ACT 4
The Getaway
Towards the end of the day, Kale ran around the ward and got all of his duties done before he turns in for the night. All the patients returned to their rooms and got ready for bed. The head nurse and the assistant nurses had already gone home, while the over night nurse, Suzy just got in.
Suzy waved at all the day staff whom were on their way out. She went to the nurses station to read the charts. Every patient seemed to be good, until she got to Annie's chart. Suzy hadn't met her yet, since she was off for the past two nights. Nurse Suzy raised her eye brows as she read Annie's chart.
Annie Rose Tinsley, age 20, Schizophrenic who suffers from hullincinations. Has an imaginary sister named, Liezel. Sedativ was given at 2PM. Haloperidol also given. Currently under retraints. Violent and verbally abusive. Annie will be re-evaluated by Dr. Reilly and Manning in the morning. *Patient needs to be given another doze of Haloeridol at 2AM*
This will be interesting, Nurse Suzy thought.
Kale walked down the halls to do a light check. He stopped at Marissa's room and poked his head in. Her eyes grew big and excited to see Kale, and so she gave him a big delighted smile.
Kale - Goodnight Marissa. Time for lights out...
Marrisa - Wait..Kale... could you read me a story? Pretty please?
She gave him the puppy eyes and begged like a little girl.
Kale - Sweetie.. I can't right now. I've still got a lot of work to do. How about tomorrow night??
Marrisa frowned, but nodded; she knew that Kale always keept his promises.
Marrisa - Promise that you'll come back tomorrow?
Marrisa looked around the room, brought the blanket up to her chin, and whispered.
Marrisa - What if they come back again?
Kale - They won't hurt you, sweetie. I promise; I'll be here early morning okay?
Marrisa - Okay.. thank you. Goodnight Kale.
Kale - Goodnight sweetie.
Kale turned out the lights and closed the door behind him, and continued down the hall to check other rooms. Mrs. Murrie was already snoring, while Mrs. Roy laid on her bed and appeared to be in her own little world; a world where Jack, her husband is alive and well. Kale walked into her room to do a quick check on Mrs. Roy.
Kale - Mrs. Roy...?
No answer.
Kale - Mrs. Roy... you have a good night okay?
Kale patted her hand softly and turned around to the door when, Mrs. roy called out.
Mrs. Roy - Jack... could you bring me a glass of water? I'm quite thirsty.
Kale sighed and reluctantly answered the old lady.
Kale - Yes, Jane. I'll be right back with your water.
Mrs. Roy - Go on... hurry it, Jack. I'm thirsty!
Kale went and fetched her a cup of water, rested it on the rolling table, switched off the lights and uttered softly as he left the room.
Goodnight, Mrs. Roy. I'm sure Jack misses you very much....
Kale shut the door behind him and glanced at room, 57. Before he headed there to check on Annie, he went to he Nurses station to let Suzy know that he's about to leave for the night.
Kale - Nurse Suzy?
Suzy - Hey Kale. You doing an all nighter with me?
She winked.
Kale - Loved to.. but tonight's my night off.
Suzy - Oh... so I'm stuck with Mark then huh?
Kale - Yep. I'm afraid so.
Suzy - Darn! Hehe
Kale - Suzy, I'm going to check on the last patient, then I'm out okay?
Suzy - Alright, Kale. Have a goodnight.
Kale then walked towards down the hall towards Annie. He was suppose to un-retrain her since she's already under a sedativ. As he got to the door, he swallowed down his anxiousness and opened the door softly. Inside, it was dimmed, but the room was lit up by the shining of the moon. The blinds were still drawn. Annie appeared to be asleep. Her hair was a mess and it covered most of her face. Kale walked in quietly and made his way to the window to shut the blinds. He also picked up the mess that was made earlier when they had to retrain her. After straightening out Annie's room, he then cautiously approached Annie.
Kale stood next to the bed and took a moment and studied the sleepimg beauty. He reached his hand toward her face to wipe the hair away, but he stopped himself. She has a tough exterior, but yet, he knew that she's so fragile, trapped in this place. Perhaps, trapped in the darkness of her mind. Kale watched her chest rise and fall as she slept. He then gently undid the retraints and pulled the blanket over her body to cover her from the coldness of the empty room.
Goodnight, Annie.. tomorrow will be a better day....
Kale left the room and closed the door behind him.

As soon as as the door was closed, Annie opened her eyes. She quickly uncovered herself and jumped out of bed and took off the hospital gown and dressed in the black pants and black hooded jacket that she wore here. When she was first brought here, she remembered that next to the iron gates was the woods. It was thick with tall trees and shrubs, but she had to take that chance. This is her only hope. Annie looked out the window and spotted a car that just left the property.
As she turned around to look for her tennies shoes, Liezel startled her.
Liezel - What do you think you're doing?
Annie - What's it look like I'm doing? I'm getting us out of here!
Liezel - Silly girl.. and how are you going to do that??
Annie - Well.. remember our car ride here? .... I saw a clearing at that woods over there. I think that's our chance.
Liezel laughed.
Annie - Shhhhhhhh!! Do you want us to be found out?? Keep quiet.
Liezel - What if your plan doesn't work?
Annie - Trust me.. it will work. I took girl's scout before, remember??
Liezel - Suit yourself, silly girl.
Annie got her shoes on and slowly inched towards the door, cracked it open softly, and poked her head out. She spotted Mark all the way down the hall in the staff's lounge. He was sitting in front of the TV, but it doesn't appear like he was watching it, but instead it looked like he was dozing off. A great opportunity for Annie's escape. And then she glanced over at the nurse's station and it looked like Suzy was busy filing some documents. On the opposite side of the hall away from the ward, there was an emergency exit. Annie thought, she'd try that door.
Annie - Are you coming or what?
Liezel - Yes...
Liezel and Annie left the room and crept quickly toward the exit. When they got to the emergency exit, they were surprised to see a another door in that area.
Annie - I think we should try this door instead, incase the emergency exit alarms.
Liezel - Suit yourself.
Annie and Lizel went through the mystery door. They entered a dark and stuffy hallway. There were boxes and old tables and things on each corner of the hall. It was like a maze, as if there was something scary up ahead. But the girls ignored their surroundings and desperately went down the hall. A few minutes into it, there was a door up ahead. As they got to the door, Annie closed her eyes and hoped and prayed that freedom was on the other side. When she turned the handle, she was happy to find it unlocked. And to her surprise, it opened to the dark back side of the hospital. This turned out to be a docking door, where supplies were brought in.
Annie - Liezel, we're free!
The two girls then ran toward the woods.

Kale had left the hospital about 10 minutes ago and was driving along the empty wooded foggy road when his old car started to make a loud noise. It sounded as if it was huffing and buffing.
Oh please, No. Not again! I thought, I already gave you an oil change and got you looked at. Please, please.. not right now.
But just as suspected, his car slowed down as it got ready to die on Kale.
God damn it!! Not here!!
No amount of pleading helped. Kale's car came to a halt.
Shit!!! He hit the dashboard and sighed. He grabbed a small flashlight, opened the door, and got out into the dark night. The fog was getting thicker and the cold air brushed against his neck as he opened the hood of the car to try and get it to work again.
