Well, as you said, almost all Thais have a nickname. I think most of the time, we keep the nickname that family uses since childhood. Some nicknames rely with the first name (Rita Sririta, Vee Veeraparb) but most don't. Also, sometimes people would rename themselves, I think about nicknames like Cherry, Donut, Pancake, Pinky... Correct me if I'm wrong :p

Hehe. Some Thai actresses/actors have such silly nicknames. For example, Captain, Donut, Oil, and Pancake. LOL ^^

From their parents or other relatives. Usually all Thais will have nicknames because their actual name is long hence a shorter name to call them by. I think how Pancake got hers was because while her mom was pregnant with her she loved to eat pancakes and same goes for Donut I'm assuming. I'm kinda relieved mine doesn't sound as odd now lol.

Most thai and lao people from Laos and Thailand have nicknames. The ones born in the US normally don't have nicknames. I think nicknames are cute.

my cousin is named Sprite. my nephew is named Pepsi. my other nephew is named Turbo. we have a housekeeper at my house in thailand, she named her little boy "noam bung" and her daughter "nuey." basically, bread and butter. during pregnancy, she ate a lot of bread so when he was born she decided to name him bread. there's so many more...

nobody nicknames themselves. their parents or relatives do. except for some celebs who weren't happy with the nicknames that their parents or family members gave them. for example, someone whose nickname is Ping Pong changed it to something else when he entered the entertainment industry.

as for Poo (not sure if ur referring to Poo - Puri or Poo Praiya), the word itself means "hills" or "mountains" in Thai. in Puri's case, i think his nickname is just a short way to say his real name. but for Poo Praiya, her nickname is pronounced Bpoo, which actually means crab. it sounds funny to people of a different culture, but it sounds normal to Thai people.

You know with Oil or Thana, its not actually pronounce Oil as in petrol na lol but I don't know how the heck we end up spelling it 'OIL'

Sometimes the nick names that the stars have the directors or the person who made them into a star gives it to them, like I heard Aum Patchrapa, her nick name Aum was given to her by her manager or something before she became famous because her last nick name was kind of dull lol. Along with Poo (which means crab) lol, her last name is a stage last name... therefore changed purposely by her boss etc so that's how some of them got their nicknames or name.
