well.. in a way he is like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino where he was old and dying so he decides to end his life with a purpose by letting those gangsters shoot him and save Thao and Sue...

Vang Paois old now, and who knows how much life he has in him.
So, even if he is risking his life, he is doing it for a final purpose- maybe save his Hmong people in Laos right now (or the ones in Thailand prison camps)
If you have been keeping up to date with the Hmong refugees in the prison camps in Thailand, maybe you will see a tie in the two incidents.

-His son has been living in Laos for 2-3 years now. He has built a house there.

GVP is getting older and his son is stupid and he gets his dad involved in a no solution.
Cha talked to the wife of Khamtai Siphandon who served as Lao President from February 24, 1998 until June 8, 2006. Just a wife, just a woman who claims as representative for all the women in Laos. She doesn't hold official position of the past or present Lao government. This is a very dump-dump deal that has been contacted and implemented by his son, Cha Vang.
It doesn't matter, I would consider Cha ia very uneducated even he has been living here in the US for over 30 more years. He is someone we have to be careful and watch out since he does not know what he is playing the game!!!
On the other hand, GVP just got out of trouble and starts earning his reputation back but he gets his son ruing his reputation again. It is sad to see how thing is happening to him.

Thank goodness, i didn't agree to this plan at all.
in my opinion I think that GVP going back to Laos is the most dumbess thing ever! he's asking for a death wish...good thing it has been cancle plus I think that the parties that they held for GVP during Fresno New year was pretty stupid too. It's suppose to be a conference meeting among the Hmong community and GVP but people had to pay to get in and buy a table for like over 100 dollars? isn't it a conference to better the Hmong community? why do we have to pay money to go to a meeting? when my parents first heard about the meetings during Fresno New Year they were very interested because it would be a time where we can all meet and give out our ideas but when they heard that you had to actually pay to get in my dad was lie "WTH" so he ended up not going. I mean it would make more sense if it was a donation thing but to say that you have to pay money to be a part of it? no that's ok.
