Summary
Heartbroken and saddened after his girlfriend of two years left him without a goodbye, Nadech takes a break from work and travels to Paris, France to relax his body, soul, and mind. There, he meets Taew, a beautiful and cheerful tourist guide. The two accidentally spend the night together causing their life to turn upside down afterwards. Pope, Taew’s boyfriend, finds out about the incident and breaks up with Taew. Taew blames Nadech, who is very sorry and willing to take responsibility because he has fallen for her already. At the same time, Taew finds out that Pope had cheated on her with a woman named Mint, who turns out to be Nadech’s ex girlfriend…
“…we should just break up…admit it, we never have time for each other…”
“If I’ve done something wrong, I’m sorry…”
“…it’s not that…”
“But I love you…”
Nadech suddenly awakened to a slight pain on his arm. He gently messaged it and looked over at the passenger next to him, who was smiling shyly. She had accidentally punched him in the arm while shuffling in her huge bag.
“Sorry,” she said.
“Mai bpen rai krub,” replied Nadech. “Are we landing now?”
“Ka,” replied the young woman.
Nadech could feel the aircraft slowing down now. Finally, it came to a halt. They had made it to Paris, the City of Lights.
“Ow!”
Nadech turned around and realized that he had bumped into a complete stranger. Actually, it was the same young woman who had sat next to him on the plane.
“Oh, it’s you again,” she said.
Her voice was kind of croaky.
“Sorry,” said Nadech quickly.
“It’s alright,” she said.
They both picked up their bags and continued their separate ways.
After checking into his hotel room, Nadech gently tossed his luggage onto the bed and put his hands on his hips. He took a deep breath and begin to unpack. When he finally fully unzipped to reveal the contents inside, he was shocked to see that the luggage wasn’t his. A perfect way to start off his vacation.
“Huy!”
Taew threw the pair of navy blue boxers back into the luggage and shut it. She was taken aback at all the men’s clothing inside.
“How disgusting,” she said to herself. “No, no. This can’t be right.”
She shut her eyes and shook her head.
“I’m just seeing things,” she said.
She sighed heavily and opened up the luggage again.
“YEE!” she exclaimed, picking up that same pair of boxers and with a disgusted look on her face.
She tossed it back into the luggage, zipped it back, and kicked it with a bang.
“Lovely bra,” said Nadech, to himself, picking up the cheetah printed size B bra with two fingers.
“It must belong to that woman,” he said.
He carefully placed the bra back into the luggage and zipped it back. Then, he searched for a name tag.
“There must be one somewhere,” said Nadech. “Aha!”
The name tag was sewn onto the back of the luggage.
“Taew Nattaporn,” read Nadech. “What a cute name.”
He reached into his pocket for his phone and dialed the number below the name.
“Hello krub,” said Nadech, politely. “I think we’ve got our luggages switched up at the airport.”
“Oh so it was you!” said Taew loudly on the other line. “Give me back my stuffs now or I will report you.”
“Jai yen khun,” said Nadech. “I think we should meet somewhere and exchange our luggages back.”
“Where?” asked Taew.
“Umm…where do you live?” asked Nadech. “I’ll take the luggage to your place so you don’t have to come out. More convenient for you.”
“What?!” exclaimed Taew. “No way! I’m not giving you my address! I don’t give my personal information to strangers!”
Nadech shook his head and sat on his bed.
“Well, do you want to bring my luggage here?” asked Nadech. “You can come to my place then.”
“That’s even worse!” bellowed Taew. “I don’t trust you! What if you…
“I won’t rape you na,” said Nadech. “If you don’t like my suggestions then why don’t you suggest something.”
“Hmm…I think we should just meet up somewhere,” said Taew, in a calmer tone. “Perhaps, in front of the Louvre. Is that convenient for you?”
“Krub,” replied Nadech. “See you in about an hour.”
“Okay,” said Taew.
She couldn’t believe her luck. Her previous trips to France had never been a problem. In fact, her previous trips around the world were problem free.
“Suay jing jing,” muttered Taew under her breath.
Nadech arrived at the Louvre first. Since there were so many people around and all the benches were occupied, Nadech set the luggage down in an upright position and made himself a seat. Finally, Taew arrived…with an angry look on her face. Nadech stood up at once at the sight of her.
