Chapter 11

The caravan had finally arrived at their destination, the Kingdom of Wasuthep. Like the Kingdom of Morakot, the Kingdom of Wasuthep was lively and bustling with many people. Businesses were up and going and life seemed to be steady for the Wasuthep people. Little did these people know that there would be a war in the meantime. Prin and Nadech couldn't imagine how all of these innocent people would be affected.
"Oy! Oy, my stomach hurts!" Rath exclaimed suddenly.
Prin and Nadech turned to look at him. He seemed perfectly normal.
"Bpen rai wa?" Nadech asked him.
"My stomach hurts," replied Rath. "I've got to find a bathroom."
Prin and Nadech laughed. Nadech jumped off his horse and helped Rath down.
"I'm not sure where...
Before Prin could even finish his sentence, Rath took off like a canon.
"What the hell's up to him?" asked Nadech, scratching his head. "Should we wait?"
"No," replied Prin. "We're blocking the streets. Let's go ahead and proceed into the palace. I'll have someone to come fetch Aie Rath later."
Nadech nodded and the army marched into the royal palace of Wasuthep.

Rath looked behind him carefully to make sure that no one followed him. He came to a corner of the gated palace and approached two guards. When Rath tried to enter, the guards held out their spears in an "X" to stop him.
"What do you think you're doing kid?" asked a guard.
"Can't you tell who I am, you moron?" asked Rath. "I am Princess Urassaya!"
Both guards studied Rath carefully and kneeled before her.
"Your Highness," said the guards. "We apolo...
Princess Urassaya shook her head and dashed into the palace. She had to make it back to her chamber and change into her princess attire before Prin and Nadech's crew entered the court. It was very important that she was presence during the two kingdoms' reconciliation.
When Princess Urassaya reached her chamber, two maids were standing exiting it.
"Nang Cheun, Nang Pitt," Urassaya called out to them.
Nang Cheun and Nang Pitt immediately recognized the boy in front of them. They fell to their knees and bowed their heads down.
"Get up!" exclaimed Urassaya.
They both got up at once.
"Is Morakot's army here yet?" she asked them.
Nang Cheun and Nang Pitt exchanged quizzical looks and shook their heads.
"Why do you ask such a question, Your Highness?" asked Nang Pitt.
"Nothing, nevermind," said Yaya. "Quick, help me to change into my clothes!"
Though they were both a bit confused and excited at the sudden return of their princess, they followed her into the chamber and did as they were told. Nang Cheun went to fetch Princess Urassaya's clothes while Nang Pitt helped the princess strip out of the boy clothes.

"This is it," said Nadech, turning to Prin.
They both got off their horses and motioned for their small accompanying army to do the same. Phra Jao Mata and Prince Natthawut of Wasuthep walked down the steps of the court and approached the Morakot army, who all immediately paid their respects to the two royal figures.
"Rise," said Jao Mata.
Prin and Nadech rose but the rest of the army remained on their knees.
"I, Prin of Morakot, has been sent by His Highness Phra Jao Sompohb of Morakot to present this gift to settle the border dispute between the two kingdoms," said Prin. "Hopefully, Morakot and Wasuthep are still friends."
King Mata laughed and Prince Natthawut slightly smiled.
"I see you both are no ordinary Morakot citizens," the King said to Prin and Nadech.
They all stared at Prin and Nadech from head to toe. Even though they had been in Morakot for a while, Prin and Nadech still wore 21st century clothes and sported the 21st century hairstyle.
"We are actually not from Morakot," replied Prin.
"We are rather foreign outcasts that Phra Jao Sompohb saved," said Nadech. "We are only here to fulfill our duties that have commanded by His Highess, the King."
"And you both are doing a rather splendid job," said Phra Jao Mata. "I shall not keep you friends standing here. Let us proceed into the palace."
Prin and Nadech looked at each other and nodded. They both followed the King and Prince into the royal court and awaited for the rest of the officials to assemble. Prin and Nadech took their places and watched on as the court began to fill up. Stepping onto the King's left side of the throne was a beautiful young woman probably nearing her 20s. She looked elegant and sweet. It didn't take Nadech long to realize that the princess very much resembled their good friend, Aie Rath. Nadech nudged Prin in the ribs to get his attention.
"What," said Prin.
"The princess," began Nadech. "She looks so familiar, don't you think?"
Prin glanced at Princess Urassaya.
"She does," said Prin. "Maybe because we've seen her picture in the history books."
"No," said Nadech. "I think she looks a lot like...like Aie Rath!"
"Aie Rath?" asked Prin, trying to see the resemblance. "No, I think you're thinking too much. Aie Rath is a young boy and Princess Urassaya is a young woman of high honor. She's a princess."
"But...
The fanfare music had interrupted Nadech. Phra Jao Sompohb entered the court again and took his seat at the throne. Even though all of the attention was on Nadech now, he couldn't get his eyes off Princess Urassaya.
"Why is he staring at me?" Princess Urassaya thought to herself.
She found it funny that Nadech just sat there and stared at her the whole time. He seemed very dreamy looking. Actually, he appeared handsome from her view. Out of nowhere, she slightly snorted. Her brother, Prince Natthawut must've noticed because he turned to look at her.

"I think that there's something fishy about that princess," Nadech told Prin after they were dismissed from the court session. "She was staring at me the whole time."
"Seems like you were staring at her the whole time too," said Prin.
"I did not," said Nadech.
"Well how did you know she was staring at you the whole time?" asked Prin, smartly. "If you didn't look at her, how did you know she looked at you?"
Nadech was silent. He felt like a total doofus. Of course, it was common sense.
"Oy!" he exclaimed.
"What's wrong now?" asked Prin.
"I want to go home," said Nadech. "I can't live here any longer. It's so awkward!"
"I want to go home as much as you do," said Prin. "But, we've got to carry out and fulfill Phra Jao Sompohb's orders."
"When is it going to be over?" asked Nadech. "I don't want to live in history forever."
"History is always changing," said Prin. "It's never going to be over."
Prin stared into the distance at the sun on horizon. They had to stay in the Kingdom of Wasuthep overnight and set out back to Morakot the next day. Even though Wasuthep accepted Morakot's gift of alliance, Prin and Nadech knew that that was not the original intention Wasuthep kept to. There was much more to it than that. Accepting the gift was only to diverge Morakot's suspicions that Wasuthep was breaking the alliance.

