Laos urges suspension of a Thai soap opera

Laos has urged Thai television channel 7 to suspend airing a soap opera, the first episode of which will on air tonight, because the Vientiane government deemed the love story a threat to Lao culture.

Vientiane has conveyed their concerns to the television executives through the Thai Foreign Ministry last week that the soap opera "Pleng Rak Song Fang Kong" (Love Song on the Bank of Mekong) contained many scenes deemed inappropriate and contradicting to Lao culture, said Lao foreign ministry's spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy.

"Laos Ministry of Information and Culture has seen the sample of the series and considered it could damage Lao norm and traditional culture," Yong said in a phone interview.

At the centre of dispute is the role played by the LaoBulgarian actress Alexandra Bounxuay, the romance series is the love story between a Thai and Lao young couple. To the Lao authorities, Champa, the lead character played by Alexandra, was deemed a bastard child as her mother was married to no man.

"It's against Lao culture to have a child without marriage," said an official at the Lao Embassy in Bangkok.

"Well, Thais might be okay with it but not for Laos," he said.

Champa is a tourist guide who developed a romantic relation with a Thai boyfriend. The pace of their relation was quick to hold on to her catch.

"It's misleading that Lao woman is such an easy woman," he added.

Dialogue in the series is also a dialect of no Lao community as many Thai stars including Sukolwat Kanaros are unable to speak Lao properly and fluently, he said.

"So if you cannot speak Lao, you shouldn't pretend you can and speak such an ugly accent of the language," the official said.

Another scene considered a humiliation to Laos is when Champa threw a white frangipani flower—which is national flower of Laos—into a dustbin.

"You might get angry with your boyfriend who hand you the flower but the national flower should not be thrown away in that manner," he said.

"Why didn't the producer use rose or the other kind, rather than our national flower?" he asked.

Producer Thongchai Prasongsanti from Workpoint Entertainment and Ch7 executives agreed to halt the series after a long meeting with Lao officials at the Lao embassy on Monday and would work with Vientiane to adjust the soap opera.

Thai television has heavy influent over Lao audience as people on the other side of the Mekong River could access to Thai network and enjoy all series.

Clashes on cultures between the two neighbours who share a lot of similarity was always seen in the media. The recent one was last year as Laos angry over a Thai comic movie Makteh (soccer), which portrayed Lao national soccer team in a jokingly manner.

omg ok now i really believe this is retarded and stupid.

one, there are people in laos that are pregnant without a daddy. it happens everywhere, true, they don't promote it, but people doesn't stop having sex because it's not good to have a kid without a daddy.

two, speaking laos with a different accent and not "fluent" doens't mean you're not lao. they are just being a pain up in the rear because they don't want thai people to pull popularity towards them... laos wants to represent themselves rather have thai represent them for them.

three, throwing the national flower into a dustbin. ok it's the national flower, but it's just a flower, why would people concentrate into the little details of that. the reasoning why they didn't use a rose is probably because that isn't a laos flower. they need the lakorn to be as realistic to represent laos. additionally, i think if they were to use a rose, they'll probably say, why are they using a rose, it doesn't even signify laos, and so the story goes on. and the flower, i'm pretty sure people don't worship it as much as it sounds on this news article. people probably step on it on the streets. why aren't they doing something about that?

i just simply think that the government is just being a pain in the ass because they don't want thais representing laos, they'd rather do it on their own...so they will find every in which way possible to bring up some stupid suggestions. -_-

Oh no wonder they decided to air Cee's lakorn with Bee Matika.

Hmm...i don't know what to say because Laos has its reasons and true Thailand does have its problems which tend to influence others. But then again it's an individual's choice to make these decisions. I guess it all goes with the idea of censorship and at the moment Laos is trying to maintain traditional standards however, doesn't a lakorn have some sort of lesson/ideaology/principles/morality issues and what not??

I don't see the reason for the suspension because Thailand also censors certain aspects of lakorns that are not suitable for the public to be influenced by.

