lol well yeah there are those type of exceptions... because once u are hired for them, u have to dress like them to work there! i.e. ppl who works at gap just pays gap back because they are/were required to wear gap clothing only on the job. i dunno if it's still the same there, i dunno.

Wow lots have been said already...but here's my two cents:
I never had a job in high school...I was only focused on getting into college. Once there I worked a ton of jobs, random ones too. I started out in food service in college, became a supervisor but the work was hard so I transferred to another area. I was lucky bc my friend got me a job in the bookstore so yeah connections are good to have. I worked at the college bookstore until I graduated but I also did a lot of volunteer work at the same time, it was hard but bc I still had classes too.
During all that I also got an internship through my department at school (no pay of course) but that really helped after I graduated with my degree. I also got my friends to proof my resume and I practiced interviewing for jobs with anyone who had time. I get really nervous and am bad at selling myself to potential employers...so I have to practice practice practice! It makes a difference for me not sure about other people though.
I've been at my current job for more than a few years now, its hard work but I like it. Pretty soon I will need to figure out what I want to do next...maybe go back and get a different degree...not sure yet but I wish you luck!
BTW when I first started out for my first real job outside of college I sent out like 100 resumes...and I only got a few interviews but one of them turned out to be the job I am at right now, so it helps to keep at it, as the others have said already.

My job now is not where I wanted to work initially. I had three choices: WaMu, restaurant, or my current job. I did not want to work in the restaurant because I don't want to smell like food, I just want to eat it lol. I wanted to do the high-school intern program at WaMu and they made me go through all this extensive paperwork, even write an essay on why I want to work for their bank. I wasn't nervous because the VP of the branch is my teacher's colleague. But that was my downfall. Don't ever assume going into an interview that the people know you even if they do. The VP introduced me to the senior financial analyst, the old HIP intern, and all the other employees. They called me and asked what hours I would be available and stupid me said uhh only after 3 pm because of extracurricular activities. Yep, I never heard back from them after that because my schedule wasn't flexible. I was so angry and thought wth I missed one of my important club meetings for school to meet up with the VP and he didn't hire me!
However, at the same time, the student receptionist position for my high school district office was open since the last girl that worked there graduated, and once they graduate from the district, they no longer can work in that position since its meant only for a student still attending one of the schools in the district to gain experience in the business world, so I sent in my resume. The classified HR lady, who is now my supervisor and one of the most nicest person I have ever met, called to set up an interview. I wanted to reject it, but I also wanted the money lol. I'm glad I followed through with the interview though, because I got the job and love it. The only drawback is having to wear heels, they hurt, but at least they make me taller haha. I never feel as though I dread going to work. Another plus is we get free delicious food during meetings, newspapers/catalogs/magazines to read everyday, and even catered lunches from restaurants in town. If I worked at WaMu, I'd never get that. I also gained valuable experience and was even offered work for the summer before heading off to college. Plus, the main receptionist is soooooo awesome, she's kind of like a second mom lol. I absolutely love working with her. Ahhh I love my job, mainly I love the people and environment.

As for me I work at a casino...i dont have to do much there just sit and wait around until customer comes to my window and cash out...before that i used to sit in the back of the main cashiering cage and just watch other cashier do their work..but i didnt make that much in there all i made was 11.33 an hour so i decide to go back to being a regular cashier which make less then what i did before but i get tips everynight...i think its better for me that way..education wise their looking for a high school diploma or an accounting cerfictcate. i hope i spell that right..as of right now i am also in the process of trying to work for the government..

man i sorry but old people are so mean.. but some are nice.. but yeah um how i got my job..um my brother use to work there and i got hired there.. its really nice to work there..i love working there.. but then there bitches there....but they got hired...

i had not yet work at any fast food service and not planning to neither..(knocks on wood)
(except helping out my cousin's restuarant --she didnt have to ask, i even offer to help it was a nice experience- who wouldnt... free food & unlimited Thai Tea ~Yummmm) oh, maybe i shouldnt have said that! lol
I started my current job my senior yr back in high school.. yes it was thru connection. my older brother worked in the i guess you can say IT dept. if not its pretty close. anyways, it started as a temp job, 4 hrs a day- one day out of the week. it was for minimum wage, it was easy money and the job was a piece of cake. (any job can get boring easily)
i did this for a couple of months or so..and i was finally offered a part time job (i guess they find that i was good at doing the easiest job ever) so they started to give me more work...soon enough i became a floater at work..helping whoever that needed help, (this really pays off in the end, btw) of course i finish my job first before searching for other work.
anyhow, i did this for a yr or so, not long while at that job (again this is thru connection )my sister in law needed some help at her work place so i applied as a medical filer (requires little or no experiences at all) and dangit there are papers stack so high, i dreaded at the sight (never have i saw that many papers in my life in the same room!! )
anyways i work there for a couple of weeks...and they wanted to hire me full time as receptionist/taking medical orders...the pay was good! but i didnt like talking to rude & angry ppl on the other end of the line...when ppl are needy they can get very nasty! argh...
anyways i told my current place that the medical office wanted to hire me full time i might have to quit my current job...so my current job offered me a full time job that pays me a lil over the job...i went back and forth for a bit and since i didnt like talking to customers...i end up choosing the job i am currently at.
its been 7 yrs since now... <_<
customer service rep/other stuff ...<--ironically, its the same position that i had tried to shun away from! :huh:
get this~ the other job was over the phone customers only...
but this one is over the phone plus the meet & greet! but i had to break that shell like everyone else..and starting to get use to it..its not so bad after all!
it may not be your dream job...but take it and considering that it pays the bills!