Chapter 12

After touring the Wasuthep's palace alone for a while, Nadech found a pre-assembled hammock tied to two large oaks trees and climbed in. He checked his watch to see that it was currently 8:45 PM. He didn't know if the time was the same as it would be in the future. Nadech sighed heavily and looked up at the stars above. Never before had he seen so many stars in the sky. Even though he never left Thailand, Nadech felt like he was a gazillion miles away from home. It all sort of felt like a dream.
He lied there peacefully for a moment until a small piece of rock whizzed past him. Then, there was another that hit him in the face.
"Hey!" Nadech called out. "Krai wa?!"
He sat up in the hammock and looked around wildly but didn't see anyone.
"If you're a man, come out and face me!" he called out amidst the darkness.
The only source of lights came from the stars above and the fire lit torches scattered around the palace.
Suddenly, Nadech flipped over off the hammock and landed on his belly. His face gently clashed with the ground. Furious, he got up and spat out the bits of grass and put two hands on his hips.
"Krai wa?!" he called out again. "Big boys don't play like this! Come out and face me!"
Then, breaking the silence, was a high-pitched laughter. A short figure emerged from behind the tree and laughed before him.
"You," said Nadech, scanning the figure carefully.
It took him a few seconds to realize that it was Princess Urassaya.
"Princess?" said Nadech, unsurely.
Princess Urassaya smiled widely and swayed from left and right like a little kid.
"You sure about that?" she asked him.
"Am I supposed to bow or kneel or what?" Nadech asked her.
He took another good look at her.
"You look really familiar," he said.
He circled her once and pointed a finger at her face.
"You!" he exclaimed. "Do you have a brother?!"
Princess Urassaya's smile was replaced with a blank expression.
"In case you haven't known, my brother is Prince Natthawut," replied Princess Urassaya.
Nadech scratched the back of his head. That wasn't what he was trying to imply.
"You are really dumb," said Princess Urassaya.
"Excuse me?" said Nadech.
"You really don't recognize me, huh?" asked Princess Urassaya. "Or is it because I'm too pretty?"
Nadech thought for a moment and then it hit him!
"Aie Rath!" exclaimed Nadech. "You're Aie Rath! You really look like my friend, Aie Rath!"
"I'm that cute boy!" said Princess Urassaya, happily.
"Mai jing ah," said Nadech, backing away a few feet. "You're...you're a...
Nadech fainted out of shock before he could even finish his statement.
"Hey!" exclaimed Princess Urassaya, getting down on the ground beside him. "Am I really that scary?!"
She shook him a few times and within a blink of an eye, she was under him and he, on top of her. Their eyes met. The bright smile on his face faded away. They could almost feel each other's heartbeats. Suddenly, Princess Urassaya pushed him off and in the process, kicked him in the crotch.
"AHHH!!!" Nadech wailed in pain.
He was on his back clutching his crotch and moaning loudly in pain.
"I'm sorry!" exclaimed Princess Urassaya. "Are you okay?!"
"So...so...are you...a...a man or woman?" Nadech asked, trying to get his words out clearly. "Your strength...s...sure is manly like."
Princess Urassaya felt herself turn red in the face but thanks to the night sky, it wasn't visible to Nadech. She hesitated for a moment because she didn't know what to say. Then, after another quick apology, she ran off. Nadech managed to get up on two feet, one hand still pressed over his crotch as he looked on in pain.
"Yae tua saeb," he said to himself.

Prin eyed Nadech suspiciously while Nadech struggled to get on the horse. Their army and crew laughed and snorted a bit but Nadech ignored them.
"Bpen rai wa?" Prin asked Nadech.
"Nothing," replied Nadech. "I...I...er...just got into a little accident."
"Accident," said Prin. "What kind of accident injures you down there?"
"Aow na," said Nadech. "If I say there's nothing, there's nothing."
"Where were you last night after the dinner?" Prin asked him.
"I went out to take a walk," replied Nadech.
"And you tripped and fell onto your...
"It was Aie Rath," Nadech admitted finally. "Aie Rath."
"You found him?" Prin asked. "After he parted ways with us in the market, I sent people out to find him but no one knew where he was."
"Yeah," said Nadech. "I don't know how to explain it to you. I'll just tell you along the way then."
Prin nodded and moved forward on his horse.

