In novel version, Mei is strong most the time, not a fierce type but Mei is not a person easily being bullied unless it's Tian. (A bit weaker later half tho).
And things rais did in novel only incidentally bring Mei closer to Tian.
Mei is more interesting character 1st half when she chased/ actively flirted with Tian. When their role reverse, Tian is the chaser then he becomes more interesting.
