hey guys I really need some opinions for my philosophy paper.

Under what circumstances is the instigation of war justified?

I need some of your conception of moral standing: if all individuals have moral standing, what justifies the violence that armed conflict entails? what would make killing in instances of war permissible?

Actually I hate war, but I have to write about this, so its kindda hard. Thanks you :]

This is a difficult and controversial topic because everyone feels differently about war. I had to write about a topic like this before just the wording of the topic was different.

Basically I said just cause for war is nothing. There is never any justice or right reason for using force. However, it is necessary to keep peace at some extent. Although some people may believe in "no war" I'll bet those same people will agree that sometimes war is needed to keep peace. The thing about war is each side is fighting for what they believe in ... they are fighting for their own cause. NOT everyone agree's and share the same point of view and there are conflicting point of views. Like protecting our country and keeping peace is important to some of us so that would be permissible grounds on armed warfare.. While to some people they want to expand their beliefs by spreading out to other land so to them armed warfare is necessary ... so it's kind of difficult to answer the question -.-" In my opinion.

I agree with KhoonxNouxWanxJai

I dropped my philosophy class.

So here is my 2 cent... I don't know if I will be to any help. To be honest, most people would say that war is not good and it's bad but it still exist. War is so controversy that I don't even want to hear the word any more but it will always be around. There is no right or wrong answer. Without war, we wouldn't be here today. America would not have become today etc blah blah blah. So when is it justifiable - NEVER. It's an excuse to make us feel at ease/less guilty etc. because in war, a few have to die and make sacrifices for whatever reason given.

Umm to me I think war is justifiable when the lives of others are at stake. I mean I would rather kill one to save a million then lets millions die by one. But then again war does displace a lot of people and cause deaths/casualties so either way it is controversial like Fun and P'Tina mentioned.

Very interesting dissertation topic ^_^, how strange that this topic came just after that the GW Bush said recently & admitted that he wasn't prepared for the war, very easy way to say sorry though...

you can explore your subject to a wider angle/vision:

1) When going for a war is justified ?
Ex: defence of territory border, invasion of enemies, helping our "friendship" countries who are under attacked by enemies (e.g. NATO alliances) etc...

2) but we realise too that most of time, going for a war is simply motivated by ideology/belief of a leader:
Hitler during the WWII who wanted to exterminate all Jew, gays, lesbians, & so on... , G.W. Bush who wanted to find the WMD, clean the "Axis of Evil" etc... Extremists such as Al Qaeda who are ready to give their lives for their believes etc....
Where is the "moral" in all that  ? Simply maybe human weakness mind that cannot be justified, but will be always remembered as the greatest human drama of all time... (genocide, war crime, human deportation, Darfour, civil wars in Rwanda....)

3) Finally the alternative way to war :
the non-violence way by Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela ...

Good luck for ur dissertation ;)