"Aie Rath is the...is Princess Urassaya?!" Prin asked shockingly in a lowered voice so that everyone else couldn't hear. "Are you sure about that?"
"Chai," replied Nadech. "I knew that face was familiar when I first saw it. And I tell ya, she is the most unbelievable princess ever! I don't know if I'm supposed to pay my respects to her or not."
"Of course you are," said Prin. "She's the princess!"
"I'm not so sure after seeing her in boys' clothes," said Nadech. "I mean, what kind of princess does that? We've been with her that long and didn't know she was a woman all along."
"But you know what," began Prin. "I'm beginning to feel that this isn't good. What if she was spying on us?"
"I don't know," replied Nadech.
"I think this is suspicious," said Prin. "I don't know if she was sent to the Kingdom of Morakot to spy or not and if she has anything to do with the border issue."
"But when that happened, she was with us," said Nadech.
"Whatever, we must be careful," said Prin.
"Should we tell the King about this?" asked Nadech.
"No, definitely not," replied Prin. "It will definitely arise suspicions. We don't know for sure what Princess Urassaya was up to or what she is up to so let's keep this as a small matter between us two right now. How do you think the King will react when His Highness finds out that Princess Urassaya was with us all along? It puts us into trouble too."
"I understand," said Nadech.
He sighed and Mark turned around to look at the army. They all looked tired as they had been walking for a few hours now.
"I think we should take a break," Prin said to Nadech. "Now that we're out of the Kingdom of Wasuthep, it should be safe."
"Alright," said Nadech. "Everyone seems tired."
Prin held up one arm in the air for everyone to stop and announced that they were going to take a break. He and Nadech jumped off their horses and scanned the area.
"Seems good," said Nadech. "I'm gonna go for a walk. If I stay here in one place, I'm gonna go nuts."
"I'll go with you," said Prin. "We shouldn't be separate. You know what era this is; anything could happen. It isn't the future where there are cops patrolling."
"Okay," said Nadech.
Prin motioned for one of the soldiers to follow them and put Aie Dum and Aie Khao in charge of the rest.
"We'll be back shortly," Prin said to Aie Dum and Aie Khao.
"Khor rup," said the two guards simultaneously.
Prin grew to like and build trust upon these two guards. They had been helpful and obedient towards him ever since he had stepped foot in the Morakot kingdom. Not to mention, they were also very loyal.
Prin and Nadech walked into the forest and came across a beautiful river bank with crystal clear waters.
"Wow," said Nadech. "It's beautiful."
"Would you care for some water, sir?"
Prin and Nadech looked at each other and turned to look at the soldier behind them.
"Princess Urassaya!" Prin and Nadech gasped.
They both fell on their knees and bowed their heads down. The two had no idea that the soldier beside them was Princess Urassaya in disguise all along. It wasn't until she spoke that Prin and Nadech recognized that familiar squeaky voice.
"Rise," said Princess Urassaya. "Never ever kneel before me again."
"What are you doing here, Your Highness?" Prin asked her.
"You know, I liked the way you guys treated me before when I was Aie Rath," said Princess Urassaya. "I'm not used to this royal respect from you two."
"That's because we didn't know you were a princess back then," said Nadech.
"Your Highness, you shouldn't be here," said Prin. "If someone knows that you're with us, we'll definitely be in trouble."
"What are you afraid of?" asked Princess Urassaya. "You have me."
"Easy for you to say," said Nadech. "You can't guarantee our lives just because you're a princess. Life is unpredictable, you know."
"Are you saying that I'm a useless princess?" asked Princess Urassaya.
She took off her hat and threw it at Nadech.
"Now let's see what happens when your army sees me," she said.
"Whoa! Wait!" said Nadech, grabbing her. "If they see you, we'll all be in trouble."
"Your Highness, what is it that you want from us?" asked Prin.
"Nothing," replied Princess Urassaya. "Just your trust."
"Well sorry, we can't give that to you," said Nadech. "Don't forget; you've deceived us before."
"Do you expect me to apologize?" asked Princess Urassaya.
"No," said Prin. "Don't get us wrong. We would never let you do that. You're a princess and we're commoners."
"Chai," added Nadech. "For that reason, you should distance yourself from us."
"Are you trying to get rid of me?" asked Princess Urassaya.
"Oh, finally you're catching on," said Nadech.
She shot an angry look at him.
"Look, we're wasting a lot of time," said Prin. "I'm sure the army is suspecting or worried about us by now. Put your cap back and we'll transport you back to the palace."
"Mai," said Princess Urassaya. "I'm not going back. I want to go with you guys."
"Don't you understand?" asked Nadech. "It's too dangerous."
"I don't care," said Princess Urassaya. "When I'm with you guys, I feel safe."
"It's not like that," said Prin. "We're not suitable enough to protect you anyway. It's just that...
"You're worried about the relations between Morakot and Wasuthep, do you?" asked Princess Urassaya. "Yes, I heard your conversation a while ago. To answer your questions, I am not a spy. You don't have to believe me but that is the truth. I'm just a bird in a cage who wishes to be free."
Prin and Nadech didn't know if they should believe it or not. Princess Urassaya wasn't really mentioned in the history books so there wasn't much they knew about her.
"You're a princess," said Nadech. "Princesses are supposed to be in the palace, not roaming around like this."
"If I could choose, I wouldn't want to be a princess," said Princess Urassaya.
She seemed serious now and was even on the verge of tears. Prin and Nadech were sold. After all, she was just a tiny and adorable princess. What harm was she to them? The guys gave in and allowed Princess Urassaya to go with them.

"Wonder how P'Prin and P'Dech are now."
Jarinporn sighed and put her cup of coffee down.
"Hope they police find them soon," said Phupoom, looking worried.
"I'm really pissed at those cops," said Pakorn. "Either way, I'm not going to let them close the case. They can't just assume they that Aie Prin and Aie Dech are dead. Especially that Nattaporn cop. Next time I see her, I'm going to get her."
"I've heard you say this for the past couple of days already," said Phupoom. "In the end, you've done nothing."
"Oy!" exclaimed Pakorn. "Why do we have to go through this shit?! I thought people who do good deeds have the good deeds return to them. Doesn't seem so at all."
"Don't say that," said Jarinporn. "I have confidence that we will see P'Prin and P'Dech again."
"Jarinporn is right," said Phupoom. "We can't do anything right now but wait and hear out the cops' evaluations and keep track of the investigation."
Jarinporn finished the last of her coffee and set the cup back on the table.
"Well, I'll see you guys later," she told Pakorn and Phupoom. "I think I will go visit P'Nat at home. She needs company. With both P'Prin and P'Dech gone, she has been extremely devastated."
"I'll take you," said Phupoom, offering her a ride.
"Mai tong," said Jarinporn. "Please pay for my coffee."
She smiled and walked away.
"Look at that!" exclaimed Phupoom. "I've been so nice to her but she's always mean to me!"
"What're you afraid of?" asked Pakorn. "You guys are already set up for an arranged marriage. In the end, she'll be yours anyway."
"Just because the elders set us up doesn't mean she will give in," said Phupoom. "Otherwise, we'd be married by now. In addition, I promised Aie Prin that I would take good care of his younger sister. I'm doing the best I can but Jarinporn is still the same. She has no feelings for me."
"I don't know man," said Pakorn. "Women are hard to understand. I don't know what to tell you."
The thought of Nattaporn came to Pakorn's mind. For the past few days, she had been stuck on his mind and he didn't know why. It was probably due to their incident that night. It was unforgettable to Pakorn...in a good way and a bad way. There was something about this cop that made Pakorn uneasy when he thought about her.

