Lanna [17] grew up with her step father who has been sexually abusing her for the past 4 years. Recently, she found out that she got pregnant. She told her stepfather who told to abort the child. He tells her who is going to feed that bastard child. That night, the stepfather got into her bed and wanted to get some. Lanna still mad from earlier decline and rejected him. This angered the stepfather who started to hit Lanna. He yelled at Lanna calling her names and trying to hit her stomach. Lanna cuddled into a fetus position to protect her unborn baby. Once the beating was over, the two went to sleep. Later that night, Lanna pretended to have stomach pain, claiming she was having a miscarry. The stepfather didnt bother and continued to sleep. Lanna quickly made her way out of the house and ran far away...
Kobori [26] , an imperial Japanese navy officer, who married his wife *the princess* 2 weeks before the war started. Kobori is in Thailand because he of his wife father *emperor of japan* and is a well known respected man in the Navy. His marriage was an arranged marriage and is estrange to his wife.
Lanna has been away from home for the past 2 days and it was her first time ever. She hasnt eaten since. Luckily she approached the local street market and decided to take a peek, perhaps bargaining for more.. Lanna could not help but drool as she slowly walked by the many laid out fruits and vegetables. Her stomach growled and she knew her baby was hungry and so was she. Lanna had no choice but to snatch one of the mangos and hope that she was fast enough to run away from them. Just as she reached her hand out, a man quickly grabbed a hold of her arm with a good grip. "What do you think youre doing?" The man asked in thai with a weird accent. Lanna looked up and noticed he was in green clothes with a green hat. With her lack knowledge of the outside world, she didnt have a clue who he was. Lanna looked back at the seller who grew suspicious of her. The seller then opened her lips and yelled out, "THIEF! THIEF! This young lady is trying to steal my stuff!" Everyone turned around and ran over to huddle around the three.
The man in green clothes pulled out his other arm and told the seller to calm down repeatedly. "Youre mistaken. She is my wife. She is just looking around ma'am."
The seller then yelled out, "Then why did she look at you unknowingly? If you two are husband and wife, why is she so poorly dressed? She is a thai woman! Do not try to defend this innocent looking lady who is cruel heart-ed!" The man in green was at the end of the road. He looked down at the poorly dressed girl with pleading eyes. "Look!" the seller yelled out. "I can see in her eyes that you are a stranger to her!"
Lanna quietly answered the lady, "I am his wife." She tried to mock his accent, trying to blend in with him. Kobori smiled in relief.
"I dont believe you!"
Kobori reached into his pocket and pulled out a lot of money and handed it to the seller. "Sorry for confusion m'am. But here, i apologize."
Immediately the seller smiled happily and assured them there was no confusion. Kobori reached for Lannas shoulder and they quietly walked away.
Part 2
Kobori brought Lanna back to the workyard where all the soldiers were simply admiring the young lady. Kobori brought her into his office and closed the door. He walked over to the table and pulled the towel away revealing the many dishes. Lannas stomach growl. Kobori tells Lanna that this is all hers but once she is done, she must answer some of his questions. He watched as she ate without stopping. Once she was done eating, they both sat down at the table. Kobori asked what was her name and why was she starving herself or whether she was running away from home. Thinking her stay here was temporary, Lanna told him a lie. She told him that her grandmother had recently passed away and they owe debt. The people want their money back but she had nothing to pay them so she ran away from home. Kobori believed her and pitied her. Lanna asked why he had a acent and he told her he is a japanese man. Lana knew the war was going on but knew little about it. Kobori told Lanna is free to stay here as long as she wants so the bad people wont be able to find her. Either way, outsiders are not allowed to come into the workyard. Lanna felt safe for once, in a very long time. But, she told him that she wont stay here too long as it may be risky. Kobori replied that he knows she is a thai woman and this is a place for the japanese men, but not to worry as these men are under his command. Lanna tells Kobori that she will leave in a few days. Kobori respects her decision and does not try to stop her.