Welps! I gave up the other day on finding a more "professional" job, and decided I should just go back to restaurants or retail since they care more about your schooling...then suddenly today I got a job interview offer from that company that wouldn't reply back to me after I told them I go to school. So I hope it works out.......................(i have to skip a class for the interview T__T)

I had an internship at dental office and it was so bored especially the customers were elders. <<" I mean it's really easy to work with them, but the time slowed down that would make you feel like wanting to go home quickly. .___. After internship was over, the boss wanted to hire me but I turned it down dues to bad rumors from co-workers and two-hours drive. 0.0 Afterward I found another dental office near my area and worked there for a month 'cause I can't stand their flithy laboratories and horrible co-workers, too. Yeah, I didn't get much money either. --;
Then recently, my former Elementary teacher has became a Elem. principal and she asked me if I can work as the classroom teacher or teacher aide, but I suck with teaching so thus I chose teacher aide since it's part-time job. However, I can't work there 'cause I was required to go to community college to take an AA degree since I'm not in any colleges after I graduated from high school. I'm currently a jobless and yeah, laziness preavils! ^^;
Beside I better get a job as soon as possible 'cause in few years, I'll be a roommate of 3 people and I don't want to be a burden, you know. .__.; I'm thinking taking over my friend's position from barbershop 'cause she'll be in university soon and I know her co-workers. To have many connections, is the best solution. LOL.

Good news guys, I landed a job. Whew. But I got a call for an interview from another. :\ I don't know how much that one pays, but it helps w/ my career more. I'm broke, so I need moonee...lol

lol, um i had to make a choice too! when i was jobless i got not interviews and once one comes... so does the other 5 that i've put in my resume for! the murphy's rule of life! so screwy!!! but i stuck with the comfort levels and how close is it to home, gas factor and all that haha... i work 15 mins max away from home... unless there's a bad snow storm then it's like 1.5 hours <_<

But for the job I just got, training starts on Monday. What if I get the job from the one who just called me??
Can I quit the training program? Will it affect me badly?? Such as my records and stuff? I googled some answers, and it was said that the company can sue me...??

It may sound professional experience, but it's not to me, though. I was an amatuer on the job and by time, I realized that dental profession wasn't for me at all. Yeah, I totally wasted my certificate AND tutition. --; After that, I had to deal with my educational advisiors 'cause I sorta betrayed their hopes where they saw a potential in me. (_ _)
I don't mind getting a job, but I always get money coming in every month so that's probably why I don't feel obligated to do a job hunt ever since I quitted. ^^; And good luck with your job! ^^b

well if they'd make some money from suing you...and if suing cost 2 dollars i think they would... but suing costs them loads of money and time... they'd rather just find someone else. so don't worry they won't sue u lol... unless ur training session is way worth the suing. for instance...training that costs them $5000+ and it will be very hard for them to replace u.

HELP!!! Should I take a hostess job at Ooka (Japanese restaurant)? I mean I have a zero experience in hosting and I'm deaf, but I can talk. So how hostess works? It seems that they need a part-time job employee for an upcoming spring break only for 11am-3pm. Will Ooka hire someone like me who has been a jobless for 2+ years? --; My friend thinks that I should, but I always get nervous when it comes to customers. =\

well hostess, from what i know of my friends working at the habatchi place around here... u have to sit customers down, the only part that might require hearing is listening to how many people needs to be seated. sometimes it's the amount u see, but sometimes it's more than that, but i don't think that will be a big problem. hostesses doesn't take orders from customers. they just sit people and clean the table out if the servers need assistance. but i'm not 100% sure if that's how it is everywhere.

You won't hear it when kids cry and people are yelling at you. I think some folks might get angry when they try to call you and you don't respond because you can't hear their shouting and cursing :\ lol But you should go and have a talk with the manager or whatever, and see if you fit the job. Anyways, it's been only 2 days since I've worked, but I love it so far.
The people are awesome! All the coworkers, the managers and trainers are really cheerful, friendly, funny, and so on. And we get paid once a week... stores here i come!!!!!!!!! >_<