"P'Nat, P'Nat ka," Jarinporn called out in front of Natwara's bedroom door. "It's me, Jarinporn na ka."
Natwara opened the door and went back to sit on her bed.
"P'Nat, don't do this," said Jarinporn. "The way you're acting now means that you have no hope."
"I've lost hope a long time ago," said Natwara. "If Prin and Nadech are still alive, police would've found them by now."
"But...
"I can't take it!" exclaimed Natwara. "I can't take it anymore! One is my fiancee and the other my best friend that I grew up with. It's like a part of my life is gone now!"
"But you still have us," said Jarinporn. "You still have me, Pakorn, Phupoom and many other people who care about you. You're a part of our lives too!"
She sat down next to Natwara.
"You have to understand," began Jarinporn. "There are people who care for you and love you. P'Prin and P'Dech wouldn't want to see you like this either because they love and care for you too."
Natwara threw her arms around Jarinporn.
"I don't know what to do Rin!" cried Natwara. "I don't know what to do! I feel useless!"
Jarinporn comforted Natwara until Natwara stopped crying. After an emotional breakdown, all that was left were Natwara's dried up tears on her face and washed up make up. Jarinporn decided to spend the night with Natwara.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phra Jao Sompohb was relieved and delighted to hear that the Kingdom of Wasuthep had accepted their gift. Prin and Nadech explained the situation and that Morakot and Wasuthep were still on good terms. In their minds though, however, Prin and Nadech knew that it was just Wasuthep's show and Morakot were their stage.
"Very well done!" exclaimed Phra Jao Sompohb. "Who knew that I would be blessed with two intelligent and brave young men! The heavens must've sent you two to me!"
"That's too much to say," said Prin.
"Chai krub, er...khor rup," said Nadech with a slight difficulty.
He still wasn't used to the ancient royal vocabulary.
"We're honored to serve Morakot," Nadech added.
The King laughed and applauded.
"Dee maak!" he exclaimed. "I shall reward both of you. Anything you want, your wish granted."
Prin and Nadech got on both knees again.
"We do not wish for anything in return," said Prin.
Nadech secretly wished that Phra Jao Sompohb had magical powers to send them back home. That was what he really wanted. More than anything, he wanted to go home. He couldn't live in the past forever.
"That's not a valid answer!" said Phra Jao Sompohb, raising his voice. "You both deserve a reward. What do you want?"
Whilst Nadech's mind was on home, Prin immediately thought of Princess Minthida. Once again, he was at an inner battle with himself. He had Natwara, he replayed over and over in his mind. Besides, Princess Minthida was too high for him to reach.
"So what do you say?" asked Phra Jao Sompohb. "Gold, emeralds...
"Please," said Prin. "We really do not wish for anything in return."
The King raised his head a bit.
"Well if you're indecisive now, we can talk about this later," he said to Prin and Nadech. "No matter what, I must reward you."
"Khor rup," said Prin and Nadech simultaneously.
After thanking the King, they were both dismissed from the court.
"How was it?" asked Princess Urassaya, who was still in soldier's clothes.
Prin and Nadech totally forgot about her, who was standing outside the court all along.
"Fine," replied Nadech. "Though, I wished Phra Jao Sompohb had magical powers to transport us back home."
"What are you talking about?" asked Princess Urassaya.
Prin caught eye contact with Nadech and shook his head.
"You know that isn't possible," said Prin.
"Chun roo," said Nadech. "I was just saying though."
"You two really confuse me sometimes," said Princess Urassaya.
"Well, we shouldn't be standing here any longer," said Prin. "We've got to get you some clothes to change into, Your Highness."
"Why?" asked Princess Urassaya. "Don't I look cute in these?"
Nadech shook his head.
"Well, let's head to the chamber," said Prin.
He decided to give his bedroom to Princess Urassaya and he and Nadech could sleep share a bedroom. Since their place only had two bedrooms, it was the best idea to keep things at an appropriate level. They couldn't just leave the princess elsewhere because she is their responsibility.
"I'll go get you some clothes," said Prin, after showing Princess Urassaya her bedroom. "However, you must wear men's clothes at all times and during the day, you're to dress as a soldier."
That was the best idea because soldiers were fully clothed whereas servants were half naked. Prin left their chamber to fetch Aie Dum and Aie Khao.
"Bring me a few sets of soldier uniforms," he ordered them.
Aie Dum and Aie Khao exchanged puzzled looks.
"Why?" they asked.
"I have a friend who's staying with us for the while being," Prin lied. "He's from my country and will serve as my soldier so he'll need some soldier uniform."
"Oh," said Aie Dum and Aie Khao. "Khor rup."
"You're not to tell anyone about this," said Prin.
"Khor rup," said Aie Dum and Aie Khao.
They went off to get the soldier uniform. Just as they left, Nadech descended the stairs with a towel.
"Gonna go shower?" asked Prin.
"Yeah," replied Nadech. "I feel disgusting."
Prin nodded and sat down on the last step of his chamber. Shortly afterwards, Aie Dum and Aie Khao returned with the clothes. Prin paid them a few coins and they both left happily.
"Here," said Prin, handing the clothes to Princess Urassaya. "I'm guessing I don't have to tell you how to put it on."
Princess Urassaya smiled and took off her hat. Her beautiful, long, wavy brown hair fell out to reveal her feminine beauty. Prin shook his head.
"I'll leave you alone then," he told Princess Urassaya.
He opened the door and was petrified at the sight of Princess Minthida.
"Your Highness!" exclaimed Prin out of shock.
"Ka," replied Princess Urassaya, responding to Prin not knowing that Princess Minthida was standing outside her bedroom door.
Princess Minthida stepped in and saw Princess Urassaya...preparing to undress. Shocked, Princess Urassaya grabbed her dingy hat and hastily put it back on.
"Who are you?!" exclaimed Princess Minthida looking from Princess Urassaya to Prin.
"Who is she?" Princess Urassaya asked Prin.
Prin didn't know where to begin. Without saying anything at all, Princess Minthida ran out crying.
"Diew!" he called out to Princess Minthida.
He turned to Princess Urassaya.
"Stay put here!" he told her. "Don't go anywhere!"
Prin crashed into Nadech on the way down the stairs.
"Hey!" exclaimed Nadech. "Bpen rai wa?!"
"I'll be right back!" said Prin hastily. "Keep an eye on Princess Urassaya!"
By the time Prin caught up with Princess Minthida, she was already halfway to her chamber. He grabbed her arm but she tried to break free.
"You must listen to me," said Prin.
"Let me go!" exclaimed Princess Minthida. "What I saw was self-explanatory!"
"It's not like that!" said Prin, raising his voice.
"What's going on?"
Phra Jao Sompohb had appeared before them. Shocked, Prin fell onto his knees.
"Rise," said the King.
He smiled at the sight of Prin and Princess Minthida.
"Just what are you two doing under the moonlight?" he asked them.
"I am on my way to my chamber," replied Princess Minthida.
She walked away fast while Prin looked on.
"Diew!" he called out after the princess.
He had totally forgot the presence of the King. To his surprise, Phra Jao Sompohb chuckled.
"I think I know what to reward you now," he said to Prin.
Prin gulped. He knew what that meant.
"I've considered you as family a long time ago," said Phra Jao Sompohb.

