Most foreigners like to go to north (esp. Chiang Mai) rather than spent their days in BKK whenever they are in Thailand. My friend went to Thailand last year but she didn't get to roam around BKK because she went straight to Chiang Mai upon arriving and she told me that there are lots of expats there. I think Thais just prefer BKK because that's the capital but whenever they wanted to have a little vacation around the country, they would definitely be in the north.