Lao govt knocks Thai soap off the air

Channel 7 television and Workpoint Entertainment yesterday gave in under pressure from the Lao government and suspended indefinitely the airing of a controversial soap opera that was scheduled to make its debut last night.

Channel 7 executive Surang Prempree tried to play down the controversy at a press conference by saying some of the dispute was centred on "technical problems", but she admitted "sensitivity matters" were also involved.

Surang said she would not raise any objections in public and that it was not necessary for Channel 7, or Workpoint Entertainment - the producer of the soap opera - to go into detail about any possible disagreement.

"We cannot say for now when the soap opera will be aired," said Surang. "We give importance to people's feeling. We understand that Lao tradition and culture are different from ours. Let's make this a case study," she added.

At the centre of the dispute is the programme "Phleng Rak Song Fang Kong" (Love Song on the Banks of the Mekong), a love story between a young Thai and Lao couple.

Lao-Bulgarian actress Alexan-dra Bounxouay plays the beautiful Champa.

But Lao authorities were not comfortable with the fact that Champa was an "illegitimate child" in the series, as her mother had no husband.

Vientiane conveyed their concerns to the television executives through the Thai Foreign Ministry last week that the soap opera contained many scenes deemed inappropriate and contradictory to Lao culture, said Lao Foreign Ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy.

"The Lao Ministry of Informa-tion and Culture has seen a sample of the series and believes it could damage to Lao norms and traditional culture," Yong said in a telephone interview.

"It's against Lao culture to have a child outside of marriage," added an official at the Lao Embassy in Bangkok. "Thais might be okay with it, but not Lao."

Champa plays a tourist guide who becomes romantically involved with a young Thai man. The relationship develops quickly. Appa-rently, a little too quickly. "It's misleading that a Lao woman could be such an easy woman," he said.

The dialogue used in the series is also a dialect that no Lao community uses, as many Thai stars, including Sukolwat Kanaros, are unable to speak Lao properly and fluently, he said.

"So if you cannot speak Lao, you shouldn't pretend you can and then speak in such an ugly accent," said the official.

Another scene considered humiliating to Laos occurs when Champa throws a white frangipani - the national flower of Laos - into a dustbin.

"You might get angry with your boyfriend who hands you the flower, but the national flower should not be thrown away in that manner," he said.

"Why didn't the producer use a rose or something else, rather than our national flower?" he asked.

At yesterday's press conference, the director of the soap opera, Thongchai Prasongsanti, declined to speak to reporters.

Thai television has a considerable influence over Lao audiences, because people on the other side of the Mekong River can easily access Thai networks and enjoy most of the programmes.

However, culture clashes between the two neighbours, who share many similarities, are always popping up in the media. The most recent was last year, when Laos was angry over the Thai comedy film "Makteh" ("Soccer"), which portrayed the Lao national soccer team in a joking manner.

lol gosh... hahah so i had some more info on the girl who plays in this lakorn

it might all be because of her, this is why they are starting to make excuses to not let the thais air this lakorn.

my mom and aunt was talking about alexandra and they said she said somewhere, publicly, "if i wasn't born in laos but rather in thailand, i would be much more famous than this"

which is possibly why the laos government is getting up in her lakorn business and not willing to let them air it.

yeah there are many people who isn't married and has a child together... and additionally, if girls aren't "easy" why are they being married to elder men from foreign countries so easily. <_<

lol and the second article is the same as the first... lol :p

When she said that. She's a total sell-out. No disrespect to anyone who like her.

I might not agree with what the Lao govt is doing but I think they have their reasons.

I thought it was just a Thai reporter that is making the rumors up?

Someone drop me the bomb.

This was just a rumor. They did a whole segment about this particular situation on ThaiTv about a year ago and how rumors can easy be spread and be made throughout in Laos and Thailand's Media and how Lao people in Lao can easy become influenced. They also interview Alexandra and her family. There has been no proof or record indicating of her saying this.

Alexandra works for the government of Laos such as singing at concerts at Lao embassy throught the world. She represent Laos in ASEAN meetings throughout Asia. and etc. Her sucess today is because of Lao people. They are posters and billboards of her all over Vientiane City.