Chapter 13

As much as he wanted to clarify and explain the misunderstanding to Princess Minthida, Prin didn't have the nerve to approach her chamber to do so anymore. He was sure that if he did, she wouldn't want to hear him anyway. On top of all the misunderstandings, the King added on to Prin's burden by offering Princess Minthida to him as a reward. Prin's stomach did somersaults when he learned of that but what made him uneasy was that he was unsure. He was unsure of what his heart desired. He didn't want to lie to himself any longer. His developing feelings for Princess Minthida were inexplicable but at the same time, he had Natwara, his fiancee.
"Where'd you go?" Nadech asked Prin, as he ascended the stairs of their chamber. "You seemed like you were in a hurry."
"Princess Minthida saw Princess Urassaya in my room," Prin told Nadech. "I tried to explain but I couldn't catch up with her. Jao Sompohb got in the way."
"Explain," said Nadech. "Explain what? Don't tell me...
"Chai," said Prin. "Princess Minthida misunderstood. What's worse is that Jao Sompohb took it the wrong way. He offered Princess Minthida to me as a reward for my accomplishments."
"ARAI NA?!" bellowed Nadech, standing up. "YOU CAN'T MARRY PRINCESS MINTHIDA!"
"Shh!" exclaimed Prin, in a loud whisper. "You want everybody to hear?!"
"Sorry," said Nadech quickly. "But you can't marry Princess Minthida. You have Natwara!"
"I know," said Prin. "I don't know what to do wa."
"Yah bauk na waa...
"I think I love Princess Minthida," Prin confessed finally. "I can't lie to you anymore. I can't lie to myself either because it hurts too much. I worry about her and I care for her but I keep it all to myself because I am trying to hide my feelings. I try so hard not to think about her because I have Nat...
Anger built up inside of Nadech. Without thinking, he punched Prin in the right jaw. Prin fell to the ground and looked up at Nadech.
"GO AHEAD!" Prin bellowed. "I KNOW I DESERVE IT!"
"YOU'RE BREAKING NAT'S HEART!" Nadech yelled. "YOU SHOULDN'T DO THAT!"
"IT'S ALL MY FAULT!" Prin shouted as he got up on his feet. "I CAN'T HELP MYSELF!"
"I feel hopeless for Nat," said Nadech, shaking his head in disbelief. "You don't deserve her."
Finally, it hit Prin.
"You love her, don't you?" he asked Nadech. "You love Nat."
"Chai!" Nadech admitted. "I've loved her all along! For the sake of her happiness, I've watched her with you. You're a lucky guy to have a woman like Nat by your side! You have no idea how upset and depressed she was when you went missing! However, you were here getting lovey dovey with Princess Minthida!"
"I understand now," said Prin.
He gulped and nodded.
"I understand everything," said Prin. "I'm sorry for everything that has happened."
"You think the word sorry can just mend things just like that?" asked Nadech. "You think the word sorry can fix Nat's broken heart?"
Prin was silent. In the midst of their argument came Princess Urassaya, who was now dressed in men's pajamas.
"What the hell is this?!" she exclaimed at Prin and Nadech.
She looked back and forth and them in disappointment.
"If this is my fault, bring it upon me!" she exclaimed. "I don't know who that woman is but...
"This has nothing to do with you, Your Highness," said Nadech, interrupting her. "This is between me and Prin."
"What?" said Princess Urassaya. "I don't understand. I thought you two were friends."
Prin and Nadech were both silent. They didn't know what to say.
"I'm sorry," said Prin, walking past Nadech.
He went up the stairs into the house. Princess Urassaya turned to Nadech.
"What happened?" she asked Nadech.
Nadech grunted angrily and walked away from the house. Princess Urassaya followed.
"Wait," she called out to him, softly.
Nadech was losing patience with this runaway princess. He turned around and shot an angry look at her.
"Are you mad at me?" Princess Urassaya asked him.
"Why are you following me?" Nadech asked her.
"Because I am worried about you," replied Princess Urassaya. "I am worried about both of you. I don't know if I've done anything wrong or not and I don't know what you two were arguing about but I just want you both to know that I will return to the Kingdom of Wasuthep tomorrow morning. I feel like I've been a burden to both of you. I followed you guys here because I didn't want to stay in the palace. I wanted to be with you guys because I feel safe and have a lot of fun when I'm around you and Nai Prin. But, I am beginning to think that I've made the wrong decision. For everyone's satisfaction and convenience, I will return to my homeland first thing tomorrow."
"This isn't your fault," said Nadech.
"Even if you say it isn't, I feel that I've been a huge burden for both of you," said Princess Urassaya.
She turned around and walked away leaving Nadech confused and a bit sad. Her words hit him deep and he watched on regretfully as she walked back to the chamber. He didn't know why he felt the way he did but it slightly suppressed his anger.

