The Pact

Location: Mid-Summer, Mountain View High School, Faculty meeting room

Five tall men in dark suits stood up from their seats to shake hands, agreeing to a pact; a pact that could change the lives of

over 2,000 students attending North Dallas High School. The principal wears big, square shaped glasses that look like it hasn’t

been replaced in decades. He is also pale and thin, almost like an old, helpless, and homeless man. He walks up to each four

men to shake their hands, calling each their names.

“Thank you all so much for your support; Mr. Saran, Mr. Kugimiya, Mr. Kim, and Mr. Chang.”

The four men nodded their heads and smile. “No problem, Principal Foster. We are glad to help.” said Mr. Saran. “After all, it

is my father’s wish, to keep the school running. It is the only place he has left to remember my mother.”

Summer Vacation is Over

Location: Late summer, Keyana’s home

Keyana ran into the house shouting with joy. “Mom. Dad. My school is saved! My school is saved!” Her parents came into the

living room where Keyana is jumping up and down, wondering what the commotion is about. “Quiet down, Keyana. What is going on?”

Her father asks. Keyana hands the school letter to her father to read, staring him down till he finishes. Her mother looks over

her father’s shoulder to read also. Then the parents’ faces lit up with huge smiles. “Oh thank goodness. The school is saved!”

said the father “and now we do-.”

Keyana cut off her father and said “I know. Isn’t that great!”

“Yes, now we don’t have to worry about paying bus transportation to get Keyana to the other school. We can save extra money”

said the mother. The father looks at how Keyana is excited about her school and said “I was just going to say that, honey.”

Then Keyana’s best friend, Shenique busts open the door and scream with joy. Keyana joins in on the scream. “OMG. OMG. This

cannot be happening for real. Girrrl ” said Shenique. “Girl, what are you talking about? It’s happening right now” said Keyana.

Both scream some more until their mother told them to shut up and get ready for church on a Saturday morning.

The girls hurried to Keyana’s room to get dress for church as mother wanted them to. Then the mother added “Want go to a dinner

party with daddy and I next month? Your father’s boss is celebrating his big promotion and his son’s eighth birthday.”

“Is it one of those big houses in that gated community?” said Keyana. Keyana always dream about living there one day with her

family. For now, she has to share a small three bedroom home with her parents, her aunt and uncle, and their three little kids.

Plus, she knows it’s safer in there than out here where she lives. She does not like her neighborhood where gangsters roam and

do whatever they please. Her older brother is in jail because of negative influences from the neighborhood.

“Yes, that’s where it’s at.” said mother.

Keyana begins to smile. She has only been in gated neighborhood every Halloween to trick or treat with her friends. “Yeah,

sure.” Says Keyana, sounding excited to finally see what’s inside of the house.

First Day of School, Mountain View High School

Keyana and Shenique took the bus to school. They said “Hi” to everyone on the bus. Everyone knew everyone. Some students were

excited to start school and some weren’t. Keyana notices someone new sitting in the far back seat of the bus, but she couldn’t

make out the face of a new boy. She wanted to say hi ,but something tells her she shouldn’t bother him. Keyana was always the

kind to greet everyone and gets along with other people. Well, with few exceptions of course. She took a seat next to Shenique.

“Man, I thought Mountain View was gonna be done for,” said one student.

Mountain View High School was put under academic probation for five years in a row and was ordered to be shut down by the local

government due to slow academic improvement and the ongoing uncleanliness of the environment. The school somehow manage to stay

put for another year.

“Oh shut up, Mike. You know you would still be sent to another school anyway” said Shenique.

“Yeah, it’s illegal to not go to school. Unless, you want to drop out,” said Keyana.

Mike paused for a moment, thinking about the consequences of quitting. “Naw, I got one more year after this year.”

Keyana smiled. “That’s the spirit!”

Mike looks at her and starts to grin. “You know, Keyana. I like it when you smile.”

Keyana rolls her eyes. Mike has been pursuing Keyana for years, but never succeeds. Even though they knew one other since

childhood, Keyana only thought of Mike as a dear friend.

Shenique turns around from her bus seat, whispers aloud at Mike and made an ugly face, “Not a chance, loser!”

Mike whispers back, “Pssh! No guy will ever like you.” Shenique stuck out her tongue and turns toward Keyana. “So did you hear

about Yaya today?” Keyana shook her head “What?”

“She’s got a new job as a waitress. It’s a new Japanese restaurant that they open about 2 weeks ago.”

Keyana’s eyes widen. “No way. That’s awesome. I want a job, but my parents won’t let me work. They said I should focus in

school, but I really want a cruiser bike,” said Keyana, sighing.