The next day Lanna was given new clothes bought by Kobori. Lanna made her way into the cooking area and noticed the vegetables were rotting. Kobori followed her and noticed it too. He gave her some money to go buy some more vegetables and assisted two workers to go with her. Lanna and the two japanese soldiers walked into the local market with people staring at them. Lanna felt awkward and hurriedly bought her items.
A couple days went by and it was time to leave. They bid their farewells and so she left... Only to find out that people quickly recognized her as the Japaneses wife. Many of the ladies asked her where her husband was and Lanna told them they were splitting. The ladies quickly made fun of her and pointed their fingers at her. Lanna figured that a woman without a husband is considered a negative thing in the community. Lanna had no other choice but to return to the workyard. But on her way back, her stepfather caught up with her and noticed she was wearing silk clothes. He then demanded her to give him some money or else he will spell her beans. In the middle of trying to stop her from leaving, he accidentally pushed her down causing her to miscarry. Villagers heard her scream and followed where it came from. This scared the stepfather and caused him to run away from he scene. The villagers took Lanna back to the workyard and informed kobori that his wife had miscarried. Kobori is confused and asked her to tell him the truth. Feeling ashamed of her incest, Lanna tells him that her husband died in the war. Kobori once again believes her and apologized for involving her into this mess and promise to take care of her until the war is over. Once it was over, he will escort her to a different place so nobody will recognize her. Lanna agreess and decides to stay in the workyard until the war ends.
While there, Lanna and Kobori grew close. The workers at the workyard obeyed Koboris commands everyone except Num. Num is japanese soldier who is below rank compared to Kobori and tries to spoil kobori and lannas plan. Num told the villagers that Lanna is a mistress for kobori since he is already married. With much chaos in the air, Koboris father decided to wed the two to calm down the fire and to soothe the relationship between the two countries. Koboris marriage to his first wife will dismissed as a rumor as his marriage to Lanna is his real marriage. Koboris first wife acknowledges this and agrees to wait for him until the war ends. 4 Months after theyve met, Lanna and kobori are legally married, secretly, since they've already claim theyre married.
There were no other woman in the workyard besides Lanna but still the men all respected her. When she became "one of the japs" her style also changed. She was also given a new name: Hideko. She had to learn koboris custom and act like one of them. Because of this, every night when everyone falls asleep, they would stay up and give one another teaching sessions. This brought them closer making kobori forgetting all about his real wife who was still waiting for him.
One night, a question that had been bothering him since they first met, finally was asked. "How old exactly are you?"
".. I dont know." she answered
"How do you not know your age?" He asked."How old is your husband?"
"Uh, 23?"
"Ow! Then you must be around there. Maybe 22, 21."
"But as far as i can remember, ma passed away when i was 12 and then paaw and i"
"And?" Kobori asked.
"Nothing." Lanna stands up and walks away.
"Are you hiding something?" Kobori stands up and follows her. "Lanna, we've known each others for half a year. Though it may not seem much to you, it means a lot to me." *Kobori has feelings for her* "I hope you can be faithful to me and tell me. I wont tell anyone. What is your husbands name? What happened to your parents? You look so young to be in your 20s.."
Lanna turns around and has the guilty look. "I trust you the most. You're my light, my god. You saved me kobori. I will do anything, tell you anything but please not this." Lanna starts to cry.
Kobori walks over and hugs her and embraces her. "Im sorry. I will stop."
Kobori forbids Lanna to go outside of the workyard because hes afraid of her being humiliated once again. Lanna doesnt go out unless he goes with her so he can protect her. Still they havent found out who leaked the news about Lanna being his "mistress". Ever since they got married, kobori became more involved and everyone noticed he tend to be seen with a smile on his face compared to before. The workers tell Lanna and thanks her for her appearance. Lanna feels happy that she is around positive people for once in her life since her ma passed away. But she is quickly reminded that they must part once the war ends. All of a sudden the alarm goes off! Warning people to go for cover as bombs are dropped. Every time the alarm goes on, she froze up, making kobori picking her up and carrying her to safety.
***Waiting for the alarm to go offf..***
"Why does this always happen? I hate it when it happens." Lanna snuggles towards Kobori. Kobori holds on tighter.