"Prin! Prin! PRIN!"
Natwara woke up with sweat covering her face and her heart racing. She looked over to the side to see Jarinporn sleeping peacefully. It was already morning. Natwara didn't remember when she fell asleep but it seemed as though the whole time her eyes were closed, she saw Prin. She dreamt that he broke up with her and got with another woman. As much as she wanted to cry, Natwara decided to strengthen up and continue to believe in Prin. She believes that he will come back to her. Natwara got up and went to the bathroom to wash her face with cold water.
"Good morning," said Jarinporn.
"Morning ja," said Natwara.
Jarinporn looked at Natwara closely.
"Are you okay?" she asked Natwara.
"I'm fine," replied Natwara. "You're right. I must be strong and believe that Prin will come back to me. My weakness and depression will only cause me to have bad dreams."
Jarinporn smiled.
"It's great that you're thinking that way," she said, cheerfully. "I'm glad and happy for you. Yung ngai, I believe P'Prin and P'Nadech will come back to all of us."
"I hope they come back soon," said Natwara, looking into the mirror.

"Officer Nattaporn?"
"Chai, Officer Nattaporn."
"She's not in today. She's off."
Pakorn thanked the cop for the information and left the police station.
"What kind of cop is this?" Pakorn asked himself aloud. "With an ongoing investigation case, how can she take off like this?"
It seemed as though the cops were useless. Their work was extremely dragging and time-consuming leading Pakorn to think that they didn't want to help with the case anymore. On the other hand, he was still angry at that Nattaporn cop. Pakorn walked across the parking lot to his car and when he got to it, slammed his right fist onto the roof of the car. This was crazy, he thought! It had been three months and the investigation regarding his friends' disappearance was not progressing at all.
"Baa jing jing!" Pakorn exclaimed.
"Even if you're angry, you shouldn't take it out on your car."
Pakorn turned around and saw just the person he was wanting to see, Officer Nattaporn. She wasn't in uniform but had on dark washed jeans, a white-shirt and khaki jacket. Her hair was in a neat ponytail and there was a smile on her face.
"Bpen ngai la, Mr. Smart ass?" she asked him.
"Great," said Pakorn. "You're just the person I wanted to see."
"Oh do you miss me?" Nattaporn asked him.
Pakorn grinned and grabbed her arm.
"Since you're off duty today, I don't have to respect you," Pakorn snarled. "What makes you think you can play me?"
"Well you were driving drunk," she replied. "I had to arrest you because at that time, I was on duty!"
"Smart mouth!" exclaimed Pakorn.
"It's better than being foul-mouthed!" Nattaporn shouted. "Let me go!"
She broke free from his grasp.
"We've done all we can to help you yet you have no respect for us," said Nattaporn. "With a mysterious case lacking evidence like this, even the gods can't help you! You can't just go around cursing out the cops for slacking off!"
"Who said there isn't any evidence?" asked Pakorn.
"Well where's the evidence then?" asked Nattaporn. "Did you friends leave anything thing behind? Was there a trace at all? Were there any clues? Did you see any blood spots in that forest?"
Pakorn didn't know how to answer because as far as he knows there was nothing.
"That's...that's your job to find out," he replied, coolly.
"And that's what we've been doing," said Nattaporn. "What have you done?"
Nattaporn smirked.
"By that look on your face, I can tell that you've been completely useless," said Nattaporn.
"Nee khun!" exclaimed Pakorn. "Don't think you're a cop and you can criticize anyone like that!"
"I don't have time to have this fight with you again," said Nattaporn, walking off.
"Where are you going?" asked Pakorn, grabbing her arm. "I'm not done with you."
Then he remembered that she was off.
"Nee khun, I thought you were off today?" he asked her.
"I came to get some files," said Nattaporn.
"What files?" asked Pakorn.
"If you want to know, follow me," Nattaporn replied with an attitude.
It turns out that she had came to get the files of Prin and Nadech's case.
"What are you going to do with those?" Pakorn asked her.
"I'm gonna go on a little trip to that forest where they went missing to if I can get anything out of it," replied Nattaporn.
Pakorn was surprised. She took off just for that? Unbelievable! She didn't even seem like that type of woman.
"I'm going with you too," he told her.
"Fine," said Nattaporn. "Don't whine or cry if I can't get anything out of it."
"You're the one that should be worried," said Pakorn. "Better be careful or you might go missing too."
Nattaporn forced a laugh and made a face at Pakorn. Then, they climbed in her green Jeep and drove away from the police station.