“You’ll get it for your graduation gift,” said Shenique, who honestly does not know how to respond to Keyana’s gloom. Though

Shenique does not know how to cheer up her friend at times, she always tries to be there for Keyana whenever possible.

“Graduation gift?” Keyana laughs. “I rather get a car, but only if my parents can afford it.”

“I don’t know. Just giving an idea when,” said Shenique, laughing.

The bus stops. “We are heeere!” said Shenique.

First Day of School. Front of Mountain View High School.

The bus arrives at Mountain View High School. Keyana, Shenique, and Mike recognize their friends out front of the school by the

oak tree and join them in a conversation about a dance battle. Keyana and her friends love to dance. They won a local dance

competition this summer. Mike and Jordan are arguing who can dance better.

“Oh yeah, well I can do this,” said Jordan. Jordan starts to bust a move and impress the crowd that’s forming. Then Mike wave

his body and awed the crowd once more. Someone starts to yell out “Dance battle!” While Mike and Jordan are battling it out.

Another crowd starts to form and soon the crowd left Mike and Jordan to battle alone except for Keyana and Shenique, among

others.

Mike and the others notice a crowd forming on the other side of the oak tree and says, “Who is stealing all the spotlight?” Then

Mike, Jordan, Keyana, and others went to the crowd and saw an Asian girl dancing by using her fingers and hands.

“No way. She can tut,” said Jordan with a shocking look. Everyone else was in awe. After the Asian girl finish showing off her

moves and was getting ready to leave the crowd, Mike taps her shoulder and said,” Hey, don’t leave yet. Me and you, battle” The

girl just laughed in his face.

Mike felt threatened, “What? You scared to lose?” The crowd starts to instigate and shouted “Battle, battle!” The girl rolls her

eyes and looks around as if expecting someone. “Psh, please. You won’t stand a chance against me. If I’m going to battle, I’m

going to battle with money. $100 if you lose.”

Keyana looks at Mike and knew what he is thinking. She leans over to whisper at Mike’s ear “Don’t do it Mike. You lost your

mom’s money to poker last week. You don’t have any left.”

Mike whispers back, “Don’t worry. I’m one of the best dancers in the school. She must be a new student. She’s the one that

doesn’t know who she is up against.”

Keyana doesn’t know how else to convince him not to gamble his money away, so she budded in, “Mike doesn’t have $100 to battle,

so he is forfeiting.”

The girl laughs as well as everyone else. Mike looks at Keyana with a red face. He is embarrassed by what Keyana said. “What are

you doing, Keyana?” Keyana shot him an angry look,” Saving your ass is what I’m doing. Stop gambling your momma’s money. She’s

got bills to pay.” Keyana and Mike can hear the crowd jeering at Mike about not having money to battle.

The Asian girl walks up to Mike with an evil grin, “Well? Are you going to battle or is what your girlfriend said about you is

true?” Mike nods his head feeling a bit of shame and embarrassment.

Three Asian guys start to appear behind her. The girl turns her head slightly and said “Took you guys long enough.” The tall

Asian guy with motorcycle gloves name Barry said, “Sorry, we got lost on the way to school. Porsche is pissed right now, so

don’t ask questions.” Another Asian guy with glasses name Donny said, “Yeah, you know the whole public school thing.”

The whole crowd starts to whisper amongst themselves about the four new Asian students. They have never seen them before. The

Asian girl name Racquel began to finger tut and once again the crowd is impressed by her dance skills. Mike couldn’t believe his

eyes and knew soon enough that he is in trouble. Mike couldn’t keep up with Racquel and eventually lost a short battle. Her male

friends start to cheer silently for her except for Porsche, who looks pissed. Keyana notices Porsche isn’t happy about Racquel’s

victory and wonders what he is angry about.

“So where’s my money?” said Racquel, handing out her hand as if expecting to get paid.

Mike turns from side to side pretending to look for something, “Umm…how about another battle? This time, for 50 bucks more. So

$150..” The crowd ooed and awed. Keyana and Shenique looks at Mike with disappointment and bit of anger.

Racquel sneered at him ,”Fine by me.” Then she starts to do a flare and busts a bboy move nobody has seen before. Mike and the

crowd were in shock. They didn’t expect a girl to bboy or even thought she could bboy since all Racquel was doing was finger

tutting. Mike busted a move and awed the crowd, but Racquel duplicated his move, thus mocking him and busted out a better move.

Mike stood dumbfounded and found himself dead and lost. Racquel put out her hand. Mike shook it, but Racquel throws his hand

away and wipes her hand on her pants.

