Synopsis

A racist Korean War veteran living in a crime-ridden Detroit neighborhood is forced to confront his own lingering prejudice when a troubled Hmong teen from his neighborhood attempts to steal his prized Gran Torino. Decades after the Korean War has ended, ageing veteran Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) is still haunted by the horrors he witnessed on the battlefield. The two objects that matter most to Kowalski in life are the classic Gran Torino that represents his happier days working in a Ford assembly plant, and the M-1 rifle that saved his life countless times during combat. When Kowalski's teenage neighbor (Bee Vang) attempts to steal his Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation rite, the old man manages to catch the aspiring thief at the business end of his well-maintained semi-automatic rifle. Later, due to the pride of the Asian group, the boy is forced to return to Kowalski's house and perform an act of penance. Despite the fact that Kowalski wants nothing to do with the young troublemaker, he realizes that the quickest way out of the situation is to simply cooperate. In an effort to set the teen on the right path in life and toughen him up, the reluctant vet sets him up with an old crony who now works in construction. In the process, Kowalski discovers that the only way to lay his many painful memories to rest is to finally face his own blinding prejudice head-on. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

***UPDATE*** here is my overview::

Wow...there were more white that came to watch Gran Torino than the Hmong...I'm worried! HELP...where's is all the Hmong people when needed??? this is why us HUMONG sound so funny to the americans....cause we don't even care about supporting our own people.

I love this movie...its funny but dearly sad at the end...Walt did a wonderful job setting up those Hmong gangster. I'm glad he so helpful to Sue and Tao or else who knows...Sue could be in torture for life and Walt's right Tao and Sue will never lived in peace as long as those Gangs are out. Walt, although so old and grumpy but very strong himself...love him gotta support him all the way. Sue, she did a great job portraying her role. I love her isn't she's too CUTE??? yeah really she is way cute. Tao is adorable and what a girly but deep inside of him there is another picture. The other side of him is a lot more mature and stronger as if he could almost B***Ch slap that cousin "SPIDER" of his. HA!!!

Overall, i give this MOVIE a 4/5...no let me just add one for point, what about 5/5 since at the end Walk left Tao his Gran Torino. Yeah..i love that ending part where the judges reading the letter Walt left behind...the family must be really confuse and jealous over Tao.

Man...god bless Sue and Tao....both of them done a awesome job portraying their own self. Hope they can achieve whatever they wan to and get offer alot more roles in the American movie....Go HOLLYWOOD!

I saw the movie already and I love it but I think I might want to go watch it again if some of my friends and family are going to watch this. Yep, Ahney is very cute and I like her in the movie.

I disagree...as much as I support our Hmong people and follow traditions and beliefs as well as believe in getting our voices and concerns heard....

Gran Torino is the Hmong's first movie and its about gangs, the largest issue and most negative image in our hmong community representing us??? NOT COOL, because it further disperses stereotypes about the Hmong people to the American society, especially most of whom have never even heard of the Hmong people before or don't understand why we are here! It's like yeah, Hmong people have gotten into Hollywood, but only for creating negative impressions... This is NOT GOOD for us... no no no no... i beg to differ...

I saw it already and wasn't all that impressed...i only give it a 2 out of 5...and watching it online once was good enough for me... I feel that some Hmong people are just saying its the best movie ever or that it's all this and that, just because Hmong people are in the movie... in retrospect, this movie is bound to have unintended effects and opinions about the hmong culture---something that was overlooked!

Clint Eastwood is great in this movie, but in my opinion there is still room for improvement on the young cast. For most Hmong actors, it's their first time on screen, but I think the protrayal of the characters could have been more in depth. I like it because you can really feel the connection between the characters, but sometimes I just think it's too overdone and not realistic enough.

I agree that though it is a break through for Hmongs on the big screen, it isn't the best impressions of who they are. I understand that Gangbanging and all that stuff are true in every ethnicity, but I would have been more prouder if they used a different conflict to portray this debut. Anyways, I think this is a great success, and hope there will be more breakthroughs in the future.