“How could you just sit on my luggage like that?!” she asked angrily.
“I’m sorry but I couldn’t just stand here dumbly,” replied Nadech. “All the seats and benches around are taken.”
“You still shouldn’t be sitting on my luggage like that!” exclaimed Taew. “Do you know how much my luggage costs?”
“Of course I do because I have the same one as yours,” replied Nadech. “Otherwise, it wouldn’t be accidentally swapped so easily like that.”
“Alright, whatever,” said Taew. “Here’s yours now hopefully, we don’t run into each other again.”
“Diew khun,” said Nadech, as she turned around to leave. “I apologize for being so careless.”
Taew nodded to show that she understood.
“Mai bpen rai,” she said. “Just be careful next time.”
“Krub,” said Nadech. “As an apology, why don’t I treat you to dinner?”
“Mai tong,” said Taew. “Thanks for your kindness but I don’t go out with strangers.”
“Fine,” said Nadech.
She disappeared among a crowd of tourists.
After getting his luggage back, Nadech showered and changed into more formal clothes. He was planning to go out and enjoy nightlife in Paris. Perhaps, it would take his mind off things and relieve his immediate stress.
Paris isn’t just known as the City of Lights but it is also supposed to be a bustling, romantic city. Wherever he went, Nadech couldn’t help but notice that people he surpassed walked arm in arm with their loved one. He, on the contrary, had no one.
Nadech had just broken up with his girlfriend of two years. Actually, Mint was the one who had dumped him. It was unexpected and sadly, he couldn’t forget it. He really loved her and thought that she loved him wholeheartedly too but turns out, he was wrong. She left without even saying goodbye. He hadn’t seen her for two months now and he had never felt so lonely in his life.
As suggested by his best friends, Air and Got, Nadech took this vacation to relieve his mind.
“Trust me, you’ll feel a whole lot better,” said Got, confidently. “That one time when I quarreled with Air, I went out of the country for awhile and it definitely suppressed my anger, sadness, and stress altogether.”
“Got is right,” added Air. “You really need a break from reality anyway. You need a break from work. You need some time for yourself.”
Hopefully, this would work, thought Nadech.
“Une sandwich de jambon avec la soupe et la salade.”
Nadech looked up and realized that his order had just arrived. A young French guy placed the food on the table and told Nadech to enjoy.
“Merci,” said Nadech.
Here he was sitting all alone at a small table for two at a café near the la Tour Eiffel. Nadech looked at the food before him and before he could even pick up his fork, someone had just backed into him. He turned around and huge backpack was in his face.
“Excuse moi,” said Nadech, politely.
The stranger turned around but it was no stranger. It was Taew again.
“You again?” she asked.
Nadech was surprised. Had she been following him all this time?
“Don’t look at me like that,” snapped Taew. “I haven’t been following you if that’s what you’re thinking.”
Nadech grunted and turned back around.
“Nee, honestly, are you stalking me or something?” asked Taew, seating herself at the table with him in the opposite chair.
“I think it’s the other way around,” said Nadech.
She mimicked a puking expression and stuck out her tongue at him.
“Lhong tua aeng,” said Taew. “What are you doing here all alone anyway? Your girlfriend dumped you?”
This woman! How could she read him straight through like that?
“Well, what do you say?” asked Taew.
She made a face and got up.
“If you don’t want to answer, that’s fine,” said Taew. “I was just randomly asking anyway.”
She shook her head.
“I need to go make merits because it seems like bad luck is following me everywhere,” said Taew.
Nadech knew that she was referring to him.
“I can’t believe I crossed paths with you three times in a single day,” she went on. “Hopefully this will be our last encounter.”
“Nee khun, are you done talking yet?” asked Nadech. “If so, please leave me alone so I can eat in peace.”
Taew smirked and cracked a smile.
“You’re just alone because your girlfriend dumped you,” she said.
“How do you know that?” asked Nadech.
“Oh please,” said Taew. “Do you think I’m dumb? Actually, anyone can guess it. Just by that sad look on your face, anybody would know you’re heartbroken.”
Nadech was silent. Smart girl but annoying.
“Well, is it true?” asked Taew.