“I wasn’t going to shake your hand, loser. I want my money. Where is it?” she says, looking at Mike up and down.

Mike took a step back and forced a small laugh, “Sorry, Ill pay you tomorrow. I didn’t think you would beat me”

Racquel didn’t laugh back and didn’t think it was funny either. “You mean to tell me you bet without money and expect to win?”

Racquel looks pissed, but in actuality she does not really care for the money. She just wants to have fun. Racquel has a history

torturing gamblers with Donny. Both Racquel and Donny can smell a gambler when they encounter one. Their fathers own a few

casinos together back in Thailand and South Korea, so they deal with a lot of customers who don’t pay back their fathers’ loans.

Racquel looks at Donny and both nod their heads together as if agreeing to something.

Porsche lunges forward and punches Mike in the mouth. Mike was in shock and held his mouth. He didn’t expect that one from

someone. Keyana and Shenique rushes to Mike’s aid. “Omg, are you ok?”

Porsche pulls Keyana and Shenique aside and picked up Mike with his shirt and first look at Keyana, “Of course he’s ok. Can’t

you see?” He looks straight at Mike. They are about the same height. “So are you going to pay back my cousin or not?” Porsche

grins and waits for Mike’s reply.

Mike didn’t expect an Asian to punch him out of the blue. There aren’t very many Asians in the school. They always keep to

themselves. He always thought of them as quiet school geeks, but this one is different. Mike isn’t going to let an Asian geek

make a joke out of him in front of everyone, especially Keyana. Mike threw a punch at Porsche, but Porsche dodge it and return a

punch back at Mike. Mike’s nose starts to bleed.

The two male and female teachers appear in the dance turned fight scene. The students make way for the teachers with haste.

“What is going on here?” the male teacher asked. The female teacher attends to Mike’s aid. Mike pointed at the four new

students. “He punched me Mr. King,” said Mike, holding onto his bloody nose. He tries to keep himself from crying out, but

people can hear him sniffling. The students starts to disperse and some that are present began to whisper amongst themselves

about the four new students. Where do they come from? They all wonder.

Mr. King looks at the four new students. He has never seen them before. “Mrs. Heisig, take Mike to the nurse’s office.” Mrs.

Heisig nods her head and escorts Mike away from the scene. Mr. King points to the four new students and Keyana. “You four. Miss

Keyana. Come with me to my office.” Mr. King said. Keyana began to follow behind Mr. King, but the four students stay put.

“We’re not going anywhere.” Porsche said, crossing his arms, grinning. The students look at the four with disbelief. How could

these random Asian people disrespect an adult like it’s not hard to do. Usually, they are quiet and obedient. Mr. King and

Keyana both turn around to see the four students just standing there, expressionless like they did nothing wrong. “Who the hell

do they think they are?” thought Keyana.

Racquel is chewing gum, looking around with her elbow resting on her opposite hand. Donny holds his arms on his back, studying

the ground. Barry has his hands in his pockets, looking up at the blue sky. Each doesn’t seem to care to listen to Mr. King.

“Excuse me. I AM the assis-“

“The assistant principal, Mr. Vincent King. We know…We don’t care,” said Porsche and walks off the other direction towards the

parking lot. The other three starts to follow behind.

Mr. King’s office.

“So that’s what happened, Mr. King,” said Keyana, while seated opposite to Mr. King and his desk, explaining the scene that

happened earlier.

Mr. King taps his desk with his finger, while biting his lip. “Hmm. Those are some troubled kids. They must think they own the

school,” said Mr. King. Keyana nods her head, thinking of Porsche. “What a jerk,” muttered Keyana, clenching her fist. Another

assistant principal walks into the office. There are three assistant principals for the school to accommodate the growing number

of students. Mr. King is the youngest assistant principal of the three. He is tall, handsome, and loves to remind the student

that he is the assistant principal when students don’t follow the rules.

“Actually they do own the school. Well, their fathers do,” said Mrs. Riley. Mrs. Riley used to serve in the Navy, so it explains

the broad shoulders. She nearly looks like a man, but has long hair tied to her back. She may look scary at first, but she is

really sweet unless the student does something terribly wrong of course.

Keyana look up at Mrs. Riley from her seat and couldn’t believe her ears. “Their fathers own the school? Maybe that’s why they

didn’t close the- Omg, but that gives them no right to pick on others and do whatever they please,” thought Keyana, looking mad

and upset at the same time.

Mrs. Riley told Keyana to step outside, but Mr. King said for her to go start class and gave her an excuse note explaining the

reason for being late. As Keyana closes the door to the office, she can overhear Mrs. Riley telling Mr. King that they have to

deal with it if they want to keep their jobs.