"It'll be over soon." His chin embraces her silky hair. Like Lanna, he is reminded that war ending=no more Lanna. "Why couldnt it be postponed *referring to his marriage*?"
"What?!!" She yelled, trying to get her voice through the noises.
"Nothing."
Part 3
One afternoon as Lanna was clean Koboris office, she accidentally knocked over a pile of crunched papers along with a couple of photos. Lanna bent down and grabbed the picture and felt disgusted throughout her body. Though the picture was black and white, the message was clearly sent through. Just in time Kobori came in after finishing smoking. "What are you looking at?" he asked.
Lanna looked up and slowly got up with the picture still in her hand. "Whats this?" she asked.
"What?" he looked over and saw the picture. Kobori looks away with guilt clearly written in his eyes.
"Why? What did they do wrong to deserve this??"
Kobori clears his throat before proceeding on. Though he dares not to look at her as he talked. "Just put the pictures away."
"Why?? How can you be so cruel?"
"Hideko, what are you talking about?"
"I am not that dumb Kobori! I know these men in uniform are your men! Why do you allow such thing to happen??"
"You think i really want this to happen? I am just a man in uniform that happened to have a few men willingly obey me. This war going on is bigger than you would think. Do you think they will believe me i speak how i feel about this??"
"Its not fair! .... We are all humans! Nobody wants to die! Nobody should be pressured to end their life without their consent Kobori!"
"I know but its been done already .." He reach for her arm. She snaps back.
Lanna turns away. "I cant even look at you right now. How can you live day to day knowing this is happening?"
"What do you want me to do?.."
"Please, i want to be alone tonight."
"Though i cant do what you wanted me to do, i will accomplish this wish of yours." Kobori turn towards the door but before he opened the door, he turned around. Though he was facing her back, he whispered over and said, "Good night, my love." Lanna turned around but she was too late. He had already left.
Just as Lanna was getting ready to get into bed, the alarm started to go on again. She was in her night gown and froze! She stood still wondering whether she should run out in her gown or grab a shirt.. She couldnt make up her mind! Just in time her candle light went out! Making her room dark as night itself! Finally, Lanna had no choice but to crawl out, with or without a shirt. She slowly crawled out of the house in her night gown and was quickly reminded of Kobori! She didnt know where he was or whether he was safe!! Then she heard a familiar voice, calling out her name.. Lanna turned around and saw Kobori standing a few meters away. She knew he was running to get to her because his chest was constantly going up and down. Lanna ran into his arms and held on, digging her nails into his skin. Regardless, Kobori felt no pain and held on even tighter. "Im scared." She informed him.
"I know.. Thats why i came back for you... Im sorry.. I'll never leave you alone ever again.." Kobori safely escorted her to safety.
Once the alarm stopped, everyone went back to their place. Kobori normally slept on the floor as Lanna slept on his bed. Lanna patiently sat on the bed with her legs crossed and stare at Kobori as he was setting up his sleeping area. He noticed he grabbed one of her pillows and placed it on her bed. Lanna reached out for his hand and gently held on. Kobori looks at her since he knew very well what was about to happen. With one arm on his wrist, her other hand slowly reached for the side of his cheek and directed his face towards hers. She could hear him breathing, taking in small breathes. Lanna made the third move and reached for his lips, then moved an inch back. Kobori finally acted and kissed her back. They kissed and kissed and before they knew it, Kobori was on top of her undressing her. Once her top was off, he reached for the candle but Lanna grabbed onto his shirt holding him back. "I want to remember this." She told him. Kobori smiled and dive in.
Part 4
A couple weeks has gone by and their love for one another is still growing. Kobori and Lanna decided to go for a stroll at the local market. They dont know but they were stalked by the stepfather. Kobori and Lanna accidentally split for a couple minutes and perfectly, the stepfather approached Lanna and told her he will blackmail her if she doesnt give him money. Lanna is startled and kept mute the entire day. Kobori asks her whats wrong but her lips doesnt move. He believes that something is wrong but kept still. A couple days later Lanna found a letter under the door of her bedroom door. Lanna happily open it thinking its probably from Kobori. But as it turns out, it was from her stepfather. Lanna panics and thinks that her stepfather is probably in the workyard somewhere. In the letter, the stepfather demands to meet her at the lightning struck tree where he will be waiting for his money. Lanna freaks out and wants to tell Kobori but thinks that this will be a con to their relationship so she kept still and went alone.
