OPEN LETTER TO SLB FROM PESHWA'S DESCENDANT
'Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming movie Bajirao Mastani has been in the news since its trailer has been out. And recently when the new song of the film, ‘Pinga’ was released, the reactions have been mixed from all the sections. Some praised the song and Priyanka Chopra-Deepika Padukone performance, some criticised it. According to a leading daily, now Mohini Karkarey, who is a descendant of the Peshwas, has written an open letter to Bhansali where she has hit out at him. In the letter she has claimed that Kashibai could not have danced because she was suffering from arthritis. Karkarey has also claimed that Mastani was not a courtesan, but the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand.
Here is the text of the full letter:
Mr Bhansali,
The time has now come to speak out, to speak out against the picturization in the song and certain scenes from your movie, Bajirao Mastani. The latest song Pinga and the dance sequence which you have promoted have a lot of undesirable elements. This is not fiction, Mr Bhansali. You have portrayed real people who have been recorded in history. The Peshwas ruled for more than 100 years. Did you do any research at all? Did you, for instance, understand the life and times of people in the 1700s? Do you know and understand their behavioural pattern?
Here are a few recorded facts for your perusal:
Fact 1: Kashibai Saheb was suffering from tuberculosis and had arthritis. Due to this she had a limp.
Fact 2: Kashibai would never get into a dance routine even if she was healthy because that was not in the culture.
Fact 3: The costumes shown in the song Pinga were never worn by royal families or even normal women. The way the nauvari was draped did not show even an ounce of skin.
Fact 4: Kashibai and Mastani met only once in their lifetime and that too formally.
Fact 5:  Kashibai was the daughter of Mahadji Krishna Joshi from Chaas and was known as Chaskar Joshi. Her descendants are still alive.
Fact 6: Mastani was not a courtesan or dancer. She was the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand. She was married to Bajirao and was his second wife. Mastani's descendants, the Nawabs of Banda, will give you enough proof of this.
Proof of all the facts is available on Peshwe Gharanyacha Itihas by Mr Pramod Oak and you will find plenty more proof here in Peshwe Daptar.
Bajirao was a great warrior second only to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. With this so called love story, you have made a mockery of him. You have insulted the very essence of Maharashtrian families. This will definitely create a flawed image about such a great personality and his family.
Yours sincerely,
Mohini Karkarey
With Mohini lashing out at SLB, it has given a new perspective to the controversy; to what extent our filmmakers tweak the biopics? Do the changes made in the name of creative inputs are valid? How far can you temper with the facts and the story presentation?
In the past, when director Ashutosh Gowariker had made 'Jodha-Akbar', on the life of famous Mughal ruler, King Akbar, the movie received a lot of flak from many sections in the society. Despite many voices being raised, it was a commercial success. But one cannot ignore the fact, how much creative freedom can a filmmaker take with a treatment of biopic story for the big screen, is yet to be figured out!'

I agree with her cos Pinga was not a royal dance but a Maharashtrian. And this also might be for publicity stunt from both SLB and that woman. What was she doing all these years?? SLB had this script ready from 13 years, he does research for everything, how can he miss this??
Comment from a newspaper - There is not enough written about both Mastani and Kashibai. Mastani is according to some historic scripts a dancer. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is following this story. Her mother was Ruhani Bai, A Persian woman. According to the other story she was the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand and he gave Mastani as a present (Yes in those days they made deals with their daughters) as a present to Bajirao for defeating an army that was attacking him. He also gave part of his wealth to Bajirao. So it's entirely Sanjay's vision as to what story he has gone with.

OMG I'm speechless. Ranveer, Deepika, Priyanka were amazing. For DP and RS, its a new experience. Both were too good. For PC, its an easy job for her cos she is a good actress, she has more experience. All 3 did a great job.

Mastani was carrying a baby, thats her son, Shamsher Bahadur. Bajirao named him again as Krishna Rao, Bajirao wanted him to be a Brahmin so he can be ruler after him but other Brahmin's did not agree with him, so his son was known as Shamsher only. Bajirao was an upper caste Brahmin, Mastani was half Persian Muslim.

Idk why the controversy about the story. SLB met Bajirao's descendent in the beginning, 13 years ago when he had the script. Now waiting for his answers.

Pune court admits petition seeking ban on ‘Bajirao Mastani’

A city-based resident has filed a case against Bajirao Mastani’s creators on grounds of gross distortion of history.
Firoze Mohammad Shaikh has filed a case against Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film’s director-producer as well cast members including, actresses Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone who essay the roles of Kashibai, the Peshwa’s first wife and that of Mastani, respectively.
The petition takes particularly strong objection to the recently released song ‘Pingaa’, which it alleges incorrectly portrays the characters of Kashibai and Mastani. It further demands a complete ban on the release of the film, scheduled for December 18, in Pune and across Maharashtra.
It claims that the song was offensive to Marathi culture and degrading to a Marathi lady.
The case was admitted in a local court which claimed that the filmmakers had tweaked ‘facts’ under the pretext of artistic licence.
“The film is an insult to the glorious history of Bajirao Peshwa and a total misrepresentation of his person,” claimed the petition.
According to criminal lawyer Wajed Khan-Bidkar, who filed the complaint on behalf of Mr. Shaikh, the complaint was not to garner publicity, but to prevent such filmmakers from making imaginary, fictitious films, by which the emotions of lakhs of people may be hurt.
“We will be submitting historical evidence as well as several letters from the successors of the Peshwas to prove misrepresentation in the name of creativity,” said Mr. Bidkar.
Already, a controversy has erupted against the film and the song with a descendant of the Peshwa accusing Mr. Bhansali of ‘gross misrepresentation’. A Facebook page, urging a ban on the film has also been created and has received several ‘likes’.