"Well what do you say Jao Prin?" asked Jao Sompohb, looking over at his daughter, Princess Minthida. "You are very lucky. I have only one daughter."
Prin looked at Princess Minthida then glanced at Nadech. He gulped and looked down on the ground.
"I'm sorry," said Prin, looking back up at the King. "I do not wish to marry Princess Minthida."
This angered Phra Jao Sompohb. He got up and walked towards Prin, who was kneeling on the velvet green carpet.
"What did you say?" the King asked him.
"I do not wish to marry Princess Minthida," Prin said carefully. "I do not deserve such high honor."
The King chuckled.
"That is not to worry," he said. "I have already thought about all of this beforehand. You will know once we get to that point."
Prin didn't know what the King was implying. However, he meant what he meant. He didn't want to marry Princess Minthida. There were far too many reasons for him to explain so he decided it best not to. The fact that she was of nobility and he was a commoner was one of the many reasons.
"I believe that only time will tell," Jao Sompohb smiled. "I will give you another week to think about this. Think carefully."
"Khor rup," said Prin.
Jao Sompohb got up from his throne and left the courtroom leaving only, Prin, Nadech, and Princess Minthida. Princess Minthida took one tearful look at Prin and walked away.
"Go," said Nadech. "Go talk to her."
Prin knew that Nadech meant well. He patted his buddy on the shoulder and ran after Princess Minthida.
"Diew!" Prin called out after her.
He grabbed her arms and pulled her in for a tight hug.
"I'm sorry," said Prin.
She pushed him away.
"Why did you come after me?" she asked him.
"Because I have to explain to you what happened last night," replied Prin. "Please listen to me."
"I don't want to talk to you," said Princess Minthida.
"Now that we've come this far, I don't want to lie to you," said Prin. "Please; all I ask is for you to listen to me."
Princess Minthida looked into his eyes.
"The woman you saw last night is Nadech's younger sister," Prin lied. "She has been forced out of our homeland too and since there was no where for her to stay, Nadech and I decided that she could stay with us. To avoid suspicion of having a woman at our chamber, we had to disguise as a soldier. There is nothing between her and me."
"That's it?" asked Princess Minthida. "And you expect me to believe you? Nevermind that. We have nothing in relations anyway so there is no reason for you to explain these things to me anyway."
"How could you say that?" asked Prin. "Remember what I promised you? What kind of guy would I be if I broke that promise?"
"Well why did you disagree to my father?" asked Princess Minthida.
"I meant what I said in court," replied Prin. "We're two worlds apart. I already told you that I am not from this world. I am not from this era and one day if I were to go back, we will never see each other again. I cannot bear that pain so I must disagree. In addition, you are a princess and I am a normal human being who is walking this Earth. I don't deserve you."
"I don't care," said Princess Minthida, tearfully. "You've already promised me and now you're breaking that promise."
"No, I'm not," said Prin. "I will never break that promise. I will always be there for you but just not in that way."
"I don't understand at all," said Princess Minthida, stepping back. "I feel like you're hiding something from me."
"I have a fiancee," said Prin, finally. "And she is waiting for me to return home. That doesn't mean that I will break my promise to take care of you though. As long as I'm...
"You don't need to say anymore," said Princess Minthida, wiping her tears. "I understand now."
She ran away leaving Prin feeling heartbroken. He collapsed on his knees and buried his face in his palms. He was falling apart.