Lanna went to the tree and waited. In a matter of seconds, her stepfather popped out from behind a tree and scared her.
Lanna ask him what he wants. He tells him in a calm tone that though he is just his stepfather, that he has taken care of her for the past 8 years. He slowly reach out and grab her hand and held onto it. Lanna looks at it for a few seconds and continues to listen to him. "We've had such a great time together you have to admit. All those crazy nights.." Lanna releases his hand but all sudden he grabbed onto her and held on tight. Due to this, she cant escape! Lanna struggles to get free but fails. She stops, and ask him why he is doing this.
"Because youre mine! You've been mine and i will have you back! No bitch of mine will get off my dick that easily."
"NO!" Lanna tries to fight him off of her. "Let me go!"
Her stepfather grabbed onto her chin and tilt it in the air and licked her cheek sexually. Disgusted, Lanna hits his head with the back of her head, knocking him to the ground. He moans on the floor in agony, realizing his nose was heavily bleeding. Lanna makes a run for it but decides to turn back. She walked towards him and STUMPS on his one dollar and fifty cent in revenge! "This is for all those years you've put me through hell you son of a bitch!"
Lanna happily runs back to the workyard and walked right into Koboris office. The first thing she saw was Koboris back, who was smoking as he was looking out the window. Though she couldnt see his face, just his back was enough. Lanna walked over to the table and noticed there were papers everywhere on the floor. Lanna looked over to Kobori who she could now see the side of his body. His fingers were trembling as he held onto the cigarette. His finger impatiently tap on the cigarette to release the ash. Lanna heart immediately sank.
Kobori turns around with anger written in his eyes.
"Whats wrong?" she ask
"you tell me.... You tell me who that old man out there was!"
"What are you talking about Kobori?"
"You think im stupid dont you? You think i wont find out?" He marches up to her and stops a few inches away. Lanna closed her eyes, thinking he will run right through her. He sees that she is scared and takes a step back. "Why couldnt you just tell me that you already had someone in mind?.." His heart is aching..
"Thats not it Kobori.."
"Then what is Hideko?? That he was some random stranger who helped raised you for 8 years?? What about me? Who am i to you? Who am i??" His hand hits his chest repeatedly.
Lanna thinks to herself "My husband... My one and only husband."
"Arent you going to say anything?" he ask. "Or did what i saw was right?.." He disappointingly ask.
"Yes." She clears her throat. "Youre right. Youre absolutely right.." She doesnt have the guts to look at him in the eye. "He is my lover. And you are just my temporary shell for shelter.. The baby that i had lost, was his." Koboris heart sank to the FLOOR! He drops his cig and his legs starts to wobble. "What we had, is just a dream."
Kobori starts to cry. "What about that night? When you said you wanted to remember it.. Was it all, an act?"
"Everything was." Her heart was breaking inside. But sooner or later, they would have to part. And he will have to return back to his wife. "Please dont forget, that you still have a wife whos waiting for back at home." Lanna walked towards the door but before she left, she turned around and looked at him in the eye and said, "Please take care of yourself. You must stay alive, for your wife.*SHE MEANT HER!!!*."
As soon as she closed the door, her tears burst out like a river. All the workers looked at her as she made her way out of the workyard. Some of the workers approached her and her asked her where she was going. "Isnt she suppose to leave with sir?" One asked.
She answered, "I arrived here with nothing. I will leave here with nothing."
"Is the war ending?" Another asked.
Some cheered as others wondered more about her. They watched her leave and walked out of the workyard. Once she was out of sight, they chattered of whether or not the war was finally going to end. Then Kobori approached them! "Where did she go??!!!" He asked. they all pointed to the direction that she had left in. They watched as he ran after her. They all looked at one another and ran after him.