While Keyana walks to her first class, she’s thinking quietly to herself. “So if their parents own the school and the faculty

can’t do much to stop them from terrorizing the school, then what will become of North Dallas High School? Ugh, why can’t

someone else nicer own the school? This is dumb.” Keyana thought of Porsche and what he did to Mike. She made a face. “I can’t

stand that guy. He looks like a a-” Keyana couldn’t think of anything mean to say about him. He is good looking for an Asian

guy after all. “Whatever, he’s a jerk face!” said Keyana aloud.

Second encounter

“Who’s the jerk?”

Keyana hears an unfamiliar voice of a male behind her so she quickly turns around. Keyana jumps in shock and recollects herself

as if she isn’t afraid of anything. It’s the guy that punched Mike.

“So who’s the jerk?” he grins

“Uh, you,” said Keyana with an attitude. She is positive that she’s not going to let him run her.

Porsche gives a soft laugh and sarcastically he says, “That hurts. Do you have any idea who I am?”

Keyana replies, “Yes, I do. A je-“

“No, you don’t.” Porsche walks up to Keyana and looks down a couple of inches from her. “I overheard the vice principals in the

office. You were there just a while ago. None of you know who we are.” Porsche puts his hands in his pockets and encircles

Keyana. “We will run this school as if it’s a circus. Nobody here can stop us. Anyone trying to detest us …” Porsche whispers

close to Keyana’s right ear. “… can expect our immediate withdrawal of financial support for the campus. No money. No school.”

Keyana shoves his body away from her, but with little success for Porsche has a hard body. Instead, she hurts her wrist and

holds onto it. Porsche grins again at how mad Keyana is at failing to keep a good distance from him. Keyana finds that grin

annoying to her. She wishes she can wipe the nasty grin off his face. Porsche continues, “Of course, without our support, you

will have no school. I hear how disgusting this place is. It’s crawling with 2.0 dumb asses, who can’t seem to think for

themselves. You must be one of them. I prefer to be a jerk than a bird brain like many others here.” Porsche continues to talk

about how great he is to support the school, while Keyana tunes him out.

Keyana thought to herself “What is this guy babbling about? I got his point.” Keyana grabs a banana in her pocket and starts to

unravel it while Porsche isn’t looking. “Good thing I save this banana from breakfast,” says Keyana to herself.

Porsche hears nothing, but silence from her. He wonders if Keyana is even paying attention to him, so he turns around only to

find a banana shoved in his mouth.

Keyana, still holding onto the banana in his mouth, says, “Correction, you and your friends don’t own this school. Your parents

own this school. You all are just their children who got sent to this school because you all are the “real bird brains” who

can’t make it in boarding school.” Keyana stuffs the banana deep in his mouth that Porsche began to choke and fall weak on his

knees. Keyana lets go. “Ha, that’s what you get.” Keyana watches Porsche spitting out the banana, struggling to breathe. She

examines closely and says, “I didn’t realize before, but you have such a big nose.” She laughs at him and stops to see him

holding onto his throat with his face turning red. Porsche opens his mouth, but she couldn’t make out the words. Her eyes widen

in horror. Few second later, all she could hear him say is “Allergic.” Keyana puts her hand on her mouth.

“Oh my gosh, you’re allergic to bananas?!” says Keyana and rush to pick him up from the ground. Then an old man appears in the

hallway. When the old man nears the two, he says “Master Porsche. What has happened to you?” Then he sees portions of a banana

on the floor beside him and looks at Keyana.

Keyana asks him “Master? Well, is your master allergic to bananas?”

The old man nods his head. “Yes, he is severely allergic to bananas.” He seems calm about the situation.

“Oh crap. Oh crap. I’m screwed,” Keyana thought to herself. “We have to take him to the hospital” She says and the old man
dials for the ambulance. Keyana carries Porsche to the front of the school. The old man helps Keyana with carrying Porsche. “You
are coming with us,” said the old man.

“What? Me?”

“Yes, you”

“But I have school.”

“I know you are responsible for Porsche’s allergic reaction. Plus, I don’t speak much English. You’ll have to help me.”

“So Porsche is his name. I never heard of that one before,” Keyana thought and reluctantly agree to go to the hospital. “It is

sorta my fault after all, “says Keyana, feeling sorry for what she’s done. Wow, this is the most dramatic first day of school

experience I ever had in my life, thought Keyana, while setting Porsche down with his head on her shoulder and sitting next to him.

Porsche began to cough and fall asleep. Keyana, still holding onto Porsche, shook him to wake up.