Chapter 14

"Bpen ngai reu bplao wa?"
Nadech appeared behind Prin and put one hand on his shoulder. He was saddened by the fact that Prin was torn in between two women but at the same time, pitied Natwara.
"This is all my fault," said Prin, standing up.
"It's not totally your fault," said Nadech. "You can't help your feelings just like I can't help my feelings."
Prin turned to face Nadech.
"Do you really love Nat?" he asked Nadech.
"I already answered this question last night," replied Nadech. "Chai, I love Nat and have loved her for years but I wanted her to be happy. That's why, I kept everything to myself and let her be happy with you."
"I'm sorry," said Prin. "I've been a bad fiance to Nat. I've been a bad friend to you."
"But I don't mind," said Nadech. "It just hurts to keep it all to myself but seeing you and Nat happy makes me happy too even though it hurts. And I'm sorry for last night. I was angry and got too carried away when you said you loved Princess Minthida. I felt bad for Nat."
"You shouldn't be sorry about that," said Prin. "Princess Minthida and I are two worlds apart. She's a princess and I'm just a normal human being. I shouldn't have had too much hope."
"Feelings are feelings," said Nadech. "No matter how you feel, you can't help the way you feel. When you love a person, you love them wholeheartedly that you forget about everything sometimes."
"Do you think I'm doing the right thing by turning down Phra Jao Sompohb?" asked Prin.
"Well do you think you're doing the right thing by lying to yourself like that?" asked Nadech. "In the end, both of you will be hurt."
They had carried on the conversation the whole time they were walking back to the chamber. By the time they had reached the steps, Prin finally understood what he wanted. He didn't want to lie to himself but if he really loves Princess Minthida, he must let her go; because one day when he returns home, they won't be able to see each other again causing both of them to be hurt in the long run.
"I must let her go," said Prin, finally.
Nadech turned around to look at him.
"Are you sure about this?" he asked Prin.
"I'm sure," replied Prin. "I should stop everything now to prevent pain in the future."
Nadech patted his shoulder and ascended the stairs into the house. Prin sat down on the steps and thought about his decisions. He thought about everything that he had gone throught past few months. He didn't regret any of it. This experience was the best moment of his life because he has met the woman that he really loves. Even though their love is impossible, he was happy that he met her.
"Aie Prin! Aie Prin!"
Suddenly, Nadech ran down the stairs in terror.
"What's wrong?" asked Prin.
"Princess Urassaya! She's gone!" exclaimed Nadech.
"ARAI NA?!" Prin stood up in shock. "Are you sure?!"
"I'm sure!" replied Nadech loudly. "I remember her telling me last night that she was going to leave but I didn't think she was serious!"
"We must go find her," said Prin. "She followed us all the way here from Wasuthep. It is our responsibility to look after her."
"Okay," said Nadech.
Together, they ran out of the palace in search for Princess Urassaya. At this point, Prin and Nadech wished that history books contained more information on Princess Urassaya because the more they knew about her, the better. However, Princess Urassaya was rarely mentioned as her existence wasn't too significant.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Nee khun! Khun!"
Pakorn stopped walking, put both hands over his knees and tried to catch his breath. Nattaporn, on the other hand, walked on.
"Khun!" he called out to her again.
Nattaporn turned around and laughed.
"Bpen ngai la?" she asked him. "Tired already?"
She had to be kidding to ask a question like that! They had been walking for Pakorn lost track of how long and haven't had a break since.
"Are you not tired at all?" he asked her.
"If you want to take a break, you say so," replied Nattaporn, coolly.
She sat down next to him and whisked out her canteen of water. After taking a swig out of it, she handed it to Pakorn, who took it and drank all the remaining contents.
"Hey!" exclaimed Nattaporn. "That's all the water I have!"
"Oh doesn't matter though because you don't get tired," Pakorn smirked.
"Aie baa!" she said, snatching her canteen back.
Pakorn laughed.
"What's so funny?" she asked. "Now that you're satisfied, get up and let's get going."
"Arai wa," said Pakorn. "It hasn't even been five minutes yet."
"Fine, stay here then," said Nattaporn, getting up. "I'm going."
"What's the rush?" asked Pakorn. "This forest isn't going anywhere."
"This forest isn't going anywhere but I don't have all day," said Nattaporn. "Look, I didn't ask you to come along. You volunteered."
"Honestly though, why did you come here?" asked Pakorn.
"To look for things that your friends could've left behind," replied Nattaporn. "Clues, evidence...
"I thought all your lil cop buddies already did the investigation here," said Pakorn, picking up his backpack and swinging it over his shoulder.
"Chai, they have," said Nattaporn. "But I didn't."
"And what kind of clues and evidences do you think there might just be?" asked Pakorn.
"I don't know," Nattaporn shrugged. "But I refuse to believe that two human beings can magically disappear like that without a trace."
"I think so too," Pakorn agreed.
"If you're done questioning, let's keep walking," said Nattaporn. "I want to get out of here before nightfall."
Pakorn nodded and followed Nattaporn deeper into the forest. No matter what, they must search this forest thoroughly this time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Mai jur," said Nadech.
After breaking up to find Princess Urassaya, Prin and Nadech was sure that she was no where in or around the marketplace. They even went to check at her little house.
"We must take the road that leads to Wasuthep," said Nadech.
"She can't be too far," said Prin. "I just hope we find her before nightfall."
"Let's keep walking," said Nadech.
They walked on a few more miles down the road leading to Wasuthep. The kingdom itself was a day and half's walk so there was no way Princess Urassaya made it there already.
"AHH!!!"
Upon hearing the scream, Prin and Nadech looked at each other and panicked.
"Princess Urassaya!" exclaimed Nadech.
"She must be around here somewhere," said Prin, looking around wildly.
Both guys called out loudly to the princess.
"CHUAY DUAY!" they heard Princess Urassaya scream.
Mixed in with Princess Urassaya's scream were male laughters. Prin and Nadech reached a spot to the side of the road and looked into the tall grasses, where three men were hovering over Princess Urassaya. Nadech charged towards them and pulled the guy in the middle away. He kicked another while Prin took care of the third guy.
"Jao ying!" Nadech gasped, pulling Princess Urassaya into his arms.
"Nadech," said Princess Urassaya, hugging Nadech tightly. "WATCH OUT BEHIND YOU!"
Nadech pulled Princess Urassaya to the side as he kicked the guy on the chest. Then, he pushed her away as he and Prin fought off the rapists. One guy threw Nadech into a nearby tree causing Nadech to fall on the ground hard. His gun fell out. His gun! Nadech quickly grabbed his gun and fired a shot into the sky. The fighting stopped and all eyes were on Nadech.
"Yood!" Nadech called out to the rapists. "If you come closer, I will shoot you with this weapon!"
One guys smirked and walked forward. Nadech fired. The bullet hit the guy above the abdomen and he fell backwards onto the ground.
"Who else wants to try this weapon?" Nadech asked the other two, aiming it back and forth at them.
Instead, they pulled their friend up and scurried away.
"Jao ying!" said Prin, rushing up to Princess Urassaya.
Nadech put his gun away and helped Princess Urassaya up on her feet.
"Are you alright?" he asked her.
"I'm fine," said Princess Urassaya. "If it weren't for you two...
"Don't say anything just now," said Prin, cutting in. "Let's get out of here first."
They went back to Princess Urassaya's house near the marketplace to tidy themselves up first before heading back to the palace.
"I don't get it," said Nadech. "You were in a soldier's disguise. How did they know you were a woman?"
"I took off my hat to wipe my sweat and...
Prin sighed.
"Luckily, we got there in time," he said, sitting down next to the Princess. "Otherwise, we'd feel guilty about this forever."
"Chai," Nadech agreed. "This possibly would've altered history."
"What are you talking about?" asked Princess Urassaya.
"Nevermind," said Nadech. "Even if we explained to you, you wouldn't understand. You probably wouldn't even believe us."
"Next time, don't do anything rash like that," said Prin.
"I'm sorry," said Princess Urassaya. "I felt as if I was a burden to...
"If you're talking about the argument Aie Prin and I had last night, it's not your fault," said Nadech. "We just had a moment."
"How was I supposed to know?" asked Princess Urassaya. "That woman walked in, walked out and Nai Prin chased after her. Next thing, you two were fighting so I felt that it was my fault."
"Nevermind it," said Prin. "It's over now."
"Well who was she?" asked Princess Urassaya.
Prin looked at Nadech, who looked at Princess Urassaya. They felt that it was time to tell her the truth.