My Opionion:

I also think that if this was not a rumor it might have been a publicity stunt, which worked. because people seem to know more about her rumor than about Alexandra herself. which is sad. Alexandra is a very very talented person. Represents Laos and Lao people to the fullest. She speaks Lao at all her Thai invterview Shows, she wears the tradition Lao sin to all her 4 Thai TV shows.

If you take a moment to think about it, you will understand where the government is coming from! The national flower (dok champa) is very respected among Lao people (similar to Thai respected their king). There might be people in Laos that may be pregnant without a husband, but that is not lao people. It might be okay in Thai society or in Thailand; but not in Lao and you will hardly see girls get pregnant without a husband. You could only imagine how Thai would portray Lao people.

Anywho, it is ashame that this lakorn will not be airing in Laos, but at least hopefully it will be airing in Thailand. Looking forward to see!

We have to take a moment to look at other-side perspective as well not just the democratic society prespective.

Laos goverment is the most brainless and uneducated people out there. Thats why my parents left laos they didnt want to be ruled by someone who are stupid. They ban the soccer movie now this. Thailand help them out with alot stuff aready. and even the sea games 2009 that will be held in laos thailand helping them build thier stadium becuase they got only one and it can only fit 7,000 people. And saying this lakorn make thier culture look bad? so what thai culture dont allow sex before marriage to but it happens. Thats real life stuff u cant deny it. Laos has it everywhere in thier country. And throwing the dok champa anyway so what my aunt threw it away alot time and even stomp on it. This is just an excuse to ban this lakorn. Look at the chinese series I watch back then about a chinese lady and her son she pregnant with no husband they treated her bad so she came to thailand after her son grew up he went out to find his real father. If this was laos they ban the chinese series to? lol They try so hard to make thier image of thier people good but u got to except the fact that in laos thier not 100% perfect. I see them vientiane girls they arnt all that good some are worst then us over here lol. This is bs laos communist has no brain they live in the woods and cave before they took over the country never been to school never seen the outside world........so thats why they are so hard headed and closed hearted human being. They arnt open minded like other countries. if u are so close mind close heart u never succeed in life and thats why laos isnt getting anywhere in this world they rank one the pooriest in the world and undevelope countries in the world. If these communist continue to rule laos forget it they will continue to cuase problem about people movie. How many time did thais make movie about war with burma. And I havent heard one complain from the burmanese goverment and the burmanese are real enemy of thailand to but no complaint. Chinese make series and movie about japan world war 2 and u dont see or hear japanese complaining or demanding a ban. Thats becuase they are educated they understand its just a movie for entertainment. Look at america they make alot movie mocking blacks white whatever u dont see any complain or protest. Laos is laos close mind close heart will never open thier mind and smell the new world. I seen lao movies to on lao bc and lao champa network on the sattelite. They make movies about a lao lady coming back from the city and came to the lao girls out in the village and lied to them working in the city is good and u get what u always want a good life. And they believe and they got sold into prostition. Laos goverment dont ban that? That movie basicly saying lao ladies are liar and lying to thier fellow girls to go become prostitutes and saying lao girls are stupid to believe. Thats ok movie? and throwing a flower and having no daddy going look for ur daddy is bad? They rule Laos not Thailand they have no right tell Thailand what to do. And why Thailand take this shit from them anyway they complain about alot movie already. They surviving now becuase of thailand opening its border with them. They owe Thailand alot money right now but they still act like thailand owe them one. If you guys havent notice I see on lao tv some thai commercial are dubb in lao lol. Yea thats right dubb for what? its freaken same language! well some but still no need to dubb. No hard feeling but I am southern lao and having to listening to them northern accent bother me. Its just becuase some thier accent so bad that I have hard time understanding them. Talking about ban why thailand not sue them for stealing music and instrument. Well So if I offended any of my fellow lao I am sorry but I had to let me feelings out. Now I feel better. ah............... :) anyone agree with me please do share. Whoever dont agree with me dont reply to my comment I dont wanna read lol.
