His Majesty in hospital after MRI exam

His Majesty the King underwent an MRI examination at Siriraj Hospital yesterday after complaining about weakness in his right leg, according to the Royal Household Bureau. Published on October 14, 2007

When the magnetic resonance imaging device detected slightly inadequate blood flows in the left lobe of his brain, doctors recommended His Majesty remain at the hospital for further observation.

Medicine was prescribed for eight hours and the right leg showed improvement, the bureau said in a statement released yesterday.

Her Majesty the Queen together with Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya paid the King a visit yesterday morning. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont also visited His Majesty last night.

Thousands of well-wishers flocked to Siriraj Hospital yesterday to offer their good wishes for the King's recovery. Officials of the Royal Household Bureau set out a book for people to write their messages to the King.

Paiboon Dejsane, 60, said he had learned about the King's illness from his daughter, a nurse at the hospital. He said he would visit the hospital every day while the King was there.

His Majesty the King is recuperating from an unusual weakness in the right side of the body, the Royal Household Bureau said yesterday.

His Majesty has gained more strength to his right upper forearm and the right side of his body while his blood pressure and respiratory system have returned to normal, said the statement, quoting his personal doctors at Siriraj Hospital where he is being treated.

The doctors are preparing a rehabilitation course for His Majesty. The course is expected to continue for an unknown period of time.

A large number of people in yellow shirts have surrounded the hospital to wait for good news about His Majesty's condition, with many of them staying on and returning to wait there since he was admitted on Saturday.

Hospital staff laid a long wooden platform along a sewage channel beside Chalerm Phrakiat Building, where His Majesty is staying on the 16th floor, to add extra space to accommodate more and more well-wishers.

Well-wishing messages can be signed at the Centennial Pavilion from 8am to 10pm. Along with members of the general public, many Cabinet members, career politicians and senior civilian and military officials signed their names in the books all day yesterday. A total of 8,873 people had signed messages as of last night.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Pojaman assigned her stepbrother Bannapot Damapong to deliver messages to the King.

Her Majesty the Queen paid a visit to the King at 11.15am yesterday. She was warmly greeted and hailed by the crowds in the hospital. A large number gave a wai to her at her feet while she walked past them. Her Majesty waved back at the crowds and said thanks to them.

At 2pm, His Majesty graciously had a large number of bouquets and vases of flowers presented to him distributed to patients in the Chalerm Phrakiat Building.

Phra Ratchakhru Wam Thepmuni, the chief Brahmin priest with the Royal Household Bureau, said a Hindu prayer had been said to wish His Majesty a speedy recovery.

Free parking space is available in Sanam Luang grounds and nearby Thammasat University to those wishing to visit Siriraj Hospital. Free trams shuttle between both sites and Tha Prachan pier, where the crowds can travel to the hospital on the Thon Buri side across the Chao Phya River.

His Majesty was admitted to Siriraj Hospital on Saturday for treatment over mild symptoms of inadequate blood to the left side of the brain. Doctors later diagnosed that the outer part of His Majesty's left-side brain lacked enough blood supply.

The King later underwent a MRI test, which detected slightly inadequate blood flows in the left lobe of his brain. Doctors recommended His Majesty remain at the hospital for further observation.

Doctors say His Majesty regaining his strength

His Majesty the King can now sit up in a chair and eat after regaining his strength, the Royal Household Bureau said yesterday. Published on October 16, 2007

Examination results showed the surface of His Majesty's brain slightly lacked sufficient blood volume, although his nervous system had returned to normal.

The strength in his right leg, right upper and lower forearm had increased to almost normal, the latest statement said.

"His Majesty is now in good spirits," it said.

The statement was the third since the King was admitted to Siriraj Hospital on Saturday.

His Majesty Ismail Petra ibni Almarhum Al-Sultan Yahya Petra and his wife Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Perempuan Tengku Anis Binti Tengku Abdul Hamid, of Malaysia's Kelantan state, had their aide present a vase of flowers and a personal statement to the King to wish him a speedy recovery.

US Ambassador Ralph Boyce also signed a message at the hospital, along with a large number of people, including politicians and Buddhist monks who queued up all day to sign messages wishing His Majesty a quick recovery.

A slight commotion occurred yesterday after crowds cheered several celebrities who came to the hospital to write messages and get in photos with fans of the King.

Some paid respect at the statue of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkhla - the King's father - within the hospital compound.

Many people said they were very relieved to hear the latest news from the Royal Household Bureau.

Saowanee Preuksathisari-korn, 68, from Ayutthaya, said she was astonished to learn about His Majesty's illness so she and 100 senior citizens from Ayutthaya came to the hospital to present flowers and write messages of support. After the statement was announced, she felt much better and very happy. She said she hoped His Majesty would recover soon.

Another well-wisher from Nakhon Ratchasima, Silpa Upimai, 52, said she felt happy His Majesty was recovering and thanked Siriraj Hospital doctors and nurses for taking good care of the monarch.

Silpa said this was the first day she had signed a message and would continue to come to the hospital to wish His Majesty a quick recovery.
