women. Now I know why you never have a girlfriend.”

Pitch is taken aback by what Jake just said. “What? I’m not stupid. I just…I just…”Pitch couldn’t finish his sentence. It’s true that Pitch has trouble approaching women or even just carrying a conversation with them, but he believes he couldn’t be stupid around women like Jake said.

“You just don’t know when girls like you.” Jake finishes it for him and says “Wow, I guess having a college degree doesn’t mean you’re smart with women, huh?”

“I know for sure she’s not interested in me. Well, I’m not interested in her anyway.”

Jake doesn’t seem surprise by his answer and rolls his eyes. “You say that for every girl I try to hook you up with. Mint is actually a pretty cute girl… Now I’m starting to think you’re gay.”

“I’m not gay and pardon me for choosing not to hit on a customer.” Pitch sighs from frustration. He’s been accused of liking men before.

“Dude, its okay if you’re gay. Just don’t hit on me. I have a fiancé already,” said Jake, trying to hold back his laugh so Mint won’t hear him.

“Psh. Fiancé? You haven’t asked her to marry you yet. Plus, you two only went out for a couple of months. Don’t worry. If I were gay, I’d choose a better looking guy than you and one that’s on time.”

Jake couldn’t believe his ears. Not caring if Mint hears him, he said aloud, “Well then excuse me for trying to help you get a girl. I should be looking for guys instead. I AM going to ask her to marry me. So what if we only knew each other for two months? I’m in love with her and I know she feels the same way. You wouldn’t know what love is because you never had a girlfriend…or a boyfriend, whatever your orientation is. ”

Pitch’s ears went bright red and his nostrils start to flare, making his face look like a bull ready to attack. Then Mint walks up to the counter and Pitch tries to hide his anger with a forced smile. “Would you like something?”

“Pitch?” said Mint, looking upset at Pitch in the eyes.

“Yes?” said Pitch, wondering why the long face.

“Is it true what Jake said?”

Pitch’s eyes widen in horror and think to himself “No! No one is suppose to know I never been with a girl. Now she’s going to think I’m a loser. Thanks Jake for keeping a secret.” Pitch is bad at lying, so he couldn’t deny his inexperience with women.

Pitch lowers his voice and said, “Mint, please don’t tell anyone.”

Mint begins to form tears in her eyes, causing Pitch to puzzle over her reaction.

“I can’t believe you like men!”

“What? NOOO!”