“None of your business,” replied Nadech.
He didn’t have the appetite to eat anymore. He got up from his chair and searched for his wallet to pay for his untouched food. Where was it? He must’ve forgotten it in his room. Damn!
“No money?” asked Taew.
Nadech ignored her and turned to the young man at the register.
“Excuse moi, je suis desole mais…
“Here.”
Taew handed Nadech a few billfolds.
“Arai?” asked Nadech.
“I pity you,” said Taew. “I guess I’ll start off making merits with you then.”
“I don’t need you to pity me,” said Nadech. “I can take care of myself.”
“I’m trying to be nice,” said Taew. “Are you going to accept it or not?”
The young man at the register seemed annoyed.
“Gaw dai,” said Nadech. “I’ll pay you back.”
“Mai tong,” said Taew.
They left the café together without saying another word.
“Let me ask you something,” begin Taew, while they crossed the street down to Champs Elysees. “Are you visiting a friend here or…
“I’m just on vacation,” said Nadech, before she could finish asking her question.
“You’re on vacation all by yourself?” asked Taew.
“Chai,” replied Nadech.
She let out a small laughter.
“That’s unbelievable,” she said. “No one go on vacations alone.”
“Yeah, well I do,” said Nadech. “I needed some personal time alone.”
“Honestly, what’s wrong with you?” asked Taew. “You don’t seem very friendly.”
Nadech shrugged and shook his head.
“That’s just the way I am,” he replied.
“Well have you been in Paris before?” asked Taew.
“No.”
“How long are you staying?”
“A month.”
“Really?! Me too!”
“Why are you here?”
“I needed some me time too.”
“Are you heartbroken?”
“No but my boyfriend and I are just taking a break from each other.”
“Oh.”
“Let’s not talk about this.”
She suddenly stopped in her tracks and thought for a moment.
“Why did you stop?” asked Nadech.
“What are you doing tomorrow?” asked Taew.
“I don’t know,” replied Nadech. “Why?”
“Do you want to go on a sightsee of the city?” asked Taew.
“Are you asking me to go with you?”
Nadech was a bit surprised because after having started off on the wrong foot with this woman, she asks him out?
“Well duh,” said Taew. “You don’t trust me? Look, I ensure you that you will not be lost with me. I’m a tour guide.”
“Really?” asked Nadech.
She nodded.
“Okay, I’ll go with you.”
Nadech promised to meet Taew at the Eiffel Tower the next morning. It was best to start their tour of Paris from there since it is the most well known place in the city. There were many attractions and tourist hot spots in France and since they had a month, they looked forward to exploring it all.
After spending a week together, the two became more acquainted with each other. Nadech began to have this funny feeling inside of him but kept it to himself. He didn’t want her to know that he was falling for her. Besides, she already has a boyfriend.
Nadech felt comfortable and warm when he was with her. Taew was the type of woman that could put a smile on anyone’s face. Her charming personality could light up the whole world and Nadech was glad to have met her. She took his mind off Mint.
“Are you tired yet?”
Nadech was daydreaming.
“Nee, khun.”
Taew waved her hand in front of Nadech, who was staring blankly at her. He was lost in her alluring eyes.
“Khun!”
Taew had punched him in the chest.
“Ow!” exclaimed Nadech. “What was that for?”
“I was trying to get your attention,” said Taew. “Why were you staring at me like that?”
“Nothing,” Nadech lied.
Taew eyeballed him suspiciously.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” replied Nadech. “Now what did you say earlier?”
“I asked you if you were tired but now I think can guess the answer,” said Taew.
“No, I’m not tired,” replied Nadech.
“Really?” asked Taew. “You seem out of this world.”
“What do you say we do tonight?” asked Nadech, changing the subject.
“Hmm…
Taew looked up and thought for moment.
“Why don’t we go out?” suggested Nadech.
“What do you mean go out?” asked Taew. “Like…
“Like to a pub or something,” explained Nadech.
Taew made a face.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I don’t go to places like that.”
“I think it’s okay,” said Nadech. “It might be different from pubs in Thailand.”
“Hmm…gaw dai,” said Taew finally. “Perhaps I can add onto the list some good recommendations for tourists.”
Nadech smiled brightly.