“Please wake up.” She says. Porsche began to open his eyes slightly and look up at Keyana. He starts to smile at her, unlike his

nasty grin before. It’s a sweet smile. Keyana notices him smiling at her and she smiles back. “Good, you’re awake. Stay like
that, please. Just hang on, ok?”

Porsche gives a light nod and took Keyana’s hand and hold it tightly, saying, “Mah krup. Chun kau tote. Mah. Mah .” Keyana is
taken aback by him holding onto her hand. She feels a little uncomfortable and wants to let go, but his grip is too tight. She

turns to the old man. “I think he is calling out for his mom.”

“Yes, he is.”

Gosh, he is such a baby. He needs to grow up first before he can run a school, thought Keyana.

Ten minutes later, the ambulance with the loud siren arrives and the whole school is looking out the window to see the

commotion. Shenique yells out from the window, “Keyana, what are you doing?”

Keyana looks up at the windows to search for Shenique. “I’m taking this Pinocchio to the hospital. I’ll be back. Don’t worry”

The hospital

Porsche and the old man, by the name of Pethra, from earlier are speaking Thai to one another.

“I swear I saw her… You know. My mother,” said Porsche from his hospital bed, smiling.

“Yes, you did. How do you feel master?” said Pethra, feeling relief, but stayed calm about Porsche’s well-being.

“After seeing her, never better,” said Porsche and noticed the girl who poisoned him at school. His lips curl into anger and his
tone of voice changes. “What is she doing here?”

“She is here to take responsibility for her actions.”

“I don’t think she could even afford my bill anyway.”

Keyana look the other way, pretending that she didn’t notice them looking at her. Keyana knows they are talking about her and
wonders what language they are speaking. She’s not ignorant and figures it isn’t Chinese.

Back to English.

Porsche throws one of his pillows at Keyana, but she caught it in time. Both gave each other disgusting looks. “Hey you, aren’t

you going to pay my bill or not. If not, then leave already. My father will handle this with a lawsuit.”

“Lawsuit? Now wait a minute. I didn’t know you were allergic to bananas. That was kind of random. Either way, I am soo sorry,”
says Keyana. I’m screwed, thought Keyana. She starts to tense up and sweat. How am I going to explain this to my parents,
thought Keyana.

“You better find yourself a good lawyer then,” said Porsche with a huge grin. “You’re not getting away with trying to kill me
for free.” Porsche doesn’t really care if she can pay for his medical bill or not. He just feels like toying with her mind since

there’s nothing else to do in the hospital. He hates being at the hospital. Last time he remembered being at an infirmary was

when his mother passed away from a heart attack at age twelve.

Pethra’s cell phone rang. He answers and then hangs up soon after. “Your father transferred the money to the hospital’s

account. The bill has been paid for,” said Pethra, in Thai.

“Good. Don’t tell her anything,” said Porsche, in Thai.

“Please. Please, forgive me. I don’t want to bring any trouble to my parents. They are going through a financial burden and the
bill will contribute to the problem. Please. I’m begging you. I will do anything.” Keyana is pleading for her life and her

family. Her dad has been laid off for several months now and still couldn’t find a job. Her mother works at an electronic

warehouse, barely making enough to make end’s meet.

Porsche’s lips curl into his usual nasty grin again. Keyana swears he looks like the devil when he grins. She’s scared of what

might happen next. “Almost anything,” says Keyana in a soft voice.

“Psh. You can’t take back what you said.”

“Yes I can. I just did.”

“Fine. I’ll just let your parents know how much of a troublemaker you are.”

“Okay. Okay. Anything. What is it?”

“First, you should be my slave.”
Keyana’s eyes widens. “Uh, excuse me?”

“You heard right. Be my slave and I will forget you even poisoned me”

Keyana looks at him in disgust. “Ok, you are being delusional and offensive. I rather tell my parents.” As Keyana got her bags

and head for the door, Porsche jumps off his bed as fast as he could to keep Keyana from opening the door.

“Wait!” says Porsche, touching Keyana’s hand on the doorknob.

“What is it this time?” Keyana slips her hand from Porsche’s grasp.

“I’ll pay you.”

“Now we’re talking.”
“Minimum wage. Since you seem inexperienced with work and all.”

“I’ll stop working for you once my pay equals the bill. Got it?”

“The bill and extra money to compensate for my loss time. My time is money.”

“And how much is your time?”

“Deal or no deal? This is the best offer I have for you unless your parents have $1160 up front to my father, plus court fees.
Attorneys can be very expensive to have.”

“Alright deal.”

“Deal.”
